It's actually an interesting (if sad) read if one cares to research. Apparently, a RM Major was relieved of command, a request for additional troops from London was refused, troop training was deemed inadequate by subsequent inquiry and was based on peacekeeping rather than traditional attack strategies.
@Memyselfanddave27242 ай бұрын
As someone who was actually in Zulu Company on H5, the OC WAS relieved of command as he was a useless coward under fire, but we were not under trained to fight. We’d been in country conducting ops for a long time before that event. The only limiting factor we had was the abysmal company commander

This is one of the best battle sims I've seen you guys do in a long time. The artillery barrage with the building debris blasting up high in the air was great. I know how difficult it is to put these together every day and it is very much appreciated. I think DCS does an excellent job of simulating exploding vehicles and planes from a bit more distance that is usually shown. The Tomcat battle the other day was cool but following an AA missle all the way into the side of the fuselage isn't as great a visual as watching the target explode from a quarter mile away. Not a criticism, just a suggestion. Keep Reaping!

Legend has it that they could only take four Royal Marines because their huge stainless steel balls would have put the airframe overweight if they had taken more.

Really good to see this mission played out after reading it from one of the pilots (Ed Macy) and the controversy of whether the Apache should have been used for this.

My understanding from reading a number of different books is British Apaches used a circling wagon wheel formation when providing CAS with the cannon, don’t believe you’d of had them static in the hover like this.

The soldier wasnt noticed as missing as he had the same surname as someone else in the company. I guess easy to do in the confusion of battle with 4 WIA. Shitty situation but they pulled it off. And a hell of a coincidence since I just finished re-reading Apache this afternoon.

One thing that crops up again and again in the history of the British armed forces - we are so much better at failing in style than everyone else. This mission, which turned into a bit of a fustercluck, is a good example. The most heroic rescue imaginable ended up with the commando being rescued not surviving. The Charge of the Light Brigade is a very obvious example. The English Armada, that went to raid Spain the year after the Spanish Armada failed to achieve much in its attempt to invade Britain. Operation Market Garden in 1944, the so-called bridge too far. The role of the Gloucestershire Regiment in the Battle of the Imjin River in Korea. And, I'm sure, dozens of other events that I can't quite call to mind right now.

The British harrier regularly flew with 1000lb bombs. Rockets and 1000lb bombs seems to be ther default loadout in Afghanistan. Surprisingly they often didn't have cannons(based on Harrier How to be a fighter pilot, and Hazard Spectrum)

There were 4 apache's on task for this, 2 were on mission and 2 others were sent as qrf. They were all armed with 30mm, 4 helfire and rockets Inc flechette. The 2 on mission were the ones that went in whilst the 2 QRF covered, one of them was a female pilot in the gunner seat whom went code Winchester within a few minutes of arriving on scene. Also one of the rescue apache's landed after running on fumes and the way the refuel points were set up meant they had to taxi in, turn 180 and back into them. Well WO1 R didn't have time for that so piled in got as close as he could to the fuel line and told the ground crew to get refueling ASAP! Twas a busy day

I don't think the front of the engines would have caused too much discomfort, but the rotor wash would be intense. I'm not familiar with the Apaches, but the Cobra's engines don't generate a ton of suction. I talked with a flight line mechanic who said he haphazardly sat an adjustable wrench in the intake cowling while the engine was running, and it just sat there. Obviously, it's a huge FOD issue, and I don't recommend doing that.
@mk63152 ай бұрын
The rotor wash might have been bearable in the desert heat, but I think it might be more intense near the tips of the blades
@KH990j2 ай бұрын
@mk6315 Yes, generally the wash is worse towards the tips, but you'll still get plenty towards the middle.

Sorry to ask this for this video and if it was already asked, but since the AIM-174B SM-6 was typically used to shoot down other missiles, could it be used in a defensive anti-missle role when launched from the air? For example, if someone tries to snipe an AWACS, could a defending F-15 shoot down the incoming missile, saving the AWACS?
