2006-2008 Chevy Cobalt Fuel Pump Replacement | Dangerous Fuel Leak Recall

This is Chevy Cobalt dangerous fuel leak part 2. Today I'm going to show you how to fix the fuel pump problem. This Cobalt has a fuel leak coming from the top of the tank. After removing the tank it's easy to see the fuel pump is our culprit.

Thank for this video. I am facing exactly the same problem. I am seeing signs of liquid fuel right where the fuel lines leading to the fuel filter come off the top of the tank. Now I understand why the smell is so bad even though there are no drips yet. The top of the fuel pump and the channels for the two fuel lines on the top of the tank are obviously saturated with fuel and this is all evaporating making my garage stink. 2007 Cobalt.

I finished my repair a few months ago, same procedure as this video. I bought an aftermarket Chinese fuel pump on Amazon which was just a bit more than 1/3 the price of the GM part. Seems to be working fine so far, except the fuel gauge is reading differently and I don't trust the km remaining. The fuel level shown is not too different, but shows the tank as being a bit more full than it really is. The old fuel pump was still working, but leaking at the heat shrunk fuel line fittings on the top of the pump, just as shown in this video. The plastic lines had become brittle and were cracking there. In fact I flexed the lines to see if they had any strength left, and they both snapped right off. I did a "fix" on the old pump to keep it as a backup, and it seems like my fix might work. I bought 6mm lamp pipe nipples, which are basically threaded nickel plated steel tubes. Then I tapped both ends of the plastic fuel tubing using an M6x1 tap and cut the threaded tubes to size using a dremel tool. I have no way of pressure testing this fix, and I'm not sure I would go through the trouble of removing/reinstalling the fuel tank with an untested fix in the future. The result might be continued fuel leaks, especially if the plastic fuel line that I tapped is too degraded.

Just wondering why you didn’t just remove the rear seat cushion which gives you access to the fuel pump and you don’t need to drop the tank.. Takes 2 min to remove.

Hey Terry, unfortunately this vehicle doesn't have access under the seat. The only way to change the pump is to remove the tank.

Where did you find your fuel pump at and has the customer had any problems with it since you changed it?

The fuel pump was from the local parts store. I've done other work on their vehicle since this repair and the pump is running strong. No more fuel leaks 👍

Hey budd i got a quick question.. I believe who ever repaird my cobalt took the fuel filter out of the system im Guessing to get by some evap code or something. Now i gotta replace the fuel pump, do you think i can put a fuel filter back in the system.? also is this possible or are some cobalts fuel filter free?

This just happened to me in my cobalt and they told me there wasn't any recall. But the problem with my car was this "recall". Fuel pump module Crack. Replaced it and my fuel tank

Ok...I replaced it twice...same leak same spot that this one has in the video...is there a aftermarket fuel line to replace it...or do I really need to buy another pump...it's like every year it start to leak at that line

Aw man that's annoying! unfortunately as far as I know the fuel line doesn't come separately. Not sure what brand you are using. I've noticed a decline in the quality of aftermarket parts lately. Hopefully you have some kind of warranty on the part. If it keeps happening I would recommend an OEM pump.

@@ValleyMobileAutomotive that's what GM said was to buy from them instead of auto zone or Napa but I never heard that there was a difference on material used to make these pumps...might try to convert to steel line if I can thread the inlet on the pump...it's just that the pump still works but lines keep snapping their. I'll let you know if I find out how to bypass it all..lol

GM called me back today and said one of the mechanic has the same problem and there is a replacement part for that line...but didn't remember what it's called but it can be replaced by you local auto parts store...so I'll do more research...or try an OEM pump
