Today I am looking at the first of the "new" Jaguar XKs - a 2006 car, and talking about why it represents excellent value, how I have become obsessed with the wrong things, and if this could become a future classic.

I bought an XK just like this one in May to see me through the pandemic having sold a DB9 in March. At £9500 It is almost unbelievably good value, doing almost everything the Aston did 95% of the time for less than a third of the price. It's so well built it feels almost new, the drivetrain and interior are as tight as a drum, it's just about fast enough for the south of England, cheap insurance, cheap servicing, and it still looks fresh and modern. There is simply no excuse for them being so cheap.

? what have you missed from DB9? Still like the XK?
@andrewmurphy9293
@andrewmurphy9293 Жыл бұрын
@@computerhelpcc Biggest two things I missed from the DB9 were the noise of the V12 and the fact the interior just felt more special. There is also the fact it was an Aston Martin, which matters because I am an unashamed badge snob. I sold the XK after a year, but I tend to do that with most of my cars. It was an excellent ownership experience though and I'm still very happy I bought it. I even sold it for slightly more than I paid!

Great review. I have a 2007 XK, in Coupe form and I love it. In the 3 years I've had it, it's been very reliable, perfect for road trips in the UK and Europe and it still gets admiring comments from people, despite being a 13 year old car. A relatively cheap way to enjoy a V8 whilst we still can.

I have a 2009 XKR Portfolio that I bought when it was 2 years old. It's been nothing but amazing. The only problems were a thermostat - which on mind failed open so there wasn't any issue with overheating. Replaced the battery once. Caution with the 2009 XKR Portfolio, the brakes are $4,000 and last about 40-45K miles. This model has Alcon brakes and they are the best brakes I've ever experienced, but really pricey. I'm keeping this car forever. I've never even been slightly tempted to replace it with an F-Type or any other car. My whole life I always wanted to switch cars after a few years, not with this car, she's a keeper. The body is aluminum, so park if far from anywhere where it might get a door ding. One of my favorite things about it besides the beauty and power (425hp / 419Lb torque) is how it is so fun to slide it a bit in corners. The traction control is just enough, but allows for fun. I have scared myself with it a few times.

Interesting how many car pundits are now singing the praises of the X150. When it was in production they 'bashed' it for: Not having the performance of the 911 Not having the build quality of the SL Not having the looks of the V8 Vantage Not having the cache of the Continental GT Not having the reliability of the SC430 (Lexus) Not having the handling of the Elise...etc. Those of us who actually bought the car and used it knew that whilst it had minor issues - it did everything very very well and has no 'real-world' shortcomings. It's the world's best GT, for reasonable money.

Very nice video, it gives a good insight in what driving an XK entails. I can say, from experience, that a normal aspirated V8 kind off suits the car and provides the smooth driving experience as shown in this video. I currently own an XKR and I have to say that the additional power adds to the attraction, but is not really necessary to be able to enjoy all the benefits of an XK. If you have a strong desire to race opponents at every traffic light or reaching 250 kph on the German autobahn I would certainly recommend the XKR. In any other case a 4.2 litre V8 would suffice. In addition to that, when smoothly driven, the fuel consumption of the 4.2i V8 is not even that bad, quite good actually. The fuel consumption of an XKR is much, much higher. In any case, the ride in an XK, whether it be a normal V8 or supercharged, always gives you that sensation that you are driving something special and is a true joy.

My last day was on a Friday, and on Monday - to celebrate - I bought a (then) 2-year old XK convertible with only 10,000 miles. Today, it has 94,000 miles and with meticulous care, is still new-like inside and out. I will have it until I am a very old man and they take the keys away! Very reliable too! Some folks mistake it for an Aston-Martin, but that doesn't bother me too much :) With the possible exception of the new Ferrari Roma, I think it is the best-looking car made after 2000.

We're a pretty cool bunch? Cheers Jay! Love my X100 coupe, prefer the lines of the coupe to the convertible. With the supercharger whine it never fails to make me grin like an idiot. I like the rumble too, that X150 seems a little muted. Perhaps a convertible should be a little more stately. Thank you for correcting yourself on the engine front. As I understand it they were developing the V8 unit when Ford bought them. Ford looked at the engine, looked at what they had to offer from their stable and decided Jag should stick with what they were designing. The 4.0 had a few teething problems (like the tensioners, bore liners etc) as when developing any new engine, but my 4.2 seems bullet proof (touch wood, lots of wood in the cabin to touch!)

You've pretty much reviewed both of my cars now. The Suzuki Swift Sport some years ago, and now an XK. I have the 2010 convertible with the n/a 5.0 engine and it's all I could need. Other than the obvious extra power and minor styling tweaks, it differs in interior trim (nicer buttons etc), endlessly adjustable seats, and standard active suspension. I'm told the 5.0 cars are notably firmer, but it's still a refined cruiser. I only wish it was a manual; I use it in Sport/Manual all the time, even dawdling around town.

