My son has a 2005 Durango 4.7 and I battled an overheating problem for months. The front air deflector was missing a large piece so I replaced it and that wasn't it. It turned out to be that radiator, large crack on the front upper side of the tank adjacent to the upper hose. Replaced the rad, hoses, thermo, clamps and new coolant. She is a happy truck now.

Also check if there is air in the system. Take that allan bolt on the top hose out and radiator cap off. Run the truck until no air bubbles come out of where that Allan bolt was. If there is air I. The coolant system it will keep the coolant from circulating properly

I had the same problem with my 04 Durango. Started with the three steps you did, then changed the coolant temp sensor. Still had problems on hot summer days, so I swapped out the Radiator. Single core radiator in these 4.7's is vastly undersized. So, bigger radiator, and largest clutch fan I could find (I believe a heavy duty for a 5.7 Hemi) and no problems at all. That was almost two years ago.

Great video brother. We have and 06 5.7 and it started over heating when were going on a long trip. I initially thought it was the thermostat and had it changed on the way. The problem continued and we turned back. I went to my regular mechanic and he changed the fan clutch. It is a common problem with this model.

been through exactly this and was even advised new fan clutch. ended up the new thermostat was faulty. it's HUGE to clear all air in the system. this I found to be the major issue and took several times to get it done.

Well, changed my thermostat, nope. Burped it as best I could, nope. Installed a new coolant temp sensor, nope. Now it's either the clutch fan or the radiator, lol. My boss has the same engine in his Dakota (mine is a Durango), with 110,000 miles (I have only 108,000). He had the same issues. Installed a new thermostat and nothing. Then he bought a new radiator from 1800radiator and installed it himself ($159) and has had no issues since.

Yeah follow-up here almost a year after my last reply. (WARNING! Novel follows!) Didn't solve the issue for months, but then started getting a cylinder #4 misfire code being thrown each morning after cranking up and pulling out for work. Changed all the spark plugs and noticed old #4 plug did look more worn than the other 7. AND I checked the coil packs with a meter to make sure they were in spec and when I replaced them, swapped #4 pack for #1. Misfire disappeared for 3 weeks but then came back on same #4 cylinder. Removed #4's fuel injector and noticed although it was in spec when checked with a meter, it did have a crack in the plastic housing (which I have read is common and not always a sign of a malfunctioning injector), but I replaced it with a brand new one anyway. Misfire returned in less than 2 days on same cylinder #4. After reading online about the big plastic cowl between the windshield and hood being defective (bad seal and water routing) I decided maybe I had water getting into the plug wells affecting the packs and plugs. (There was noticeable rust and some slight moisture when I removed packs and changed plugs.) So I went and ordered a $140 redesigned cowl from the local Dodge dealership. (Talked them down to $120 since I told them I could get it online for that.) Although it looks much better (old one had a badly damaged seal and a crack where a bolt was), and it has a larger seal and SLIGHTLY redesigned routing for excess water, there is STILL water ending up running on top of my engine and over the intake and towards plug wells. Way to go Dodge! They even have new seals on any coil packs you buy from them to address the water getting into wells problem (this is in addition to the normal O-Rings). But I digress. Getting back to my overheating issue. After considering buying an entire new set of coil packs online from a different manufacturer which include the new additional seals for only about $70 for all 8 (Autozone charges about $40 per coil pack, and I don't even want to know the cost of a pack from Dodge!), and new RECOMMENDED original model Champion plugs (yep, I went cheap and got Autolites, which were same as I installed 50,000 miles ago with zero obvious issues), I decided to park my Durango while we vacationed at the beach and tackle those replacements, AND go ahead and spring for that $159 radiator from 1800radiator my boss told me about a year ago, upon our return from vacation. Got back, replaced the radiator first with new hoses after a complete flush and removal of old rad and hoses. Refilled with 50/50 and burped the system. For the first time in 3 years since I let a local auto repair shop flush my radiator I once again was seeing the temp gauge stay below 1/2 the whole time! I couldn't make it overheat! New radiator was just the trick! ... Fast forward 2 weeks ... came home from work thinking about ordering the new coil packs and plugs to again chase the misfire since cooling was once right again, and as I am parking, I notice my temp gauge climbing slowly. I sit there idling as it goes up, up to about 3/4. What??? Get out and start troubleshooting. No apparent coolant loss, no leaks, clutch fan is acting right, coolant is flowing. What the heck? Notice there is a very small splatter of coolant on the air filter box which appears like it spewed from the radiator cap. Pressure release? Maybe the cap is bad since it's 12 years old. Buy new one with pressure release valve. Overheating issue remains although only a problem on longer drives or while idling for a bit. Over the next day or so I continue to try to solve the issue. Start noticing in the mornings when I first crank up I get some smoke from tailpipe for 1-2 minutes. Condensation? No apparent coolant loss yet? Then over next week smoke takes longer to dissipate (5-6 minutes after cold start), cooling system seems to be losing SLIGHT amount every 2 days or so, cooling system pressure seems really high (upper hose hard as a rock!), and continue to have a misfire (assuming cylinder #4, stopped scanning & resetting the darned thing!). Finally break down and borrow a block tester from AutoZone under their loaner tool program. (Chemical test that changes from Blue to Yellow when gases from radiator are drawn in confirming combustion gases getting into cooling system, AKA BLOWN HEAD GASKET, warped head, cracked head/block, etc.). Watch as chemical changes to something resembling a urine sample. Oh JOY! NOT! Seems the 3 years I dealt with the engine slightly overheating on hot days or on longer than 30 mile drives must have taken it's toll, probably before I got the new radiator installed. So I go to a mechanic prepared to pay $1200-1600 or more for the heads being removed, shaved, and replaced along with a new gasket just to have him tell me I should go buy some Blue Devil Head Gasket Sealant for about $65 since the Durango is still running fairly well. I'm like he's actually turning down the job and recommending the stuff so many people claim will clog up your rad, heater core, etc.? He said it usually works. Same thing the AutoZone kid told me. Says every bottle he has sold has fixed the car the customer had with zero complaints. And it comes with a money back guarantee. Kid said come back for a full refund if it doesn't work. So as I type this I am staring at some antifreeze, a $65 bottle of Blue Devil, a kit to bypass my heater core (just in case it could clog it up, as per recommendation from previous happy users of the product), and a new thermostat, since the bottle actually says to REMOVE the thermostat before the process and install a NEW one afterwards. So basically figure that into the cost along with antifreeze, (and chemical flush if you follow their instructions to the letter), since draining of everything, flushing, and refilling with water then adding the product, is required before installing the new thermostat afterwards and refilling with 50/50, as well. As Rocky told Adrian, "Wish me luck, I'm gonna need it."

