Best explanation I have seen of releasing the hook and setting the plunger with the diagram from the manual. This is about video number 8 I have seen. I think what happens is that rotating the engine backwards, CCW, makes the tensioner side of the chain tight, pressing on the plunger, releasing the hook. Rotating in the normal direction, CW, makes the tensioner side of the chain loose again, allowing the plunger to mostly extend. Then when the engine is running, oil pressure extends the plunger a little more, and takes up wear too.

Thanks for showing this repair! Really easy to do... HOWEVER, my tensioner stopped working after I removed it. When I pushed it down, it initially provided resistance and tried to go back up (as it should). But then it stopped and no longer provided any tension. It seems like it jammed because it wouldn't go further up or down. I bought a new tensioner the next day which I installed and it worked perfectly. I chalk it up as a really old part (my Matrix is 2004) that was likely the original and failed after it was removed. Just something for others to keep in mind...

If you cannot get a new tensioner o ring you can re-use the old tensioner o ring. To reuse the old tensioner, first clean the old tensioner that you have. After the tensioner is dry, the groove where the tensioner o ring sits wrap the groove with some Teflon tape and then reinstall the original o ring seal back onto the tensioner o ring grove. The Teflon tape should give the o ring enough o ring pressure to prevent the old tensioner o ring from leaking again. It's better to buy a new tensioner o ring but if the o ring isn't available you can improvise and re-use the old o ring if you have to.

The tensioner is on the back or up against the back of the engine area. It may be this that is causing oil to drip down below. Unless he added the gasket maker to the flat steel base part with the bolt holes in it.. basically forming an extra seal there..... which some mechanics do so when the O ring gives up again (same number of years later as your engine did with the OEM O ring).. well all the oil will stay inside the engine as it can't leak out past the gasket formed by the gasket maker. Smart eh?

I read this about the product: ("Engine seals harden and shrink from the plasticizers being removed over time. This professional strength synthetic stop leak revitalizes these worn seals and gaskets to restore them to like-new performance.") Well, it seems to work, and for only $20.

I have the 2ZZ engine. Do you have a video on loosening the serpentine belt ?
@chocolate_squiggle4 жыл бұрын
From the 7:00 minute mark, look immediately to the left of the power steering cap - there in the background you can see a hex bolt head peeking through under some hoses . I can't see if that's exactly the right one but in that area is two similar looking bolt heads on the serpentine belt tensioner. One is an actual bolt, and one just looks like a bolt head but is actually a part of the casting. You need to get a socket or spanner (wrench) onto the fake cast nut, with the handle pointing upwards, and gently pull it towards the front of the car. Personally I could fit a socket on but had no room with or without extensions to attach a handle, due to some hard (air-con?) lines. So I had to use a spanner. But it requires a lot of force and so if you have access to an 'extra long' spanner or serpentine belt tool that's great - I used the slightly dubious 'double wrench' method to extend my spanner to get extra torque. A cheater pipe may be safer if you have one. Once you pull the spanner towards the front of the car the belt loosens and you can just slip it off the alternator. Takes seconds when you know how. Take a photo or draw a diagram of your belt routing first. I got cocky my second time and got myself confused lol. Good luck. Sorry just realised mine is 1ZZ-FE engine.

To verify a clogged cat condition, get an OBD II scanner and look at the O2 bank 1 upstream sensor compared to the O2 bank 1 downstream sensor voltage. Upstream should be going from lean to rich or .1 volts to .9 volts regularly. The downstream sensor should hover around .155 volts steadily. If you see both O2 sensors have similar wave forms identical to each other - you have a bad cat. (this is because the cat is not burning the excess fuel) Also, to verify a clogged cat condition, remove the upstream sensor and see if you can rev the engine. If you can, then this 100% verifies there is a clogged exhaust at the cat. make sure you put a heat shroud to deflect the hot gasses from the o2 sensor port do not burn anything.
