Nice work Boss, I was going to start this today and decided I'd rather take a whole day and a couple right tools for todays systems. Last time I did drums was 78' we didn't use anything but pliers a screwdrivers and wooden mallets and I love working on my own truck. Thanks for the help. Your a good dude. Peace.

I just finished up on my ‘06 Silverado, and learned one valuable lesson learned that I hope Chevy drum brake diy’ers will find useful. Another option for removing a drum that will not allow itself to release despite several good methods for doing so: cut the drum in two. Takes only about 10 minutes with an inexpensive elec grinder and metal cutting wheel. One side took me about 3 hours to remove without cutting the drum, destroying the wheel cylinder and my knuckles in the process. I cut the other drum in two, and it took took about 30 mins total, including replacing the wheel cylinder and attaching the parking brake cable. If your pickup is your only ride, make sure you have new drums, shoes, springs and adjusters, brake fluid, and tools on hand before you start. Parts are amazingly cheap via the web. Quite a few shops seem to use Napa, so that’s another option. Details are key with getting it done right tht first time, so don’t rush.

Helpful vid bud. I am about to do this job on a 2013 1500 LT. I believe Chevy changed the design slightly because when I reference my specs and VIN it doesn't look like this..... 2 large springs on top as opposed to the one you show here. One small spring on the bottom compared to the large U-shape line you removed. And finally each shoe is held onto the backing plate by a pins and a twist spring. Can you (or anyone) confirm before I order the parts? I don't want to pull off the wheels to only find I ordered the wrong items.
@oscars-autorepair32366 жыл бұрын
Diesel Mike I can confirm that you are correct. Your 2013 Silverado is much easier to change the rear brake shoes.

Good to see this done on one of these earlier new vehicles, the single spring design, the E-brake cable connection (what an awful design huh?). I would suggest a greater level of cleanliness. I always do the cleaning/disassembly then clean myself and get new gloves so as not to contaminate the brake linings. Also, you need a camera person! Thanks for the video though, convinced me not to waste money on new adjusters. However, I am a firm believer in new wheel cylinders anytime new shoes are needed. Hate to blow one out with fresh shoes and then you're back to square one. Also, the parts catalogs are hazy about exactly what kind of hold down parts and springs are needed, this clarified it some. The adjusters are the same thread they just reverse positions? The wheel cylinders seem to be universal? Thanks for the content, hope you take my criticisms constructively.

You could make it easier on yourself by not using a screwdriver, remove the right side of the spring first, pull the shoe back a bit and remove the adjuster. Then do the left side and remove the spring. A good pair of hose clamp pliers works better and safer to remove that big spring. Don't use "anti-seize" on the adjuster either. Use a small amount of grease. Your right parking brake cable appeared to be in the condition that it should be replaced. There is no need for "anti-seize" to be used in a brake job. A light coating of silicone grease works best but before you put grease on the backing plate install the brake shoe on the spring as you have less chance of getting grease all over. When you go back together with the shoes, put the right one on first about half way and have the big spring hold it in place. Put the left one on and have the spring hold it in place and then put the adjuster in. Then finish putting the spring in the holes. Believe me, I've done alot of these and it's much smoother. You got the job done but twice the effort. lol With all that said, this is the worst brake design GM ever made! I've done alot of brakes in my old life. lol Enjoy doing the next brake job. :-)
@44hawk28 Жыл бұрын
You don't put anti seize inside that brake system, you use brake Lube on those contact points. And the best one you can get is the CRC red and white jar from AutoZone. I still have one of those that I bought in 2005, a little bit goes a long long way. I even use it on contact surfaces on my firearms. Works wonderfully. Better than the straight silicone brake Lube by far. The only place for anti seize on that job is on the Hub face and the lug studs.
