Just another quick video showing how to change the rear brake shoes and brake wheel cylinder on a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado Z 71 Off Road Truck. I disconnected the parking brake cable at the wheel as you see in the video, but you can also disconnect the small section of the Parking Cable below the truck to give yourself more slack to make this connection at the brake lever easier.
There's a few specialty tools made for these Single Spring type of brakes. I was able to pry this spring back in using a screwdriver and long handled needle nose pliers. The links above are for a couple of the specialty tools made by Lisle.
I also got lucky and was able to use a small socket (don't remember what size) that kind of fit on the torx bolt on the wheel cylinder, but the correct tool is an E8 Reverse Torx socket. Also called Female Star sockets. I picked up a set for cheap on Amazon, and I have used it a few times on different jobs already.
amzn.to/3KBq4hX
There's a link to the socket set I used on the front page of my website:

Thanks for all of the information. I just did mine after watching your video. It was still a pain, but your video made it a lot easier. Whoever the Engineer was that designed that U shaped retainer spring should be tarred & feathered and placed over a hot fire. I noticed you skipped over installing it back. I'm sure your words were similar to mine, and wouldn't aline with youtube's user agreement.

Thanks Dan, I had my drums turned and put new pads on today but took it for a test drive the pedal almost goes to floor and I have pumped the heck out of it. When I put drums on I was told adjust them to only when you hear the pad scrape just a little bit. On your video it looked much tighter. I think I need to go your route.

Great video. I did a brake job on a 2006 silverado and I had problems with that one piece hold down spring. I ended up destroying a wheel cylinder. I found a single spring brake tool by lisle, part number 50600 and that did the trick. 36 bucks at o'reilly auto parts was well worth it. hope this help someone. keep up the good work. thanks again

Ah, the magic of fast forwarding a camera..makes it all look so easy! I have an '05 Chevy Silverado 1500 ext. cab long, bed and I did the rear brakes on it last year..what a bear! lol Great video and great tip on the locking pliers holding that spring cable. Seems like I recall resorting to running a piece of nylon string through the spring, tying it to the head of the cable and pulling it through to where it goes to get the job done. I'll be using the locking pliers next time. I'll also look for that spring pulling tool shaped like a screw driver. Good stuff! New sub :-)

Here's a tip for the E-brake cable...on driver's side under the door you can easily disconnect the cables going to each wheel by hand so you're not fighting the spring tension when trying to install it.

I just changed mine and here are some TIPs#1. The emergency brake cable has another connection on the drivers side(in front of the wheel-the 2 rear brake cables connect to 1 cable via a block) You can release the cable at that connecting point and it will allow more FREE CABLE to remove the old brake and install the new. Once the new brake is installed reattach the cable at connecting point. Do this 1 wheel at a time! TIP#2: Once you have the brakes completely back on- you should adjust them from the front using a screw driver and getting a snug fit when you put the drum on OR you can adjust the brakes with the drum on from behind the brake plate(special adjusting tool may be needed).TIP#3 If after the install you have a soft-spongy pedal, then you need to bleed your brakes.Most auto stores have a cheap ONE-MAN-BLEEDER-KIT.

I have a question though...anyone please respond if you are a qualified mechanic: My brakes were also wore down, metal to metal and recessed some of the drum casing (and required a new wheel cylinder as well), If I am not able to purchase a new drum at this time, will my brakes still work once they are put?

Chinotone85, It may be that the W spring is not set all the way back on the inner ledge of the bottom of the backing plate, or that the bottom metal part of the shoe is not seated on the back side of the support from the backing plate. Sometimes the parking brake cable gets in the way of the W spring seating properly if it's not pushed all the way back.

