I was at this camp. (You can see my big head blockin' the view at one point.) Sensei was an incredibly powerful man physically and possessed an uncommon intensity. Here he is just showing basic tai-sabaki, e.g. like how to absorb power and return it (among other lessons). Only at 2 or 3 points do you see him move with anything near the speed/power of actual application. For the people grasping him, it is a method of development of body, mind and spirit (survival forges you). If you think this training process is "dance", you're ignorant at best, but more likely afflicted with the nihilistic idiocy of the age. Chiba Shihan is missed.

He was a true warrior. Scary to take ukemi for him. You had to be 100% alert at all times.

This is one of the many exercises to learn to breath and feel how to balance your body in a context of contact. If you do not go through this learning (for both tori and uke), you don't get any further in aikido. And the chance to get hurt in the meanwhile is high.

You should ask Maczek ( between 7 and 8 and 9.50 and 11.50 ...3 long minutes ) what he thinks about your remark .And we all regret not to be able any more to offer you an opportunity to try and make an opinion ...

@Alex Scott Did you realize how tense the uke (not beginners) were? That's for a reason. They learned Zanshin the hard way, Chiba sensei was not an easy going one, very demanding with the high graders. I was at the summer camp a few years after this one, and after a training session was introduced to him by my trainer. We were shaking hands with a not lax grip, and he kept a straight face. Doesn't sound remarkable itself, except for the fact he had two broken fingers from a bokken hit the training session before. Didn't realize it until I felt one of his dislocated finger in some wrong position. You don't have to like Aikido, but if you're a halfway experienced, open eyed martial artist you will identify valuable lessons in this clip, regardless of what your art is.