@TortureBot
@TortureBot 8 жыл бұрын
+heyitschinoable I finished using the Blue Devil product Tuesday afternoon and let the Durango sit for a day. I have been driving it since Wednesday to and from work with no apparent problems. It has not overheated at all and the coolant level is staying where it is. I have not seen one bit of white smoke since the process and the check engine light turned itself off within 2 days (from a cylinder #4 misfire). It is Sunday now and I have put about 170 miles on it and it's holding strong so far. Knock on wood!

@TortureBot
@TortureBot 8 жыл бұрын
+heyitschinoable mine ran great from 2004 to about 2013 when I let a local auto repair place do a flush of the radiator. Whatever they did clogged my radiator so bad that I could no longer depend on it to go on long trips and even on hot days it would try to overheat some. I definitely think the new radiator cured the overheating problems when I installed it, but I believe the few times that it had overheated damaged the head gasket and that's why a couple of weeks after replacing the radiator I needed to use the Blue Devil. It may be likely that the flow of coolant increased so much with a new radiator that it caused the gasket to leak worse and started making the problem with the white smoke and loss of coolant more noticeable. I do believe that the coolant was leaking before the new radiator but since the coolant flow was not as good it was simply causing a misfire at first. I will reply to this again in the future and tell you if the Blue Devil is still lasting.

After a pressure check on mine, it turned out that the two hoses going into the heater block were leaking since they are crimped in place and over time (and rough country roads) the crimps loosen up.

Thank you. My 2004 overheats when I go up steep hills on hot days. Other times it drives fine. Problem started after an air filter was changed during oil change. Maybe not related but it is stuck in my head now. Until I can afford to get it fixed I turn the heater on high going up the hill and that stops it from overheating. But after the heater is off I can hear the fan run for just a short while then turn off. So I think the problem is with the thermostat or fan.

On mine as we speak I'm repairing it the auxiliary water pump that controls the rear heat on mine dunno if u have that luxury but if you do check that out it will mess up your engine if it's spluring out antifreeze or if it's leaking in general and also check the hoses underneath the passenger wheel might have to take off the black cover but that's usually the problems with dodge durangos

The hilarious thing is, I don't have rear heat but the same electric pump is on my model, a 2004 with a 4.7 and the pump is used to help circulate coolant through the front heater core at low RPMs. Mine has a very small drip that forms sometimes but it's not losing any noticeable coolant. I think the seals are gone in it and I will eventually replace it but it is $150 from the dealer but you can find it on eBay sometimes for about $90-$100. I have heard you can bypass it completely but the coolant flow through the heater core will not be like it should and your heat will not get very hot.

Most vehicles should have the temperature gauge reading just slightly under half way on the gauge most of the time. Unless it is a extremely hot day or you have low coolant or some other problem it shouldn't really ever get past halfway. An efficiently operating vehicle will probably keep it no more than three eighths up the gauge.