My dad used to own one of these (a coupé, though) for a few years. He bought it as a dealer demo car with a big reduction and it was a lovely car with a surprisingly loud exhaust for a stock car. The thing is: my dad's not a very good driver and the car scared him a few times in the wet, so he got a Discovery 4 next to it as a daily driver. That was the XK's nemesis: if you didn't drive it for 2 weeks, it would drain its 12V battery and all the electronics would go wonky. So he sold it after 2 years and I still miss that car. Even though it was not sporty or particularly roomy, but it just felt like a warm bath on a cold winter's day...

Yessir Especially the XKR it deprecated lovely but within 15-20 year it will go up like a classic. I thing the BMW Z3 or Z4 (aka original roadster) will be a classic around that time too.

I paid 17K USD for an 07 4.2 conv with 36K in excellent condition last year...8 months later I am still watching videos like this - and could not agree more about what people say about this car. I was kid during the 'muscle car" era. This car is as fast (or faster) than most of those. But if you own one you won't drive it that way - you'll cruise. You will marvel at how smooth it is...how precise the shifts are...how comfortable you are. It is an awesome car.

I really struggled to pick between the two when I was shopping, I think the front end of the X100 is stunning, timeless and utterly evocative of the e-type, the X150's muscular rear end appealed to me more than the X100 though and the extra interior space especially sold it to me

Yes, all AJV8 engines were Jaguar designed and engineered before Ford took them over. Cosworth did the heads on the first generation, not sure about this second generation engine. Ford wanted to cut costs and use their Ford units in Jaguar cars but the biggest problem was noise vibration harshness. They couldn't beat AJV8 for smoothness. So the programme continued. The biggest faux pas was using Nikasil cylinder linings, and in markets where the fuel contained excess sulphur, it wrecked engines and they had to be replaced with engines featuring Alusil cylinder linings, under warranty. Before anyone starts wagging their finger, BMW also had the same problem! The second generation units had any problems engineered out it of it, and it turns out these love to munch the miles with no problems. In fact these cars are really very good - the infotainment system is the only thing that causes some major headaches. I can't speak for the roof but as with all cars that offer the option, if you want a simpler life, get the coupe. Forgive me if I'm wrong but weren't all Jaguar engines made on-site at Ford factory at Bridgend at the time, and not Cologne?
@richievpiano
@richievpiano 3 жыл бұрын
1. The Nikasil engine is AND was specifically design [strongly superior] to the steel line design and still is . . . ONLY since the sulfur has been removed from gasoline. Nikasil engines are much hardier than steel liners . . . only in a sulfur free [90%] gasoline environment. . . since year 2000 in USA. Source: [eps.gov]. The USA had a much different gasoline environment than the sulfur stigma's grave issue in the UK. . . until its eventual removal from gasoline in other countries. Sulfur was removed from crud because it had greatly contributed to polluted air. Gasoline is no longer an issue for the Nikasil design. This is rarely mentioned in the world wide forums. 2. Primary and secondary timing non metal chain tensioners in the 1998-2001 years were greatly 'protected' from issues if the oil was kept clean. I am NOT suggesting the tensioners should not be replaced. . . however the point here is that many of these 1998-2000 years are still operating PROBLEM FREE without replaced metal tensioners. My 1999 XK8 engine with 103k miles is noise free and extremely smooth [even on cold startups] in year 2021 with the original parts. I of course do no have any assurance they will last another 50-100k miles. . . but suggest the original parts should not be a deterrent to purchase the 1998-2000 XK8s. . . provided the engine starts and runs noise free and smooth. I understand my suggestions may not be acceptable for many yet are offered to clear up an overstated concern in some instances.

The XK is one of the most beautiful cars ever made and it will DEFINITELY be a future classic. I don't see that happening with XK8 because the styling was too much "90'S". This styling is absolutely timeless... just like Porsche 928 and BMW 8-series (save the pop-up headlights).

xk8 I see it way more of, the design on the xk8 is so simple and clean, the curve under the body and the timeless interior (aside from some of the switches) make it a car thats already appreciating, everyone on the road looks at it satisfyingly, just very nice to the eyes. the xk is a great car but I less prefer the big chunky plastic lights and how the bottom half of the car goes flat down like any other from the time. otherwise x150s are great cars and looking to find one soon.

Love 'em! It's kind of a "not-particularly-revolutionary" shape, an obvious Ian Callum design, or at least heavily influenced by him, but BY GOD I love this shape! Whether it's the earlier XK8/R, the Aston DB7 or any of a multitude of other cars which share these lines, it's probably my favourite "modern" design overall. Only ever driven the 5.0 V8 Supercharged model (poor me!) and that was only for a weekend, and I don't normally go in for that "vibe" but something about driving one of these really makes you feel like a "somebody"!

I've had a 2012 XK Coupe followed by a 2013 XKR convertible. The 5.0L engine was brilliant as was the car. For me the XK was the real successor of the E-Type. The F-Type isn't near as classy as the X100 or 150 have been. I really miss the XKR convertible sometimes, it's a super rare exotic in Germany today.

Having owned a 4.0 XKR, I wondered if the 5.0 V8 made the need for the supercharger irrelevant. I disliked the power-drill sound of the sc. My XKR never ceased to get attention, when I replaced it with a 911, I gained a far better drivers car but still miss that styling as did 100s of strangers.
