2006-2017 LS 460 change Ignition Coils and Spark plugs. Easy!!

This video entails me going through the process of changing the Ignition coils and spark plugs on a 2009 Lexus LS 460. The process is a bit tedious but not hard far as difficulty. I also elaborate on some of my tips and techniques, hopefully this helps someone.

Why did you decide to change out your ignition coils? What was transpiring with your LS 460? I ask because I’ve been having some hesitation that has increased over the last 1000 miles. I am at 165k.

Well it was the same for me. The overall performance felt a little sluggish. Not from when I first got the car. Also when the car was idling it was pretty loud. So to answer you question, it was the performance and fuel consumption it’s not the best on gas in general but anything helps. I think at the time of the video I was at maybe 154k. The hesitation maybe a separate issue not related to coil and plugs.

to help you, I am currently having my plugs and coil replaced after having throttle body replaced. Codes came for throttle body but all of that works together.

Leon in case you haven't fixed this yet - get your coils checked. If you are strapped and have to DIY, a lot of people just swap coils between cylinders, and if a misfire changes to that cylinder then you probably have a bad coil. But that is the hard way of checking them, of course. I'd change the plugs and see how much that helps, first before I went buying new coils, they are about $165 a set of 8 non-OEM and I saw a set of OEM coils for $230. If one were bad I'd change them all if i could afford it that week.

You need a swivel with that socket and your plug socket should be fitted with the rubber booth that grips the plug once its loose. All these videos are showing the passenger side of the vehicle where it's easy , lets see what happens on the drivers/left side.

I just did my driver side plugs. Yes, a swivel and extension was needed to loosen/tighten/remove/replace the plugs, especially the back 3 plugs. The driver's side on my 2011 LS460 also has a noise deadening insulation piece that interferes with removing the back two coils and seals. I had to loosen but not remove that piece in order to remove the back two.

I understand what you are saying. I didn’t have the socket you speak of nor a swivel. A lot of my tools were displaced at the time. I did the job with the tools you see. I was able to get the plugs out just fine. When I was editing the video I didn’t see the need to annotate the driver side process so I didn’t include it. Thank you for the feedback I definitely want to make things that seems daunting user friendly as possible.

I got to the passenger side last weekend and the battery tray didn't interfere with the last plug but the alternator cable was a pain to work around on the third plug so I open the electrical box where the junction for the alternator and positive battery cable go so I could unfasten the alternator cable. Unfortunately, I forgot to tighten it down and got an intermittent check generator warning. I figured that was the issue so it didn't take long to resolve the problem.

Right!! Normally plugs and coils are not as involved. Normally pretty straightforward but was glad i came up with a remedy in reference to this car.

It's a terrible design in my opinion for repairs. It was time for the second change of my spark plugs so i was about to do that this week but my starter went out on the way home last night 😫

Sheesh!! That’s tough. I hope that didn’t keep you down too long. My starter is still going strong but when it goes I will be making a video lol. I make videos as things break.
