This short explainer shows you how drum brakes work in typical cars and light vehicles. It also demonstrates the use of the hand brake.

This skillful animation raises the bar on the genius mechanism of drum brakes. As I'm sure you know, there is more to it, and potential for another video explaining critical features. 1. Why does the leading shoe have to be smaller in size than the trailing shoe? 2. How does the star wheel automatically compensate for shoe wear? How does automatic adjustment actually work? Why does it work better when braking in reverse? 3. How are the shoes positioned to convert some of that frictional braking force into outward braking force? ie why do the shoe carriers rotate and shift slightly as braking force is applied? 4. Is that rotational shift of the shoes the mechanism for automatic star wheel compensation? 5. How did they position the shoes and lever arm to augment braking with frictional forces without increasing the risk of lockup? Some of these design features may soon be lost, since nobody talks about it any more. Another clever video animation could well represent that effort, for time immemorial.

A very logical and clever engineered solution. Mechanically genius . At the very least it should be remembered that the most effective solution is not necessarily the most complex. Planet gears another great example…

The animation shown is great but I would be very interested in the animation you suggest as well. I was wondering how the self adjusting mechanism worked and didn't know about the other features you mentioned.

@@Spraiser74 would you considered this complex? as a weekend warrior, i'd rather work on the typical pad and rotor instead. seems easier to understand than this complexity. from an engineering perspective, this is a marvelous design but i think it's a bit unnecessary if pad/rotor would do the trick.

Guess it depends on your needs and car, any practical exploration and “diy” is to be encouraged, love the idea that you and others are getting stuck in and hopefully this sparks more interest. Horses and courses, drum brakes can last longer and generate less intense heat. Next time you’re out and about , take a look at the wheels and see how many use pad disc vs drums (if you can spot any). Also check out kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqTTaaaafKypjckfeature=shared

this one is good, better than the other one with more viewers. Since intuitively from the drawing, when you pull the handbrake upwards, the brake shoes retract inwards so @3:04 how is the handbrake cable tensioned to push brake shoes out?

Now I need to figure out the "self-adjusting mechanism"...
@dakloos316
@dakloos316 3 жыл бұрын
As the material of the shoes wears off, you would need to push the pedal further and deeper as time goes by. To prevent you from having to push the pedal deeper because the material wears off and the shoe getting thinner, it would be more convenient if we could put the now thinner shoe closer to the drum right (instead of being obligated to replace the shoe again and again). To exactly this end this mechanism has been invented. When the shoe gets thinner, the vertical spring in this mechanism has less force pulling on the two ends, thus allowing the spring to contract a little bit resulting in the gear thingy going down one notch. The gear going down one notch has the result that the horizontal bar on which the gear thingy is attached extends itself a little, pushing the shoes further apart and thus also putting them closer to the drum. I believe this is how it works. Hope that helps.

Informative yet poorly edited. I know you pay to have end video cards at the end of videos, but it seems counter intuitive when the cards block the last 20-30 seconds of the video. I'm less likely to continue/click on those videos because my assumption is that the last informative segments of those videos are also obstructed by video cards. Food for thought!
@Spraiser74

Thanks for the heads up. Maybe a spacer at the end would work better. Obviously these are excerpts from a fully interactive series of elearning modules so don't have the full effect. Also these videos alone cost thousands to produce, software, writers, vo artists, render farm, hardware, you name it. Not as easy as you may imagine unless you're in the know. Seems too many people just want to be critical for the sake of it. Could never even begin to work out how to undertake such a project, let alone fund it, then upload it for free. As well as offer link to elearning version. I would add that this is not a dig at your observation. I appreciate constructive feedback but can assure you that I will not be dropping £10k of my own hard earned on such a project again. It was a punt. Didn't work out so if people benefit great, if not i suggest they go watch some cats. I'll see if I can sort cards.
