2007 Dodge Durango Hesitation During Acceleration - Throttle Body

My 2007 Dodge Durango has been acting up lately where it will hesitate and then surge during moderate acceleration from a standstill or low speed. I did some research on how to fix such a problem and one option is to make sure the throttle body is clean. This video discusses how to remove the air intake plenum and clean the throttle body.
ADDITION: I have since learned that some vehicles have a special coating on the butterfly valve of the throttle body. I researched it and I can't determine if this vehicle has a "coated" throttle body or not. I used carb cleaner in this video which apparently will remove the protective coating. An auto parts store should sell special throttle body cleaner which is supposed to be safe for the coating. I would recommend using that cleaner instead of carb cleaner just in case this throttle body is coated. If anyone knows for sure if this unit is coated, please speak up.

On my 2006 Durango with the 4.7l V8 the engine would rev from 500 to 1000 RPM at idle. The engine also shut off three times while towing our small boat up an incline. I took it to the local dealer when I got home and they didn't know what was causing it to do either of the things I just mentioned. I did a search on KZbin and found other people had issues and to fix it they changed the throttle body sensor. I did the same and haven't had an issue since them. Idles smooth and didn't shut off while towing our camper this summer. I think it came offset me about $30 for the part and like 10 minutes to change it out.

I have a 07 durango Flex fuel. My fan clutch is brand new and is running high and loud. Once the RPM gets to 2000 it sticks a little. Feels like I've lost power as well. Especially going up a hill. I have changed the Throttle position Sensor and it continues doing the same.. Should I change the IAC Idle AiR Control Valve next? Maybe give a good cleaning to the whole throttle body? I have also heard the the PCV valve hose may have a air leak? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

It looked like you was missing the orange factory seal/gasket that goes onto the front of your throttle body and seals the throttle body with the intake plenum box that slides over the throttle body.

I noticed on your dash that the TPMS light was on, do you have that system on your Durango? I have an 06 Limited, no TPMS system but the light came on after a battery change a few years ago. I know its not the battery as I changed it a few times over the life and my Durango never had the TPMS option. I read around a forum that there are many owners with the same.

i do have the tpms. the light was on at the time because one of the sensors had a dead battery. i have since replaced the sensor and the light is off. not sure why the light would come on if you dont have the sensors.

I had this same problem on my 2004 Durango 5.7 hemi I thought It was my throttle body and even my transmission even though I had an intake leak. Then one morning I started my truck and it just shut off and didn't start anymore, it just cranked and cranked. Found out it was my fuel pump now it runs great and I can floor it without thinking twice. I posted a short video to replace without removing the tank

MrKickurshin Hi, I don't know for sure what the problem was, but doing what I did in this video got rid of the problem. It ran smooth for about 7 months and now I sense that it is starting to happen again. I did clean the TB sensor in this video so perhaps as others have stated below it might be the TB sensor.

@@birkato when i hit the gas slowly its fine if i stop on the gas like im at a stop and turn onto the highway the truck roars then throws its self into 2nd gear and starts to go but in first gear the truck does not want to be driven hard im not sure why

@@birkato it only happens when im like jumping out onto a main road and punch the gas the truck gets loud the rpm spikes and the truck just idles in mid go then it throws its self into 2nd gear and takes off

@@TheVacuumWizard I dont suppose you are leaking any transmission fluid are you? It is worth checking your tranny fluid level to rule that out as shifting problems can sometimes be the result of too much or too little transmission fluid.

Mine does the same, water is running off of the windshield and into the throttle body. There’s water getting into the tps and throttle body. It will eventually ruin the tps, also the valley of the motor under the intake can fill up and may damage the knock sensor. I’m gonna fabricate a shield over the throttle body to divert the water down the back of the engine. I’ve had to replace the tps 3 times and the knock sensor once.

I have a 04 4.7 Dodge Durango I notice when I’m at a stop light and I accelerate on the gas I hear a clucking sound from under neath do anybody knows what it is I need help..

I have several "clunks" coming from my Durango. I would get under the vehicle and grab each sway bar link and try to move it...there should be no play. Also look at the front CV joints and make sure they are not leaking with excessive play. It could also be a knuckle/control arm or other suspension piece. Also check the front sway bar bushings to make sure they are in good shape and there is no slop. I suppose it could also be something in the drive train, transfer case, or front/rear differentials but that is probably less likely. If you have more than 100,000 miles and have never changed your sway bar links, I would suspect them first. Hope you figure it out.

I been told that opening the butterfly manually is not a good idea for u could ruin them sensors inside!? If u can get a helper or a stick to depress gas pedal after key is turned to on position (not running) is a safer way to open your throttle body valve! Just what I keep hearing and reading. I would be interested to hear from someone how moving the butterfly manually (with the ignition off) could damage the sensors. I can't think of how this could happen. I think it would be bad idea to move the valve with the ignition on; the motor that actuates the plate is usually a DC stepper motor which will be energized with the ignition on...you wouldn't want to force it open in that case. Your suggestion with the helper might work but I wouldn't trust someone to keep the pedal in the correct position as I have my hands in the throttle body, one wrong move and you could really hurt a finger! I suggest you put light pressure on it with the ignition off and if it moves with smooth resistance, it is probably OK. Mine felt like it was just spring loaded. Also, I probably should have used "sensor safe" cleaner; I didn't actually spray cleaner on the sensor but better safe than sorry. From more reading, some people have cut their fingers pretty bad in the event that it snaps shut on a finger so do this at your own risk and be careful!

@@birkato If you press down the gas pedal with the ignition on the ON POSITION it usually on most vehicles opens the throttle body butterfly! Rather then just fingering it open! Its Like towing a vehicle on its drive wheels rolling in neutral! Transmission is supposed to do its job creating the load outwards! Just like I believe is the tps sensor in such throttle body- it works from internally outward! Does that make any sense? Kinda Hard to explain but I'm just sharing things I keep reading up on a lot here! Could definitely be just a theory idk honestly!!

I just use a fuel system cleaner to help aid for these type of problems.

Thanks for the suggestion. Fuel system cleaner may help with hesitation due to fuel injector issues but if the issue is with the throttle body or mass air flow sensor, then fuel system cleaner will not work because fuel is not introduced until after the throttle body.

I get about 11 or 12 miles per gallon city and maybe 18 highway without towing anything. I think I could get 20 or 21 mpg if I keep the speed down to 55 mph. I will get about 14 or 15 mpg towing a small trailer on the highway.

No, definitely not engine replacement. It was just a dirty intake sensor. Has not happened again since I cleaned it.
