2006 Yamaha kodiak 450 test drive and review

Just picked up a 2005 Kodiak 450 a few weeks ago for a great deal, in great condition, with only 1046 original miles!!! Well maintained and garage kept. I'm thrilled with it! I feel 15yrs old again when I rode my 4Wheeler literally every single day after school. Reliving the glory days!! Lol Love the content. Wholesome stuff dude.

@rockspowersports Being 45 now I wanted something a bit smaller. Had a Grizzly few years ago. Was an amazing machine and it's still going strong with it's new owner. Thanks again for your videos. Major nostalgia.

Sometimes the smaller machines are more fun than the bigger ones. Those kodiaks are a little lower so more stable and easier to maneuver around. Glad you enjoy the video’s.

Low center of gravity is the reason why I love my little Suzuki king quad 300 4x4 plus the low gearing I only wish it had more power!

Its a perfect 1 man go anywhere bike (quad I guess, I dont say that though). 4wd, diff lock, independent, disc brakes, enough power to get you through stuff. Its not winning any races, but thats not what this comment is about. Throw some aftermarket rims on to give a hair more offset and with its low center of gravity, it will handle nearly anything. I've got an 07 Grizzly 350 I got a year and a half ago for the kids. Great machine, only downside is no Hi/Low. The 450 has that, and its a difference maker. I've got an 02 Grizzly 660 I bought in July 01, and a 21 Grizzly 700 and everyone's favorite is still the 07 Grizzly 350. The 450 would be perfect for my tastes. Just handles trails so well. Totaly stable, of course my 350 has the rims/tires that came stock on my 700 so it did push the offset out a bit. A new 2021 Kodiak 450 with power steering would be ideal. I almost wish I hadn't bought the Grizzly 700 at this point. Yes its so much faster, but I'm past that at this point in life.

@Andy Bassham your right these kodiak 450’s are great machine that can do it all! I haven’t drove the new kodiak 450 with power steering but I bet that thing is even better! Sounds like you have a nice collection of grizzly’s.

For a utilitarian work machine these are very handy, I don’t think they’ve built another machine that competes with these in a CVT, they’re well optioned for being the mid sized option.

Nice video, are they reliable and something with 11000 km, would that high mileage be ok, doesn't smoke, sounds good, between this and a can am renegade 800 with 3300km, but double the price of kodiak, i saw both reviews any suggestions, did feel the renegade to be bulkier and a lot heavier so for mud trails you actually need something light and powerful, not sure about the torque on the 450, what's your take, i also dont want to waste money on repairs or a quad that's gonna get stuck in the bush

The Yamaha will be more reliable, I’ve seen many of the 450’s with over 10,000 miles and still run like new. The 450’s have good bottom end power but if your planning on using big tires you might need a clutch kit. The renegade 800 will have way more power and will be a lot of fun but it will be more expensive to fix and maintain.

I’ve never owned an ATV and the Kodiak seems like a great ATV for hunting and exploring. Do you know what a fair price be for a used 2006 Kodiak 450 with about 300 miles in very condition from the original owner? Thanks for the video!

@Arch Stanton The kodiaks are great atvs and I sold this wheeler for $3100. The one your looking at with only 300 miles should be worth more. In todays market I’d say that one would be around $4000-$4500 in my area anyways.

@@archstanton9703 Yes that’s the only problem right now is most dealerships don’t have much in stock. You may be able to put a deposit on a machine from the dealership for one they have scheduled to come in.

For some reason my 05 450 grizzly only goes 29 mph, I think its something wrong with the clutching. Maybe the belt is worn is that possible? Its got 1,500 mi and 6,300 Hours on it. Do you have any ideas?

@teslame are It should be able to go faster than that.. The clutching could definitely affect your speed. These Yamaha’s have a greased clutch and the grease can become contaminated with water or mud causing the clutch to not open up all the way. Your machines had a lot of hours vs miles so I’m guessing it’s been a lot of slow riding possibly from plowing. When you don’t open up the machine very much the clutch grease can dry out and the clutch won’t open properly. The first thing I would do is tear apart the primary clutch, clean and re grease with new Yamahalube ultramatic grease.

There is a throttle limiter on the front of the thumb throttle assembly, the little screw with a lock nut.
