Every cars got its quirks and this rear brake job has a few of them. The caliper bolts are so tight and they are hardened torques or Starbit. It’s hard to find the right Starbit that will fit. Chances are the Volkswagen Passat is identical.

You went about the hard way of taking off the caliper, the 8mm allen screw is for removing the 2 rotor bracket screws, the caliper bracket comes off by using a 13mm and a 15mm wrench. If all you was going to change was the pads, removing the caliper bracket would be all you have to remove, also no need in loosing the bleeder valve to bring caliper piston in, but one thing to remember is on the Audi A4 the piston turns back in, not just pushes back in, it takes a special screw in tool to get the piston back in,also use a turkey baster to remove some of the brake fluid from the brake fluid holder so as not to push too much fluid in the reservoir, you can also use a pair of needle nose pliers to turn the piston in. reason i know is doing the rear rotors and pads on 2003 Audi A4 1.8t as i write.

Vw calipers require turning whilst pushing the pistons in as they are on a thread, electric hand brake models require the handbrake to be released fully via a computer and can then just be pushed back.

wish I'd read the comments before I started, I melted the slider boot when I heated up the Allen bolts that are solid, all you have to do is undo the slider bolts , also a grinder disc key works for the pistons btw

You could use some penetration oil for rusted bolts, nuts and parts. First remember to clean them from debris. Those caliper bracket bolts can be a nightmare, the location is shitty. As said before you could have only taken the caliper off and leave the bracket on the car. And the piston should be turned and pushed...because of the emergency brake/handbrake/parking brake.

I changed pads and rotors without removing bracket,, did not even mess with them bolts you used extractor on.

TheGreekGod1488 the bracket was only thing that stayed on car, I was still able to grease slides .

Nice work with the Irwins. But you‘ve done some mistakes. You shouldn‘t push the brake piston back in its position, you need to push and turn it. There is a tool for that task. The turning is neccessary because of the brake calipers integrated handbrake mechanism which you might have destroyed. If you use the special tool there is no need to open the bleed valve. While replacing the shims you made the next mistake. After removing the shims it is important to clean and prepare the caliper holder. Because of high metal the distance between lower and upper contact area is too small. That‘s the reason why your brake pads don‘t fit as easily as they should. Greetings from Germany

I really appreciate your input, I was wondering what this specialty tool looked like, I have a tool that spins back a caliper with two Nebs on it. I tried this too but it didn’t seem to retract when I was spinning it I’m going to do some research to try to find this tool and process, would there be a link to show the process or the tools. There’s never a day I don’t learn something new. Any information you could share on this process would be great. Thanks again.

What will cause my brakes to seize and the car looses power and after the brakes cool off then it feels normal for a minute then starts up on the issues again

Yep, Volkswagen drives me nuts with there specialty hardware. They even put their axle nut with a 12 point bolt similar to their triple square but in reverse.

They are called multi hex (external) or spline (internal) if they have 12 sides. Torx are six sided the external. Version is called e torx. Ribes are similar to torx but have square corners. Some brands are using a torx+ type head now which looks like a cross between torx and spline

YOU HAVE TO SPIN IN THESE CALIPER PISTONS DURING RETRACTION OR YOU CAN RUIN THE CALIPERS' SELF ADJUSTING CAPABILITIES.

Give the kid a break. He managed to do it apparently and it worked. Maybe some helpful tips instead of straight criticism. We were all beginners at one point. Dont steal this kids passion with shitty attitudes.

So many things wrong with this as has already been said. For re-fitting the wheel centre caps it is simply a matter of lining up the hole in the cap with the wheel valve. A serious lack of knowledge on display here.
