And finally, thank you for taking the time to shoot this. I could tell immediately you were pressed for time and in the end feel your stress. Hope it worked out okay for you and really appreciate you bringing us many videos over the past few days. A final comment, I really do not like it when mechanics keep my car dirty. Simple little things like wiping down a part or cleaning around the oil filler like you did makes a big difference. Sometimes they pretend by wiping off a superficial fingerprint with a dirty rag or the hood, but that is just theater. For show. They don't really care. I knew one that not only charged full list price from worldpac to the customer but also made up reasons to charge for longer shop time and pretended to say they helped the customer out by not charging him for additional jobs. Except the extra job was not required. Discharged AC system unnecessarily just so they can recharge later at shop rate time. When an AC service would be cheaper. And then rounded up to the hour. And also played around pretending to adjust the hood to stall for time. Even the plastic fasteners that were missing from the radiator support was not replaced. Even for that expensive hours long job which should not take that long anyway. I recall the quoted time was hour to hour and a half and they stretched it to three with a half hour or so to recharge the system. Plus charging for the freon as well. Thank you for being you. Used to be there were a lot of honest mechanics out there. But since the pandemic and Biden giving away free money, fairness in not gouging customers with little to give and hand over is rare nowadays. Very unfortunate.

when i was replacing valve cover gasket on my gen 2 prius, i do not pooped seal packing on timing chain cover, so, after month i got oil leaks from that area. im so sorry, that i dont seen this video before gasket replacement. nice video. very helpfull

You have the best videos Peter and I've watched my fair share of them...keep em coming please. As far as the bent metal on the inside corner of the valve cover, that's the way they all are. I thought mine was bent too, but the bent part is right by the oil fill hole, so I think it's bent to allow the oil to be poured in easier.

I don't scream at you like you said about the pieces still left holding the cover down, but I do often say some things I want you to say that I know you know. But you don't say it to make it easy for the viewer. Today was one of those times. FIPG: sealant oil resistant gasket maker. I don't remember you ever saying it before but I'm happy you said what the correct recommended product is for use by the OEM. As they say, one tube is expensive. But will last a lifetime. For the home user anyway. It is good to teach them about it. 👍

Good info and even better incentive to change my valve cover gasket. My 89 4AF still has the original and it's been slowly leaking. I the new Toyota gasket sitting for last year and have been putting it off. I now have the will to finally change it thanks to your video. I also need to get that FIPG from Toyota. Good advice.

Because the money is in the engine and transmission I’d bet you anything Peter would recommend you change your oil regularly, at 5,000 miles. Use the correct viscosity, replace the filter every change. Replace tranny fluid every 30,000 miles. Protect your engine from overheating by ensuring the thermostat is operating properly. Change it every 75,000 miles and you will be ahead of the game. Replace engine coolant every 100,000 miles. If people would do this they would be WAY AHEAD of the GAME.

Just watched your video from 7 yrs ago, same procedure. Torque specs 96 inch pounds 2 center bolts, 80 inch pounds for perimeter. Although I didn't use special sealer I used right stuff. Hopefully it holds. 🙏

Not for this engine.. however. You could remind some people that while the cover is off, sometimes there are o-ring seals in there that can be changed at the same time. They also become hard and brittle. I believe they are on engines that have the seals for VVTi-variable timing. Similar in size to the ones in the plastic baggy you had but of course like o-rings and not like grommets. Of course maybe you did not say this so people would not be confused.

You are correct when you said by feel. I want to emphasize that and let people know who are doing this job that technicians oftentimes use feel more that sight to work. Even the backyard mechanic can reasonably use this method. Many times you just cannot see the fastener.

Good video but for anyone attempting this DO NOT use a power tool on a hot valve cover or warm cover , they are made of aluminum and there’s a huge possibility that the threads will come out with the bolt

I had to replace my Corolla valve cover gasket a few times, same engine. So far, my 1.5 Yaris has 170k miles and never had to replace its gasket. Curious!

My wife has Yaris 2010 with manual transmission and 93000 miles (150000 km) on the odometer. I couldn't stand that little car when we purchased brand new. After owning and maintaining Yaris for almost 12 years, I have to admit now that Yaris is a superb and quality well-engineered sub-compact car. I never found a drop of any liquid under the car and nothing ever broke down. If Toyota would still offer the same car I would buy another two.

@@peterfernandezjr5914 Yes it does. More I get to know that car and more that I work on that car. I do everything myself. Excellent engineering and good materials considering it belongs to the most affordable and sub-compact group of automobiles. Last weekend I took the wheels off the car to check the brakes and I was surprised to discover that front rotors are completely straight and smooth and the surface is like mirror. There is at least 50% material left on the brake pads. They are original brakes! When I owned Mazda 323 and Protege, I had to replace brake rotors every 30000 kilometers. They used to be good cars but not even close to Toyota. If there is one complaint about Yaris, it is about manual transmission. It is rough, not as good as the manual transmission on my 2006 Corolla. I don't think that a new Yaris with three cylinders and a turbo charger will be as reliable as our old car. I would always choose a bigger engine over a smaller engine with a turbo.

