I bought a 2006 Commander in 2013. Kept it till late 2014. Had it close to 2 years. Ended up trading it for a FJ Cruiser. I love my FJ. But, I must say, the Commader was AWESOME! I wish I had kept it. I bought it with around 120k, sold it with around 150k. Drove it across the country from Chicago, to San Diego, To Miami, and all in between. During that trip I had my friend, my cousin, myself, 2 dogs, and a cat, plus tons of gear. Tons of space inside (with the 3rd row down), super smooth ride. We took it up some minimal 4wd trails in Colorado (to get up to hot springs). It really was probably my favorite vehicle I have owned (I've owned over 15 vehicles, 5 of which being Jeeps, 2 Subarus, Toyota's, Honda's, etc.). Never had any problems with it in the 30k miles I put on it when it was already old and used. Mine was the base model engine, but, I had leather heated seats and some other options probably (I don't know what, I didn't buy it new; but, the leather seating suggests some upgrades were included, like the power sunroof I had). Even with the base engine, it was plenty fast, pulled 2 jetskis just fine. Really, it was an odd vehicle in some ways, and, I agree, I'd take a 4runner any day. But, the Commander I had, kicked ass!

I was looking for a beater SUV in 2019. I considered the commander. The general consensus at the time is they are typical for Jeep at the time. Reliability is some of the lowest in the industry, but industry average in the early 2000s is way better than past decades. If you find a well kept commander, could be a great deal. Their resale is terrible so market price might be a steal. Im a Toyota fanboy but I won't pretend a 4runner or land cruiser with twice the milage is a better value at twice the price...

These things are notorious for their electrical problems. We had one with the 5.7-liter Hemi. It famously broke down at the entrance to a gas station during hurricane Sandy. Jeep charged us 1200 dollars to replace the wiring harness only to have the problem reoccur. I joined an owner's group just to see if anyone was having similar problems. There were a lot. Apparently, the electronically adjustable seat would slice into the wiring when adjusted shorting out the computer and causing all hell to break loose: Horns, lights, windows, the works. The show would continue 'till the battery died. I warned them about Chrysler products. Unfortunately, nobody listened.

I remember this Jeep, but couldn't remember the model name to save my life. My ex wife's coworker bought one back in the day, but I don't recall seeing one of these in 10 years. In his case, he needed 7 seats, and I guess he wanted 7 grille slots. I probably would have said different in 2006 but I kind of like the upright boxy look now.

I totaled my Scion TC on the back of one of these. They stomped on their brakes and the nose dipped down, I went into the back. Pushed up my hood, bent my radiator brackets, broke a headlight, and bent the fenders. The only damage the Jeep got was I broke the plastic around the trailer hitch when she pulled forward

@@stevenwilliams1805 As a 2007 tC owner, allow me to list all the things I've dealt with, all before 80,000 miles (currently at 105k): - It uses the 2.4L 2AZ-FE engine, which has a widespread oil consumption issue caused by weak piston rings. Toyota issued a recall, but it had an absurdly high minimum threshold of something like 1 quart per 1000 miles to qualify. Mine is affected, but is nowhere near that amount. - The plastic trim surrounding the trunk release is prone to breaking off easily. I'm super careful and have never had a problem, but look around and you'll see lots of tC's with unpainted or duct taped trim pieces on the rear hatch for this reason. - The entire car squeaks and rattles, inside and out. Everything from the sway bar end link bushings creaking when entering driveways, to the clutch slave cylinder, to the air vents/head unit door, to the vinyl sunroof covers, all the way to the rear hatch glass. - While the seats are durable, they're built for Hank Hill. For the bolsters to line up with your body properly, you need gigantic love handles and an ass the size of a grapefruit. Otherwise, your hip bones will be digging into the sides of the seat bottom the entire ride. - The door cards, seats, and steering wheel are made out of some of the most wear resistant materials I've ever seen in a car. However, the rest of the interior is slowly falling apart. Both sun visors are shot and can't stay up anymore and the interior trim for the rear hatch has completely fallen apart. Pretty sure the headliner is made out of paperboard and is held on with velcro. - The entire chassis is really flimsy. You can't really observe it directly, but I'm guessing the center HVAC vent shouldn't start creaking when going around a gentle corner at 40 MPH and the headliner shouldn't make popping noises when pulling into a driveway. - The paint on plastic trim pieces (wing mirrors, door handles, spoiler) all craze and flake off. These parts of the car are too small to wax or otherwise protect properly so there is nothing you can really do to prevent it. - The manual transmission is unpleasant to use and not even reliable. The throttle is laggy and unresponsive (heavy flywheel + emissions controls). The clutch is grabby and chattery when cold, all gear changes are jerky unless you get it _exactly_ right, the clutch is too heavy for a car this size, and the shifter sticks or becomes extra notchy at random for no apparent reason. My transmission also began producing a gritty noise when applying power in 4th and 5th gear after a cross-country move and I'm pretty sure the only solution is a full rebuild since it's probably a bad output bearing deep inside it. Screw that. - This car absolutely chews up front tires. Rotate them religiously and maybe you'll only need a new set every 25,000 miles instead of 10-15,000. Also, all four of my previous set of tires developed slow leaks, but I don't know whether to blame the tire or the rims for that. - The 2007 model year specifically had a common problem where the HVAC panel would no longer illuminate when you turned on the headlights. Thanks to a forum that was aware of this problem, I found out that this is caused by an SMD resistor where one side cracks off the board. A reflow fixed it and it's been going for 9+ years now.

