In this video, I replaced the water pump on a 2006 Ram 1500 4x4 with the 5.7L Hemi. It is a fairly straightforward process, and definitely something a DIY'er or mechanically inclined person can tackle.
Time needed: About 2 hours
Tools needed: Serpentine belt removal tool, Water pump pulley tool, 36mm wrench (for cooling fan), misc. metric sockets/wrenches (13mm, 15mm), some extensions, torque wrench, pliers, funnel, and a drain pan.
Other consumables needed: Zerex G05 antifreeze/coolant (or Mopar equivalent), Distilled Water, some rags.
Parts used in this video: Gates water pump, Gates thermostat/gasket.
I created this video with the KZbin Video Editor ( / editor )

Very nice refresher course. What i do to remember the bolt pattern is as I remove each bolt I put the bolt in the same location on the new water pump. Then after i remove the old pump i set the pump next to the new pump and transfer the bolts to the new one one at a time.

Ok so: 1. Remove Bolts and Place on New Pump one at a time to keep track of placement 2. Transfer all Bolts to Old Pump from New Pump to same places after removal (Both pumps are now off) 3. Place new water pump on and remove bolts one at a time from old pump to original placement Thank you I didn't think of that, going to use it tomorrow!

This video should serve as the benchmark for other video providers on HOW TO SHOOT and EXPLAIN and PERFORM the advertised heading. Very well done. I get tired of being entertained (NOT) by posters who make the videos long and drawn out with stupid babble. Brevity is OUR FRIEND. I wanted to add my 2008 had 2 plastic pushpins holding the bottom of the radiator shroud in which surprised me when I went to lift the shroud out. Your detail of what tools needed, and the socket sizes and I even followed the suggestion by one of the contributors when I took a bolt out of the water pump I put in in the hole on the new water pump and then transferred them to the old as a template for the new. EXCELLENT! Keep up the great work. And thank you for being a professional producing a quality video.

First thing I had thought was the radiator was blocked, but the top hose was collapsed. When I pulled the thermostat out and started the engine, the hose didn't collapse but there was a weak flow going into the radiator. Guess I'll put a radiator flush thru the system when I get the new water pump and thermostat this week just to be sure it's clear. Thanks for the video and info, you gave me some great feedback quickly. The engine seems the same, just where the recovery tank and air filter and hoses are different.. Again, thanks..

Great video. The hardest part by far is removing the fan clutch while restraining the pump pulley, the required torque spec is about 40 ft lbs to remove the fan clutch, but some are on a lot tighter if its been on there for over 10 years.

Michael Boggio: Basic rule of thumb, if you didn't use a template like I did to keep track of the bolts: look at the thickness of the water pump at each of the bolt hole locations. The thickest parts use the longer bolts, the thin parts use the short bolts.

Excellent video! Very detailed and complete. My only comment is that I like to use Permatex silicone sealant for antifreeze systems on all of the gasket surfaces and on the hose pipes. Through experience I have had O rings and gaskets weep/ leak after a year or two. Using the silicone sealant makes the repair permanent and leak tight.

..Have to change the water pump on my wife's 2006 Durango 5.7 tomorrow...watching this, hope it is basically the same as this Ram...as a side note, I am amazed how many metric wrench and socket sets omit 15mm and 18mm sizes..very frustrating and makes no sense..2 of the most commonly used sizes on pretty much all domestic vehicles since the mid-late 1980's..not sure about imports, I don't have any of those...to add insult to injury, they usually DO include seldom-or-never used sizes such as 9, 12, and 17mm....

Thank you so much for the video, excellent quality and instruction! How long are people seeing these Gates pumps last? Going to do mine here in a bit but leaning on OE; 4x the price but too many accounts of poor quality since moving to China.
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 2 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty picky about the parts I put into vehicles. I normally avoid Chinese parts as much as I can. In this case I used a Gates pump, which unfortunately was of Chinese manufacture…but I took a gamble as this job isn’t terribly difficult or overly time consuming on this vehicle. That truck is still on the road with the owner happily driving it. With that said, I recently did a Durango with a 5.7 and went with a Napa pump - dealer did not have a Mopar one in stock, but my local Napa had several. I was pleasantly surprised to see the Napa one was made in Canada. Looked to be the OE pump with the Chrysler emblems scratched off. Sometimes you get lucky with Napa parts.

