Suggest two things, remove both wheels and drums but do not dissamble the opposing side. Do one set at a time in case we get a little confused during reassembly we can refer to the side not yet worked on. Also take a few photos of how things are before disassembly is a good idea - especially how the E-brake is assembled.

Thanks Dan for this video,, it is very helpful. Re; wheel cholks - please folks, when you go after your parts ask for a set,, I did not already have them so purchased a pair for $7.80. VERY cheap insurance the car won't roll while jacking. At approx. one minute Dan mentions the 2 bolts we need to ease the drum removal,, those are M8 x 1.25 x 50mm (length). To those viewing you need these longer bolts to reach through the assy and press against the backing plate.

First step after getting the drum off is to clean the shit out of everything with brake cleaner. Gets rid of all that unhealthy dust and makes it easier to see stuff.

You should clean the brakes while it's taken apart.

Good vid very helpfull for this MATRIX/VIBE setup.You might try pre adjusting shoes b4 installing drum.Then after drum install, with lug nuts holding them in place pull up parking brake and listen 4 clicking sound.This will indicate your auto adjusters where installed correctly and are working.Then rotate drums by hand to check 4 correct adjustment. Reinstall wheels and ur done.NOTE WHEN FULLY ADJUSTED, CLICKING SOUND WILL NO LONGER B HEARD EACH TIME U PULL UP PARKING BRAKE. Check owners manual 4 brake fluid R@R intervals.

The metric equivalent to the 5/16 × 18 thread is an 8mm x 1.25mm. That may be what it is.

Good afternoon Dan. Thanks for this video. My left rear wheel bearing is starting to fail, I needed the size of the bolts to take the drum off, and you have listed them for me. I have a 2008 Scion xD, hope the bolt holes are the same.

They probably are the same, most Toyotas use this size for pulling the drums off. Good luck! Let me know if it works for you. Thanks for watching! -Dan the Fix it Man

Hey mate... that self adjusting mecanism is installed on the wrong side or its just a perpective or subtility of working a Pontiac Vibe instead of a toy Matrix...

You need to use high heat lubricant in the back 6 spots of the plate so that the shoes does not squeak. would be nice a different camera angle due to arm blocking video. but good job.

I replaced my rear brake shoes and all the hardware, then expanded the shoes until there was some friction with the parking brake off. Now the parking brake does very little (I hadn't really checked how well it was working before I replaced the shoes). Do I adjust the brake shoes again after driving the car a little more, or do I assume that the problem is the cable adjustment?
@DantheFixitMan

I would check to make sure the shoes are adjusted properly first, and then go to the cable adjuster next. Best of luck to you! Thx, -Dan the Fix it Man

I was given - by my parents - poor genetics, that being chicken arms and chicken legs. It is quite hard for me to do drum brakes and get those springs attached because I am quite weak. I usually take about 3 times as long as a 'normal' person to complete the back brakes on my car.

Does the 2005 Toyota Matrix XR come with Rear disc/pads or Rear Drum? I'm looking to buy the Matrix XR but if it uses drum than it would be a deal breaker for me. Please let me know ASAP.

Is the brake dust not hazardous?
@stuntdriver2147
@stuntdriver2147 5 жыл бұрын
no - asbestos was used years ago no longer used on these cars if your working on something from the 70's or older than use caution - no compressed air, etc. - spray everything down w/ brake cleaner and ONLY brake cleaner

I just changed the front brake calipers and pads. Bleed the front ok. Can't find the rear brake bleeder screws.!!! nothing above the brake lines. What?
@DantheFixitMan
@DantheFixitMan 9 ай бұрын
I believe it should be off to one side of the brake line right at the back of the wheel cylinder. It's possible that they broke off if you're in a rusty area?
@vtcycle
@vtcycle 9 ай бұрын
you are right, the wheel cyclinder was so rusted that nothing was sticking out where the bleed screw should be! I replaced the wheel cyclinder w;/ blleed screw attached and managed to bleed the system. One thing I did notice is that my brake shoes are different from yours w/ different holes for the springs.