The fact I'm 6'6' and 275lbs it's hard to find a vehicle that fits me...and the commander has lots of headroom and hip room. I bought my '07 commander with 15k miles in '09 and now in 2021 it has 90k miles on it has no oil leaks and everything mechanical and electrical all work perfectly. I've had no issues at all. If you do your scheduled services and don't beat the crap out of it it will be a good vehicle. This vehicle was never meant to go off road the 4 wheel drive is to help on snow covered roads.

My dad had an XJ and we don’t love it like we did that, but we’re still attached to the commander. Also the V6 gets the same mileage, and we’ve used the 3rd row 3 times tops lol (I’m their only kid) Update: thanks for making this video wholesome enough for me to show my mom

So I have one of these in Texas and it has an entirely different personality down here where trucks and off-road are a religion. The commander is a "family" car because it has seven seats, a compromise between the wife that *needs* four kids and the "The only way is the old way" husband. I see them all the time as grocery getters and kid haulers, or like me someone got it because thats all that was left. Its one of those "not really a jeep", jeeps that has 4 wheel and a square body but its too long too heavy to be used off road in any capacity while stock. Mine is a 06 with the 3.7 with an avg of 13mpg city and is on the eve of 130K, in the two years I've had it the engine has been rebuilt, the radiator replaced, cat burned out, and trans is in need of a rebuild/replace. It was a rental before mom got it on discount at the dealer and she drove the wheels off it before selling it to me

was my dream car in high school finally bought one right out of college. People love this car solely for its shape. I often called it a poor mans G wagon. great 4wd when in snow terrain but other than that terrible. Slow, bad gas milage, and cheaply made. the plastic pieces that hold this car together constantly break and chip of with regular use. There is absolutely now reason they should have put the 3rd row in there, would have been much more enjoyable if the 2 row seats were pushed back giving everyone else in the vehicle more room instead of breathing on the back of the front rows neck. awesome looking though can't ever deny that!

Adam N We did get these and IIRC they were almost as much as an LR Discovery 3 or Prado Kakadu. Like over $60k back then. Usually bought by social climbing cashed up bogan families who thought they were too good for a Pajero and thought Jeep was fancy, like an American Land Rover or LandCruiser. How wrong they were. Been years since I’ve seen one, I reckon they all led hard lives in the suburbs and got scrapped when they started breaking down and a lack of parts made them uneconomical to fix

I bought a 2016 Commander Sport "used" with 21 miles on it and ran that for over ten years, 220,000 miles with a couple of hiccups like a radiator replacement, shifter replacement and front end work. I sued it solely for business and in that ten years drove all over creation through everything soft and hard, and past anything but a gas station. It got a decent 17 miles to the gallon on average and the little V6 did adequate work so long as I used the TipTronic shifter correctly and find third gear and hold it there using what torque that 3.7 had at 1750 rpm to get me up hills. It was a smooth highway cruiser and hobby horsed terribly at driveway to road transitions. I liked the long and low windshield that kept he sun off my hands at the wheel and kept the Jeep cooler in the summer. It was a pain at stoplights as I had to lean way forward and look up to see the light when it changed to green. The rear visibility, even with the third row folded down (99.9% of the time) was poor and i used the bumper sensors and the nifty optical gauge in the rear roof to park that thing inches from walls. That Jeep always brought me home every night in all types of weather and got my mother in law to the doctor's office when it was snowing. I even plowed a little with it. It was a great ride and I still miss it.
