Got an estimate to fix the problems from a garage and it was $1,100. Spent less than $6 at Lowe's and used about 70 cents worth of the materials to do this hack, which worked perfectly btw. Thanks!

So here is the outcome, I didn’t ever make it as far as hooking up a wire, I went through my fuses under the hood one last time to make sure they were all snug down, well I came across a pink 30 and a green 40 looked like they were In snuggly well to my surprise I pressed down on them and they WERENT fully snug down all they way. So I test drove it and to my SUPRISE I guess that’s what my problem was cause it’s running like a champ now. The fuses were BCM3 and BCM2 so I’m thinking maybe over time they just wiggled out Idk. But thanks for the video cause it definitely was what was next for me. Thanks

AWESOME!!!! My GF's car was not shifting, power steering light on and speedometer not working.... I originally searched to figure out what it was going to cost to fix the shifting problem and saw this video. I have to admit I was skeptical at first but I grabbed a nut, bolt, wire, a screwdriver and a couple sockets and to my surprise THIS WORKS!!!!!!!

Now I as well as all of you, should be contacting and filing a complaint for the wiring harness as a recall to the department of transportation! Just filed mine today! I am also going to call chevy directly now. But they wont listen unless we all file complaints with the department of transportation.

Tried 3 different TCMs (none of them fixed my problem) before I found your video, and this worked right away. Thanks for the help. For other people, my symptoms were: POWER STEERING message No speedometer function Inability to shift out of first gear (I drive an automatic 05 chevy cobalt coupe) Traction Control light on Shaking while stopping The symptoms would occur after a couple miles of driving, and once I shut the car off I would have to wait 1 - 8 hours before it would turn on. When it would refuse to turn on I would get no clicking sound, just silence. The car still shakes but fuck it its old and i fixed it with a 10gauge wire.

Air conditioner does not leak, battery has not died, power steering and all dash gauges work, and it cut out the interference sound and popping sound in my radio. Has mileage went from average 33 mpg to hitting a high over the weekend driving up north to 39.2 and averaging 37 even in town. Crazy. Thank you very much for this video.

For those who come to this video to try and fix this problem, the culprit is a bad ground on the front of the transmission. Open your hood and while standing in front of the engine bay, reach for the front of the transmission center right. There is a bolt with multiple ring terminals and more than likely they have corroded. Cut them off, clean everything as best you can and crimp or weld new terminals and hit it with either white or dielectric grease. Its the proper way to fix this problem.

Mathieu Levasseur THANK YOU! Saved me a bunch of time tracking it down. You’re 100% correct. I can’t upload pictures, but the one ground lead was corroded and fell apart. Took the lead off, stripped the wires back, soldered them together then soldered the wires to lead. Taped it up, put back together and works like a charm!! Don’t do this ghetto rig. FIX IT THE RIGHT WAY! And it’ll cost you less.

Before you buy a new TCM or Output Speed Sensor: My wife's car, a 2007 Cobalt LT (2.2 ecotec), showed these same symptoms. Ran ground wire as shown; cleaned corrosion from ring terminals as Mr. Levasseur suggested below, and power steering codes stopped - still no speedometer function or shift from first gear, though. Turns out I had an additional problem: the wires had melted a bit between TCM and output speed sensor on rear passenger side of transmission. The wiring (two wires, purple and yellow) splits from the main wire "pack" next to injector #1 and runs down behind the engine to sensor, which sits just behind front passenger axle. My wiring had nearly melted clean through about four inches above the sensor. I unplugged the connector from the sensor and soldered in new lengths of wire (if connector itself is intact, just replace the wires -- a new connector, ACDELCO PT #1798, will cost you $30-$50). At manufacture, all of these wires are wrapped in a heat-resistant conduit, but most of the conduit under the hood of my wife's car had essentially disintegrated -- leading to the wires touching the block and melting -- so I took this opportunity to re-wrap all wire under the hood in new conduit. It took two 5-foot packs of 3/8" conduit and one 5-foot pack of 1/2" conduit -- less than $15 for all of it -- to complete everything under the hood. While you're at it, I'd suggest purchasing new plastic retaining loops, which snap into pre-drilled holes in various brackets along the engine and act as guides for the wires, keeping them from physically touching the block/tranny. Many of mine were brittle with age and broke when removed. Thanks for a great video, Mr. Tyler.