I liked that after you out the cover back on that you checked again. One story I saw and you probably are not surprised, but they had gone to a quick lube oil stop place and they told them he needed a valve cover gasket. The technician rolled the gasket in the rear and didn't check and it leaked so much oil! More reason to present what you has said before. Avoid the chain oil change places or else.

The 2 plastic screw for the top cover may be replaced by M6 - 1.0mm thread metric screws, try 12 mm or may be 16 mm long ones. Those crappy plastic screws don't last, better replace them with metal. I didn't know the plastic rail of the coil's connector actually blocks the coil coming out from the spark plug well, and I pried out #3 cylinder coil and damaged the circular cylinder cover on the coil. Is that OEM or Fel Pro gasket ? Did the 2 screw garments come with the gasket or you have to buy separately ? BTW, is there a way to measure the resistance of primary and secondary coil in this kind of coils to test if they are good or not ? Thanks

I’m going to due this job on my 2005 Tundra was going to order the OEM parts, but was also thinking about going with Felpro gaskets. Do you recommend or just stay with OEM. Let me know was going to order parts today. Was glad to to see this video post. Great job!!

I just did this on my 2007 Tundra. I’d recommend going OEM because the spark plugs seal are not the same as far a fit/quality. I’ve used Felpro on other cars with spotty results. Make sure you replace those breather hoses, PCV and order the and order the Toyota brand FIPG. You also have 2 half moons at the back of each head, carefully remove them, clean and reseal with FIPG. It’s a tedious job, but better to use the right quality replacement parts from the beginning.

I've tightened down a valve cover without a torque wrench, and it leaked. After using a torque wrench to tighten down valve covers, they have not leaked.

Use a good quality torque wrench as well! I snapped off a bolt doing torquing down the valve cover on my 2TR, it was only 15ftlb. My fault for using a Harbor Freight torque wrench.

Hot air rises, and heat is the enemy of all rubber and plastics, like coolant hoses and wire insulation. I have a garage, so I raise the hood to let the engine cool off as fast as possible after I return home. I would remove the beauty cover, but there are no electrical wires or pressurized hoses under it, and it is quite small. The tiny LED under hood trouble light goes off after about 40 minutes, so the battery doesn't get drained over night. Make sure the hood being open doesn't interfere with the car computer going to sleep, as they usually do after about 15, or so minutes, which could drain your battery. The hood (only) being open shouldn't interfere with the car computer shutting down after a programmed period of time, but you never know. I unscrew the plastic coolant cap on the overflow tank, so as to relieve the pressure on the coolant hoses and radiator. That might cause some problem on the newest vehicles, if the pressure in the cooling system is monitored. But on my old Ford Expedition, it isn't. Clean out the leaves and pine needles in the drainage passages below your windshield to prevent rusting. Never pressure wash under the hood of any vehicle. Water moving at high speed can get inside electrical connectors and stay there, causing corrosion. Use rags to clean under the hood. You can dampen them with mineral spirits to remove oily dirt from a cold engine and hoses. Never use gasoline to clean anything on a vehicle. You can use a shop vacuum cleaner where you are cleaning the head to suck up any chunks before they have chance to fall inside the engine.

I have been doing this as well. But no garage so I have to park and let it at least cool for a half hour with good open and beauty cowl removed. I'm almost tempted to remove the beauty cover permanently but it must be there for something. Maybe to protect the front bank of coils? It is extremely hot after even a short drive of coming to temp. Oil doesn't look burnt.

I have the same engine in my Corolla 1zze it's showing code p0125 and the cel keeps coming and going could it be the coolant temperature sensor or the thermostat ???

Have you read the code on Google and looked at the suggestions on forums? As a rule, diagnosis over the internet without seeing the car is going to yield poor guesses. Insufficient heat in engine in allotted time? Yes could be anything related to coolant including sensor. But why not start cheap? Do you have a blockage in the system? Does your upper hose feel hot? Is your thermostat stuck open? Take it out and test with a pot of boiling water and thermometer. Watch other KZbin videos with that code and your car model. Because it could be those things or even something else you don't know about. Find a good mechanic and maybe he won't charge an arm and a leg and get it right the first time.

People have more faith in Japanese vehicles. Read about the Fremont facility and you’ll understand why. American automotive manufacturing workers have had a long reputation of entitlement, having little pride in what they were doing, and producing shoddy vehicles. I think that perception may have changed over time, but that stigma is still there.

Anyone who was actually paying attention while it was open would have been aware of the top quality production standards at NUMMI. Finally, the millions and millions of impeccable Tacomas, Corollas and re-badged 'GM' vehicles produced by UAW members at that plant proved that the low quality products of the Detroit Big 3 resulted directly from low quality management and engineering standards not from worker issues.

Looking at the oil residue in the motor I would recommend to that person to either change oil more often or use a higher quality oil if using the same interval. No it is not sludge but the build up and color is enough where I don't like seeing that. But that is just me.
