Today we take a in-depth look at my friend Bella’s 2006 Honda Odyssey! It’s a mid trim level (EX) with cloth interior and a silver exterior. Paired with the standard J35 3.5L V6 engine! With only 184,000 miles this van is far from unreliable and still has lots of life left!
If you enjoyed this video don’t hesitate to drop a like and share the video with someone else who you think would be interested in watching it.

This van was part of my childhood and I still see plenty of these everywhere, my dad had a honda van ex from 2004 instead and it was reliable when that generation had transmission problems.

Thanks for this review, I'm purchasing my 2006 Honda Odyssey EX as a 3rd vehicle today and wanted to make sure I was making the right decision. Love it!

The one I'm buying only has 7 seats, I have the extra seat that was in the back shown here from my last 2012 Honda Odyssey, will that seat happen to fit in the middle seat in the second row in the 2006 making an 8 seater by chance? (if that made any sense?, lol)

Just bought an 06' EX-L here in the PNW with 212,000 miles from a used car dealer. It was an auction car so not knowing it's maintenance history immediately changed the motor oil/filter and did a tranny flush. Instructions galore on KZbin on how to perform this. Also changed the tranny filter with help from YT as well. Honda says it is a lifetime filter but other than one of the battery tray bolts being hard to get at because of the need to access it from below and the shield in the way and need to remove it was easy enough. Got the tires rotated at my local Les Schwab and they indicated that the rear brakes were at 2mm and gave a price of $650 to replace pads and rotors. After watching a YT video it looked easy enough and ordered the parts from Amazon for $130 and will be doing that today actually. Have had a few Accords over the years in our family but am really impressed with the Odyssey, it's power and features. A much better van than the Chev Uplander it replaced. For the $2500 I paid for it and the $300 i'm putting into it, including registration, I am a happy camper.

Thanks for the walkthrough. That engines sounds like a true Honda engine. Brand new (regardless of how many miles are on it). Honda won me over in the 80s. I was shocked at how reliable they were then and how reliable they have been through the 2010s. Last one I owned was a 2012.

The RES in this one appears to be aftermarket. The EX models did not come with that. The issue with the glove box is actually pretty common, there's a plastic latch arm that breaks. These vans are complete beasts. The LX/EX model, unlike their EX-L and Touring counterparts, don't have VCM engines, which means they're far more reliable and have actual VTEC. The VCM engines actually have no form of VTEC. There actually were quite a few changes made through the model years during the 3rd gen. 07-10 models had a new 5 speed transmission brought over from the Ridgeline that is considerably more robust than the one used in the 05-06 models. Not that the older one isn't reliable, but the newer one is just better. And in 08, the models with VCM received a new VCM-2 engine that was more problematic, adding disabling capability to cylinder 4.

Any of the J35 engines that had VCM or VCM-2 could be disabled with VCMTUNER. When this is done, the problems are no longer a concern (unless they have already caused damage). VCM was one of few terrible ideas from Honda. But, like you said, thr LX and EX, luckily, use true VTEC (like they should've stuck with regardless).

@@asmongoldsmouth9839 Even the VCM-3 engines can be disabled with any VCM disable device. Not sure about the brand new VCM-4 engine though. Even if the problems have already caused damage, it's not a big deal as disabling VCM usually allows the engine to self heal and burn off the carbon which restores normal operation outside of worn motor mounts and cats. But even if you disable VCM, that isn't going to get you VTEC back if you own a VCM-1 or VCM-2 engine, and VCM-2 engines have the dreaded front spool valve that you have to watch for, as a leak there will kill your alternator in short order. And disabling VCM doesn't prevent that from leaking. Unfortunately in 2011 VCM became standard equipment on the Odyssey, meaning there's no way out of it. The 05-10 LX/EX Odysseys are pretty much gold. No glass transmission like the 2nd gen and no VCM with a true VTEC engine. Can't beat them and that's also why they're pretty hard to find in the used market in good condition.

Some other info lx-ex model's will have non vcm engines the vcm engines have some minor faults but can buy a module and remedy those and for 07 up got a updated stronger transmission from the Ridgeline also another feature not sure if the lower trim has but if you hold the unlock on fob rolls all the windows down but have to use the key in the door lock to roll them back up

2005-2010. Anything newer is overpriced for what you are getting. The J35 is an engine that has been used in so very many vehicles by Acura and Honda. It is fairly high power output, but keeping it simple as a single overhead cam setup in the vans. This means it is easier to work on (cheaper labor for timing chains or cam/valve work) 😉 I have never had to do heavy work on Honda engines in 30+ years. If you do your oil and ignition component changes regularily, your Honda engine will last for ages.

297,000 on mine & going strong. Just did a 17 hour family road trip Orlando to Maryland. Smooth as butter & surprisingly economical. Mine has the VCM but I've had no real issues. Changed alternator & starter. Oil changes every 5,000 miles. Valve cover gaskets leak....need to replace soon. In 90,000 miles I've done rotors & brakes twice. Also did the water pump & timing belt when I got it @ 212,000. Good power. Transmission still holding up. I did drain & fill twice (no flush) added Lucas additive (Great stuff)

The only minivan with Sto-and-go is the new Chrysler Pacifica. All other minivans have to have the seats manually removed.