are there any engine purge valves to help getting air out of engine coolant chamber? I did this on a toyota pickup once & engine overheated because not enough coolant got in
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 6 жыл бұрын
Nick Romano not on this engine. A lot of foreign vehicles have these purge valves but some domestic rigs like this Ram are straightforward and nearly self-purge on their own. Just make sure coolant level is up in both the expansion tank and the radiator and you should be fine assuming your thermostat is good.
@OVI-Wan-Kenobi-8
@OVI-Wan-Kenobi-8 Жыл бұрын
15:45 I don't think it matters if the hole on the thermostat is up or down or to the side, as long as the thermostat is inserted in the correct direction of flow. The water pump and thermostat housing is going to be full of coolant when the engine is running hot so it doesn't really matter if the hole is up or down or to the side because it will still be fully submerged in fluid.
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper Жыл бұрын
The hole or jiggle pin needs to be oriented up. It’s there to aid in the removal of any air trapped on either side of the thermostat, more specifically before the engine has reached full operating temperature. Some vehicles don’t utilize an air bleed in the thermostat, but some do. It’s always best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations, and in this case they pointed this out in the factory service procedure…which is why I also mention it in my video.

@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 6 жыл бұрын
fanaticofutube The water pump on this truck developed a leak. I could see that the leak was at the water pump weep hole. This is a sign that the water pump shaft seal failed. It is not a replaceable seal, so the whole pump needed to be replaced.

Looks like I may have to dig in to verify and look for the weep hole. and see if it's leaking from there. Thanks!
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 6 жыл бұрын
fanaticofutube The weep hole was really tricky on this one. It is hidden by the water pump pulley. But I could see the leak coming from behind the pulley with the engine running so I knew it was the water pump and not something else. Hope you are able to find the cause of your leak! Good luck!

I have a 2006 Durante with the 5.7 Hemi. Under the hood it looks a little different, but the engine should be the same right ? Durango started over heating and the top hose collapsed from the suction. I pulled the thermostat to check if it was maybe not opening. Reconnected the thermostat housing and top hose, refilled the system and took it for a test. Still getting over heating but not as fast. The top hose didn't collapse. Took the top hose off the radiator and started the engine with a waterhose in the radiator inlet. The pump doesn't seem to have any pressure. I had back flushed the radiator and it is clear of obstructions. My question is , How many gallons per minute should the water pump be pumping to keep the Hemi cool ?
@AKJeeper
@AKJeeper 6 жыл бұрын
The engine in a Durango is pretty much the same. Sounds to me like you may have a restriction in your radiator, or possibly a faulty water pump. I am not sure what the GPM rating for the water pump is, as it is not specified in the factory service manual.

@AKJeeper

Rohirn absolutely not necessary on these as they have a good rubber gasket. The use of silicone sealant on something like this could actually cause a leak. The factory does not use nor recommend silicone sealant and I don’t either.

Sounds like the coolant level is low. When the engine is cold, remove the radiator cap, and fill the radiator with a 50/50 mix of coolant. Be sure that the coolant tank is filled to the MAX mark, so that as the cooling system burps itself - it can take coolant from the tank and keep the radiator full.

What if my heater core is bad and not working? Will the system still bleed ok?
@AKJeeper

If your heater core is plugged up or leaking, the system may not bleed properly. It's best to bypass the heater core in this case (take the two heater core hoses and connect them together with a hose union), before bleeding the system.

@AKJeeper

Classic symptom of a cooling system that hasn't been burped completely. You're hearing the air bubbles in the heater core, which is located roughly on the passenger side behind the glove box. What's the coolant level like in the expansion tank? Once the engine has cooled down (overnight or at least a couple of hours) - pop the radiator cap off and make sure the radiator is topped off.

@@AKJeeper thanks for the reply I just popped the hood and the level in the expansion tank is at the add level. Can't believe they didn't top it off. I'll fill it and hope that takes care of it thanks again for the info

@@j.r.elpadrino7050 Maybe you mean the power steering pump pulley? I talk about tightening it at 22:15-22:19

@@j.r.elpadrino7050 The input speed sensor is on the driver's side of the transmission, toward the front of the transmission (closer to the bellhousing). The output speed sensor is toward the rear of the transmission. The sensor themselves are the same part number.

If you're absolutely certain that you have all the bolts out, give the water pump a good smack with a rubber mallet.
