Thanks for the information although i found it a little too late after totally shedding to Allen key hole. We were below two sets of Rapids, 25 miles from the nearest road and no internet service we made do with what we had. Two brains, five hands and a bucket of tools we managed to get the belt back on. This all happened last week and since getting back to Internet access and researching KZbin has been throwing random videos my way. Yours has been the most helpful. Thanks again.

Thank you. Going through the process now to replace the crank seal. New there had to be a simple solution to the tensioner. Appreciate the information.

Glad it helped. I had this boat for a while before I glanced through the manual and notice it had a timing belt after years and years running it and not knowing it had a timing belt I figured I got lucky.

Thank you for the very enlightening information. Does anyone know how long these timing belts last? How many hours and/or how much time?

Those are the same tensioner used on the 4.2l vf sho as well. Thanks so much for his as I will be doing my sho, soon . 1 question, while he led to belt was in place did you bring all the marks into place or did you just mark places on block to put new belt back on ,I would think that you could get it to tdc and then just slide new belt on . If that made sense at all

Thanks for the information that's great to know. I mark the old belt with a mark on each component since this is just a maintenance belt replacement. Then I transfer the marks to the new belt as a backup and make all the marks line up and keep the tensioner side as the loose side until tension is applied. So between the cam and crank all need to be tight then at least attention on the slack side. This is something you want to check several times and rotate it around by hand sure it stays in place and attention behaves itself. I have been told this is an interference fit motor get the alignments are off things can get bent. This is a time when it's good to check things several times very careful save hours of aggravation plus a whole bunch of money. Really appreciate you sharing information.

Yes they are interference I too am a tech . 22 years ford .no longer but use to.its kinda like a car butt different always keeping slack to tensioner side is same. I was thinking about as maint belt (you specified)so you answered my question and thank you for your response so fast. I'm sure that the flywheel and starter magnets are going to be a pain.so thank you Craig I really appreciate your input hope you're having a very merry Christmas and I hope you have a Happy New Year

Hi Turner, I looked at the document I had and it has no number on it. I went to Google and did a search for Yamaha technical service bulletin and could not find the same sheet. But I also found this ( SIM Yamaha Parts Advisory: Yamaha 4-stroke Timing Belt Tensioner (THIS IS THE LINK- blog.simyamaha.com/sim-yamaha-parts-advisory-yamaha-4-stroke-timing-belt-tensioner/) This advisory applies to all hydraulic timing belt tensioners that are used on Yamaha 4-stroke outboards, F150HP and up. Once the tensioner and timing belt are installed, DO NOT PULL AND REMOVE PIN. Use the same Allen wrench and procedure used to release the tensioner to remove the belt. (See SIM Yamaha Tensioner Bulletin) Carefully apply the same tension (maximum 11ft lbs) to the tensioner to enable the circular pin to easily slide out. Do not grab the pin like a pull string to remove it. Doing so could aerate the fluid in the internal hydraulic cylinder which could decrease the overall tension on the timing belt. This will lead to premature timing belt failure and possible engine damage.) Hope it helps you find what you are looking for.

I would luv to see your video on the timing belt, plus the vale adjustments Craig. What was the condition of the belt tensioner like? Mine has never been replaced 1000hrs service due now, my manual says to inspect or replace ?? I did find the belt tension lose when i looked at it, not sure why ??

Hi Ian, No video on the belt replacement. (sorry) The tensioner was in great shape, I think as long as the oil has not leaked out of it it should be ok to reuse, it would only be a small stain as it's capasity is very small but if I saw that I would replace it. I felt lucky my belt did not break from age. The old belt still did look good but had been on there for 10 years and lots of hours. The hardest 2 things on the whole job was getting the flywheel to come off (even with the correct puller) and understanding out how the tensioner worked. Thanks for the question.

Craig's Car Care thanks Craig appreciate you response. I have had a noise I fist thought it was a vibration from the cowling but the cowling seemed good when clamped on. Than it sounded like water cavition but I found the tension belt lose. I realized only then how lucky I was it didn't slip a notch it would have been devastating I will take your advice and look for oil stain. But I don't won't to take a risk that it might be faulty tensioner. I just not worth the risk. What do you call a lot of hrs? Mine has 1000 hrs. I also found that my flywheel is half a turn out .... the I marks line up on the two came shaft pulleys and the crank case shaft and housing A bit weird ???!? Thank again Ian
