I just purchased a used 2009 Honda Civic EX and had no idea about the reset button or even the oil percentage light until I watched this video and I just want to thank you for making it so easy to understand especially for people like me who know nothing about cars! Best video I found so far thank you so much!

Thanks so much for the wonderful reply !! I do truly appreciate it and I read every comment on my channel so thank you so much !! If ever you have a question about your civic you can leave a comment and I’ll always reply. The channel has a wide range of cars but I actually own that civic in the video so there is more to come. @@GarageKing You’re very kind for responding back to me. I am a senior citizen and actually was forced to have to go out and buy a car and as you know this is not exactly the best time to be buying cars with everything going on. I’ve never had the luxury of owning a new car to call my own I’ve always had to take somebody else’s old used car that they were getting rid of and always wound up having to dump so much money into fixing it over the years. The last car I had was a 2002 Mitsubishi gallant with well over 300,000 miles on it I don’t even know how it held together all those years. I did the best I could but over the years I put so much money into keeping it running that it just wasn’t worth it anymore it literally fell apart right underneath me and so I was forced to go out and find a car. I remembered somebody telling me to stick with Honda or Toyota and so with only $8000 to my name the pickings were slim and I wound up at a Honda dealership. I had two choices both of them were Honda civics one was a two door coupe and one was the one I have now the 2009 Honda EX with 136,000 miles on it so I knew that I would be inheriting somebody else’s problems because those Carfax reports, well I don’t trust them. Well I was right, when I took it to my mechanic it needed over $1500 worth of work done on it but hopefully now I’ll be able to drive a car and not be afraid to travel more than 10 minutes out of my neighborhood. I know it might seem crazy to you but I haven’t been able to travel anywhere more than 10 to 15 minutes out of my immediate area for the last 5 years because the car was so dangerous to drive, and now just the thought of being able to get into a car and not have to think about breaking down is an exciting thing for me. So hopefully when I have some car questions I’ll be able to turn to you and maybe you can guide me with your advice. Thank you again for your kindness and your willingness to answer my questions. God bless you.
@GarageKing3 жыл бұрын
@@Navygrl58 Wow you have been through a lot !!! I think the Honda is a good choice, and 136,000 miles is not a lot for one of these Civic's as they seem to go for quite some time. About me, I am a fully licensed mechanic, and I really like doing these videos as I know there a lot of people out there who need help. Some people don't do the work themselves, but just like watching the videos so they can learn, and if they have to take their car into a mechanic, they actually know what's involved in a certain job. Its too bad you could not previously travel more, but it seems you have some freedom now :) If you ever have any questions just reach out on any video and I'll be sure to respond to you. Its Friday today so enjoy your weekend :)

Thank you my dear!!!!!!! Most people don't know how to reset the oil light and they watch for that. It's not a hard job to change oil, and on a Honda Civic its pretty cheap, but on some of the European cars its like 200 bucks here in the Toronto area!!!! Mind you the oil cost more of those, but its still pricey. Great to hear from you, I hope all is well with you :)

Thanks so much this is so helpful! Can I ask how much oil do I need when refilling to avoid overpouring? And how do I know how much to add when topping up - is there a way of knowing how many litres does it take to get the level from the bottom of the dipstick's crosshatched area to the top? Thanks again and sorry if it's a silly question! x)
@GarageKing3 жыл бұрын
Never a silly question with me!!!!!! The amount to put in varies depending on how much drains out. If you engine is really hot more will come out, compared to a cold engine. What I do with these Honda's is after the oil change I put in about 4-4.5L then I start it, let it run for about 30 seconds, then shut off and check dipstick. It will be low but touching the dipstick, then I pour in about a cup and check the dipstick and repeat. Once you are near the top of the dipstick it's not much. Generally these civics take about a full jug (4.73L) + a little sometimes. Remember no question is a silly question :) Have a great day :)