Liquid electrical tape will help stop corrosion on your new ground. Also, sanding the paint off on the area the wire touches up by the strut will also make for the best connection possible. Rust and water are certainly the enemy of anything electronic!

Great tip. Just a FYI to properly fix it, replace the ground on the front of the transmission. They tend to get weak and break. There's an connection with 4 wires that tend to get weak. Just give it a pull and it should pull off due to a bad connector

Thank You ! It fixed ours! We had our car at a shop to have just the new hood painted. On the way home it had all these same problems. Figured it rained some while the hood was off. Very scary thinking about major costs for repairs. I believe there is a broken or corroded ground wire that causes this. My daughter had their Cobalt at a dealer and they installed a new column (900$) and then found a broken ground wire underneath the car that was really the problem. Thank you again for posting this.
@85gbody97
@85gbody97 7 жыл бұрын
That sticker is intended for a ground if you ever need a jump you have a positive post sticking thru the fuse bec and you use the strut tower stud for your ground. They do this cause depending on what car ya have the battery is in the trunk or under your back seat on Lucernes or LeSabers. Basically you can use any part of the front ground bolts as a ground point

I had the exact problems mentioned. Speedometer not working, car not shifting & a power steering warning on the dash without really having a power steering issue. This little trick worked! Hopefully it lasts can’t believe it was a simple fix like this. Very helpful video thanks a lot.

OMG! This worked like a charm. I tried grounding the TCM like you showed. Everything came back to normal. I thought maybe that needed to reset the issue, so I removed it and back came the problem. Can this grounding cause any other issue? Wow wow wow wow! Everything worked prior to having to jump start the vehicle. I am wondering where the ground may have been damaged at in the first place.

+Keith Bell What ZACH found was a major ENGINEERING defect. The fact that bolt holes to mount the unit to the chassis was NEVER considered by Chevy when they decided to install it in a plastic bracket over the computer, leaves NO WAY to ground the unit to the body. GROUNDING FAILURE means the "signal "from the Module CANNOT reach the computer because, the computer receives no signal! On my diagnostic computer, the failure registers as a BUS (fuse) failure or a transmission (MID) failure. CHEVY TECHS would NOT recognize the grounding failure. This fix is brilliant...ALL HAIL ZACH!

Actually, jumping the battery caused the problem. The tcm was damaged and shorted to b+ because someone reversed the cables momentarily during the jump start. The tcm gets it’s ground from the b/w wire at pin, I think, #39. No need for the module to be bolted to the chassis.

Ok found the problem you guys. I have an 06 cobalt SS. Same problem as this video. I replaced the TCM. Didn't fix it. I replaced the BCM. Didn't fix it. Did some research and hard diagnosis. It was the power steering control module attached to the steering column. And it was a biiitch to change. If you jump your car there is a good chance it fried it. There is also a recall on this so call your local dealer and give them your VIN. They will let you know if it's been done. The Cobalt has synced modules if one goes they all act funny. Hopefully this helps someone .

Although this is a good temporary repair you SHOULD repair it properly. Most the issues result from the ground bundle directly attached to the ground lug at the front of the transmission (near trans connector) there is a bundle of 5 or so ground wires that corrode and break. Cut them all back and install a new ground lug. Will cause issues in many systems.

How did you get the "computer cover" back on after installing the bolt? I bolted mine in the same place, but the bolt stops it from sliding back into place, which keeps the cover from going on properly. If I just place the cover on, the hood doesn't close properly.

I seriously have been so fucking aggervated and frustrated trying to narrow it down. Thank you so much for posting this man. You're a life saver. The LAST thing I wanted to do was take it to a shop.
