Peak Honda. Simple, reliable, straightforward. The dashboard shifter is unusual for a crossover but the dash-mounted parking brake is unique. Apart from the Lexus GX and G-Wagen you don't see side-opening tailgates any more because upward hatches are more convenient in tight spaces. I love how these and the Rav4 used to have the spare tire on the back despite having no pretense of off-roading. If you need "a car" one of these will do well.

I took my 2006 CRV off-roading with some friends just to see what it could do, and it actually surprised us. Had to leave it behind once we got to some very sharp rocks because I didn't feel like puncturing a tire, but it had just enough ground clearance and all the traction in the world. Probably could've completed the whole trail with better tires. Truly the perfect all around car

I agree. I just bought a 2008 CR-V this year and while it only has just over 100,000 miles there are a lot of things I wish it still had that the previous gen did like the mounted spare tire and the overall car being less bulky. It is essentially the same k-series engine and transmission but it doesn't feel as light and agile as the previous gen. Each one has their pros and cons. I still say it's one of the most reliable SUVs you can buy right up there with the RAV4.

i really want this generation of CR-V since the size of the car is exactly what i'm looking for... but for Philippine standards, the fuel consumption is just not that good.

I have a 2nd gen CRV, and I absolutely love how utilitarian it is compared to nearly all other crossover SUVs (except for the Element). There's really nothing like it, and it's sad that Honda kind of abandoned that utilitarian, outdoorsy, truck-like philosophy for the later generations. There's really nothing like it for sale today besides maybe the Bronco Sport. But that's about it

My wifes 2005 currently has 202k and is still going well , albeit with some minor problems. The AWD is great, it can get almost as many places as my Tacoma. I will say while I like the car, it has some of the most uncomfortable seats for long trips. Also that table has come in handy so many damn times its ridiculous.

Great review. I currently own one of this, got it as my second car, caught myself just driving this. Loved it so much that actually sold my 8th gen Civic Si. Forgot to mention that the back seats actually reclined and move forward and back, wich most modern SUVs dont do nowadays.

I have an 06 SE auto. Love this thing to death. Threw some roof racks on to haul my kayaks on. Can confirm that this car is "Granola". that table has come in handy many times as well. My only complaint is there is nothing else in the back deck to hold it up when the table is out, so if you have stuff back there it all sags down when the table is removed and you have to really shuffle stuff to get the table back in.

I got mine 2 months ago in the 2.0 RVI auto derivative which was unfortunately the only option available in my country at the time of release. Brilliant vehicle, can basically do anything you need it to do on a day to day basis without any complaints or issues. Major cons are fuel consumption and under-powered but it's something that I've adapted to. On the inside, I basically like the design because it's minimalist in nature yet suits all needs perfectly. The RVi is very basic with a cloth interior that has held up extremely well as with the plastics and other trims being no exception. I love the seat folding system which is better than most SUV's however when the seats fold back completely the way they do, you do lose a tiny bit of loading length, just letting the guys who like to load longer items know but it's still great because you are basically loading on the level floor of the vehicle as opposed to the back of the seats. Another problem is the weak AC system. For anyone who is used to a classic car setup, it will take you a few days to get used to the layout of the cockpit but in 2 weeks, you won't want to drive another vehicle. The picnic table is awesome!!! So far she has excelled my expectations and is more than capable of handling any urban or light off road situations with the utmost of ease. As long as it's not crazy serious off roading, the AWD system of that period is capable of handling harsher terrain than most standard luxury or mainstream SUV's. What that essentially means that she is able to handle almost any weird situation or you will at least be able to make your own routes past obstacles if need be. Build quality is like a tank, everything about her seems solid from the doors to the steering and road holding is phenomenal but don't expect sports car handling because she is an SUV after all. I've driven BMW X3 2.0d and X5 M50D and while both outperform the CRV by miles in terms of performance, luxury and comfort in all classes they unfortunately will not outlive this vehicle and so it always comes down to the factor of longevity and reliability. I see this as a vehicle I would like to keep long term and rreally see how much I can get out of her.

In the UK made CRVs (mine's 06 2.2 i-cdti), the 'storage' space above the air controls has a circulation switch and is a chiller compartment 🎉 There is no cupholder where yours has, it has an ash tray. Also, the back door, the upper glass opens separately on the tailgate. I use it regularly, very handy. Just to note that you never need to buy new headlights, they buff up great. Got mine done recently and they're as new. I added 2 halogen spots a few years ago, on a switch, and the CRV is so satisfactory all around. Mine' on 230k miles, had it 6 years and wouldnt part with it even if I won the Euromillions. Apart from perhaps an Element or Pilot, these are perfection. Extremely capable with the right tyres. Eg. BFG K02s for offroad or Dunlop Grandtrek SJ6 for extreme snow (I picked up cheap winters on Honda alloys for peanuts!). More capable offroad than most people are. But require use of momentum and a lot of skill as backend power can kick in and out at worst moments. So, diff locks miles better and all electronic miles better again for newbies. But few push crvs or any vehicle to the limit offroad. Bottomline, all around, they're unbeatable. I run mine on BFG Urban Terrain now. Just great. The wealthiest family in my region, an old money family, have 2 loyal working CRVs proudly parked beside their 17th century house, alongside the latest Landies and Mercs. Old Hondas have the hearts of lions 😂

Interesting quirk of this generation of CRV is that in some markets, you can get an eight seater option (a bench seat in the front and third row seating). The third row only good for small kids. Also some markets, you can fit an extra spare tire under that table.

The best CRV every built. After this model it went down hill like many other makes and models. It's does quite well off road, with a good driver, a little lift, good off road tyres it will go places that will surprise many... It's not a jeep it wasn't built for rock crawling. It's a nice design, simple, excellent reliability, simple to work on just how it should be. Plus it has one of the best engine's ever designed. In the update 05/06 the 5 speed auto is built proof, both need good maintenance to keep the longevity. Yes, one of the best SUV's every built. They have a great following.