I have run full synthetic 5W-20 in my 2006 Civic since it was new; I have 238,000 miles on it now and it is still a very tight engine. I tried 0W-20 a couple of winters back - I don't recommend it. No benefit, and it developed a minor oil leak. Switched back to 5W-20 and the leak is mostly gone. I'm going to switch to 10,000 miles between changes (with appropriate oil) next, and see how that goes.
@GarageKing7 ай бұрын
I got my Civic a few years old, but bought it from the neighbour who had it since new, and I have done all the services on it. It's got about the same mileage as yours and its still running great !! @GarageKing2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. If you are in the middle you are completely fine !!! The reason I always fill to the top is some engines use some oil, so then they wind up being low before the next oil change is due. If yours does not burn any oil you are good !!!

my oil life is going kind of fast. I'm a bit confused though because if I follow the mileage sticker that Jiffy Lube wrote I needed an oil change at, it should be that I can drive it many miles longer. Would the oil life percentage going down mean maybe I just need to add oil but not necessarily go through the process of getting an oil change just yet? Also, how many gallons/liters do I typically need to add? Also is it dangerous if I add a bit too much by accident?
@GarageKing3 ай бұрын
Hello, your vehicle should not use much oil, a little is normal on some cars. When you say the oil life is going fast I hope you are not meaning the amount on the dipstick is reducing, that should not happen. Your oil just keeps getting dirtier, but the amount remains the same. You only need about 4-5L including the filter to do the job.
@willow-wf3jf3 ай бұрын
@@GarageKing Thank you for your reply. I didn't look at the dip stick yet. I just mean the percentage on the dashboard. It's down to 30% or something. But the mileage that Jiffy Lube wrote i think is much higher, so if I follow the percentage indicator on the dashboard and get an oil change, I'll be take it in a lot sooner than Jiffy recommended.

this r18a engine , when the engine is cold and when you check the oil , it is overfilled. when you start it like 30 seconds then check the oil, the oil level will go down. So which is the correct reading?
@GarageKing Жыл бұрын
If you change the oil filter and you should, after you put oil in, run it for 30 to 60 seconds, then wait a min and check the oil as it will drain back down, then after that you can add as needed bit by bit and check. If you are not changing the oil at all and just want to check the level you can just check when the engine is cold, it should not be overfull.
@victorchiong5239 Жыл бұрын
@@GarageKing I did change the filter. Thank you for the fast reply. I will check it cold tomorrow. :)

Anytime, and you know once your engine is at operating temp (temp gauge in the middle) the oil is really thin almost like water so when you shut the car off, just wait a minute and then check. So after driving home from work you could shut off the car, then just wait a min and check and you would be fine. Have a good day :)

What set off the 15% life message? Is it strictly counting miles or a sensor analyzing oil quality?
@GarageKing3 жыл бұрын
Hey Brother, sorry for the late reply, just got your message now. The computer uses a combination of drive cycles, with mileage, and how long the vehicle is driven. The first ones years ago were mainly set to come on when you reached a certain mileage. These newer ones take a lot of things into consideration. On the Honda its a combination of things, so it will vary between each car and how its driven :)
@WuNoah3 жыл бұрын
I just purchase a used 2010 Honda. I’ve put 3100 miles on it over 5 months but the oil life indicator on the dash is still at 70%. I checked it using the dipstick and level and color looked fine. Is it ok to keep driving until the oil life indicator drops to around 25% or so?
@GarageKing3 жыл бұрын
You bet, as long as the light was reset at the last oil change. Its not uncommon for these newer cars to run 10K between changes :) Thanks for the comment and enjoy your long weekend :)

What amaount of oil dis You put in?
@GarageKing2 жыл бұрын
Hey there, if I remember correctly I put in about 4L and then start, run engine until oil light goes off, stop engine, wait a min and then top off as needed. I don’t remember exactly how much. I always like putting in less, then run and top off. The reason is the oil amount you put in will vary with the temperature of the engine when you do the oil change. If you drain the oil when hot you get a better drain and put more in to fill. If the engine is cold not as much comes out and it requires less to fill. I have used this method for years.

People start FILLING your filters first, unless there side ways fill them up, less time for the engine oil to start circulating, if not it has to fill the filter up first.
@GarageKing3 жыл бұрын
Good point, especially on the larger filters. The Honda takes such a small filter that it fills pretty quickly, just a fraction of a second. Plus when you do an oil change the engine has been running already so there is oil everywhere. It’s not really like a dry start that you get in the morning, but it is better to fill the filter. Thanks:)