Hey Dan....well done sir, Question would this be the same set up on my 2006 GMC Serria-4dr 2wh dr.....and when adjusting the tention am I turn away from or towards me
@DantheFixitMan
@DantheFixitMan 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Bradley, Thank you. Yes, this should be the same or very similar to a 2006 GMC Sierra. When looking at the star wheel adjustment rod, you can easily verify the direction of the threads to be sure, but I think the top should spin away from you to tighten. Once you have everything back together, it should only spin one direction because the locking tab prevents it from spinning the other way. If you turn it too far and can't get the drum on, you can push the metal tab away from the star wheel enough to spin it back the other direction. Thanks for watching! Best of luck to you. -Dan the Fix it Man

@DantheFixitMan

Hi Zane, Usually a pulsating brake pedal means warped front brake rotors, but at low speeds if it is really pushing back it may be a problem with your ABS system. @@Frank-eg4mw To be safe, I would recommend replacing it. They’re pretty inexpensive. You might get lucky if you want to chance it after putting it back together. It really depends on what you want to risk. If you do decide to just put it all back together I would check it after a week or so to check to see if the seals are still holding, if it is leaking, then replace the wheel cylinder. The only thing I do different is before I slide the drum on I turn the self adjusters from the inside till the drum just has no play but still slides on. Much easier adjusting without going in from the back.

I love how u edited out the part where u had to fight that bastard w spring back on the hub clip ...the socket for that screw on the back is an E7

Thanks for the socket info, I ordered a 10 pc set of the Female Star sockets amazon.com for $10 for the next time I have to do this job. It looks like they are also called reverse torx bits. And yes, the spring was not easy. Take care, -Dan the Fix it Man

What kind of socket is that ??
@DantheFixitMan
@DantheFixitMan 11 ай бұрын
The correct socket to use is an E8 Reverse Torx socket. Also called Female Star sockets. I picked up a set for cheap on Amazon, and I have used it a few times on different jobs already. amzn.to/3KBq4hX Thanks for watching!

@DantheFixitMan 8 жыл бұрын
+Welder Nate the thereaded adjustment rod just sets on the inside notches of the new brake shoes. It can be adjusted after you have sll the springs back on and in place. Thanks for watching!

Dan the Fix it Man Yeah but are you suppose to tighten it hard or just finger tight?
@DantheFixitMan
@DantheFixitMan 8 жыл бұрын
+Welder Nate If you watch the video at 12:00 min I explain that I tighten that from the back through the access slot with the tire back on until you can spin it as hard as you can and it will spin two full revolutions before stopping. Thanks for watching!

Question for anybody. Is the car in neutral and E brake off???? Thank you
@DantheFixitMan
@DantheFixitMan 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Art, Yes, that’s correct. The Parking/emergency brake needs to be off or the drum won’t come off. Having it in Neutral also helps spin the wheels when adjusting the brake shoes. Thanks for watching! -Dan the Fix it Man

@@DantheFixitMan thank you brother. I had to test it on the road 2 hour drive up n 2 hour drive back. (Daughter needed my spare fridge.) Happy New Year. "YOU'RE THE MAN!" Thank you I was a lil afraid the truck was gonna roll as I had a lil jack and two Jack stands. (Jack was to short. Improvise, Adapt and Overcome!

Make it look easy lol. The spring is easier to mess with if you unhook the the e break on the other side of the bed right in the middle.

Hard to decide my feedback, I was thought by professionals at academies and dealerships to never spray pads or shoes with brake cleaner
@scrwblll
@scrwblll 6 жыл бұрын
that applies to the standard semi-metalic pads/shoes, but is not an issue with ceramic pads. Always spray the old stuff before removing since it doesn't matter, spray and clean off the entire area before putting new pads/shoes on, but once installed, never spray the shoes/pads. Also never spray inside the caliper as it can eat away at the rubber around the piston(s).
@donaldgalaz4513

never use the bolt drum removal method with shoes not worn completely (in this case it was) if the drum has a lip you will crack the wheel cylinder piston that aligns the shoe and a new wheel cylinder will have to be installed unless you roll the dice or like to live dangerously like Austin Powers....
