Your first question is definitely a mechanic question. I'm not sure on that. If your car isn't starting, it's usually 1 of 3 things. This switch, the starter itself or the battery. It does not require a re-programmed key because you're changing out the opposite side of the key cylinder.

Great Vid! My 2008 Honda Civic cranks and starts but as soon as I let fo of the key it dies. About a month ago or so I was going about 75 on the highway and suddenly all of the lights on my dashboard/panel turned on and then turned off and I tried putting gas but nothing, so I slowly pulled over, took the key off and then inserted it once more and it started. Ever since, twice it's given me issues in turning on and today I kept trying to turn it on, and as much as it stays on when I crank it and leave the key in all the way, as soon as I let go of it, the car shuts off. The shop has no idea what it is but I just e-mailed my mechanic to try the ignition switch because they can't figure it out. We'll see what they say. Thanks!

So I'm running into an issue where the car sometimes turns on with the OEM key but shuts off immediately. I thought it might be the fuel pump but that's working. Weirdly enough my aftermarket remote start is the only thing that gets the car started. It will run and drive after the remote start. But not when the key turns it over. Side note I've heard like random grinding noise and my rear brake lights don't turn on unless I hit the brake. Any thoughts?
@nukem3843 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have some issues with that car. I would check your electrical system to be sure. Yeah, that is weird that the remote start works, but stock doesn't. IMO, adding aftermarket parts always makes things more complicated. It could be your key cylinder too, check that as well. That could be the issue. Maybe it's not communicating with the ECU and that's why the car is shutting off. Grinding noise from where? Rear brakes? And what do you mean your brake lights don't turn on unless you hit the brake? Isn't that when they are supposed to turn on? I'm assuming you mean when you flip your headlights on, the tail lights don't light up? And they only light up when you hit the brakes?
@FishHeadsIV3 жыл бұрын
@@nukem384 when I turn the lights on for driving at night, the rear lights don't come on unless I hit the brakes. The grinding noise I'm not sure. @nukem3843 жыл бұрын
@@FishHeadsIV The brake light thing. You probably need new bulbs. The tail lights are double filament bulbs. That means that when you turn the headlights on, one filament set turns on (probably busted in your case) and then when you hit the brake pedal, the 2nd filament set turns on until you let off the brake pedal (flashes). Without hearing it or knowing exactly where it's coming from, I'm just going to be guessing. But if it's coming from the exhaust area, it could be one of your exhaust hangers is broken, and the muffler and/or exhaust piping is vibrating against the frame momentarily when you turn the engine over. And it happening inconsistently would support some sort of piping rubbing because the vibration power, if you will, isn't always going to be exactly the same strength.

The electrical system is really tough to diagnose yourself without the right tools. For this car, the starter is terribly hard to install (I have a tutorial on it, so I know). So what I would do is just try the ignition switch since it's a lot cheaper and easier, and if that doesn't fix it, then you'll have to do the starter. At that point, at least you'd know the electrical system will be good for a while.

How do you know you needed to change ignition switch? My civic currently takes like 5 minutes to start after sitting overnight. No crank or any noise. Just keep turning till finally the starter tries and starts right up.

That sounds like you might need a new battery? I'm not there, so I can't say for sure. But usually with ignition problems, it's usually 3 things. Battery, starter, or this ignition switch. You might want to check your connections too and make sure there isnt battery acid, etc on there, as that could cause a bad connection which could be causing your problem.

I'm having the same exact problem with my 2011 accord, I've changed the battery and starter.. still doing the same thing, so now I'm here lol

@@Duble214 Hopefully this fixes it then. This is basically the only other thing unless your alternator is dying.

Rudy Perez yeah so I checked the ignition switch with a test light and got 12V also tested battery with test light and got 12v so I moved to the relay which is also good. I put my phone to record while I tried to start and can hear a slight click which is the relay working. I rolled the dice and replaced the starter. Starter was the issue.

@@Orteezy28 That's actually what I'm doing this weekend. Car is still having issues starting. Battery and alternator are still good according to the test light. Hopefully the starter fixes it. Not looking forward to the install though.

Have any of you had your honda civic start and then automatically die or start sometimes and then not start at All? Im just curious because thats waht my cars doing right now. I need to figure out whats wrong with it
@nukem3842 жыл бұрын
That sounds like it might be an electrical issue with the ignition system.
@caitlinohanlan16692 жыл бұрын
@@nukem384 do you think if i replace that ignition switch it will fix the issue or is it more than that?
@nukem3842 жыл бұрын
@@caitlinohanlan1669 It's probably going to be more than that. When I said electrical, I meant something with the entire system, not just one part. You could give it a try and see since the part isn't super expensive. But if that doesn't fix it, a trip to the mechanic might be in order. The electrical system is a bit complex and unless you know what you're doing, probably best not to try and mess around with it.

BOTH of those screws are impossible to get to!

What could be a little easier is there are screw sockets for a socket wrench you could use for more leverage to unscrew them

I just changed the alternator last year on my 2008 Honda civic coupe. I’ve been having some scratches noises when I try to start but as I keep messing with it turns over. I just change the starter yesterday which was a pain and it’s still doing that noise when I try to turn car over. Any idea what should I do next?
