These days the regular 5.0L Coyote produces 500HP and 418lb-ft, while the naturally-aspirated 5.4L V8 in the Mustang GT3 produces over 600HP and 480lb-ft of torque, and both get better fuel economy than the supercharged 5.4L in this GT500. Anyone who thinks combustion engines have "stagnated" or "can't be improved" hasn't been keeping track of how far things have come since even the 2000s.

The “regular” 5L Coyote doesn’t make 500. To get that number, one has to track-down and overpay for one of the scarce “Dark Horse” units. Even so, the 5.4 blower motor had a LOT more beef under the curve, and average power across its usable rev-range. Peak HP figure doesn’t tell the whole story.

That's because in 2005 Ford decided to model their cars after the old school muscle cars. Because the 05-09 Mustang sold so well it's the reason Chevy started producing the Camaro again in 2010, and Dodge the Challenger in 2008. We owe a lot to the 05-09 Mustang

@@theoddfurry141 Not sure what inflation calculator you're using but they all seem to grossly underestimate the actual inflation rate. Here's a better way to calculate it. Average new car price in 2007 = around $24,000. Average new car price today = around $48,000. That's a ratio of 2:1. So all you need to do is double the price of any new car in 2007 to know what it would cost in today's money. So for this Shelby GT500, the coupe would be $84,000 in today's money. A 2022 GT500's original MSRP was $81,000 (excluding markups) - so the math checks out. A 2007 Dodge Charger SRT8 cost $38,000 (or $76,000 in today's money). Right in line with what a 2023 Charger SRT Hellcat costs.
@ragingbull94mtx
@ragingbull94mtx 11 ай бұрын
Car price inflation is pretty consistent (if you exclude dealer markups). Salaries have not kept pace with inflation which is why it "seems" like the auto market is out of control. Think of it this way: even if on paper your current salary is double what it was in 2007, your actual "purchasing power" is no better off than it was back then. I would say the "labor market" is so messed up that pay can't keep up with inflation. Car prices are very much in line with reality.

Gearing is the big answer: while the bmw has 200tq less, the power difference is much smaller, and as long as you have sufficiently short gearing that's all that matters for acceleration. It's also possible that the BMW had more favorable suspension geometry and weight distribution for a hard launch; the review here does say the Mustang is front-heavy (and sure enough, those twin-cam Modulars with tons of stroke were total boat anchors) so it's really no surprise that it can't put enough weight on the rear tires.

I remember driving one of these when they came out and being so underwhelmed. The gearshift handle was like grabbing a softball it was so big, the car felt numb and heavy, but more importantly it’s wasn’t that quick and very little exhaust growl/engine sound. This was at a time when Ford dealers were asking $75k for them, which was absolutely insane considering the far better driving and much faster C6 Z06 had just come out the year prior for about the same price after you figured the Shelby’s markup. Luckily some of the issues were addressed with later versions

Whats it mean when someone says it feels numb?
@jameswillard1
@jameswillard1 11 ай бұрын
@@brandonrickbornponyexpress6574 it means it’s like you are playing a video game or driving a simulator, you turn the steering back and forth and there is no communication coming back from the front tires. Gives you no confidence to push the car hard at all. I have driven a new GT500 though and they’ve come a long way, despite even more weight and power it’s steering actually transmitted actual road feel

I'll never understand the performance numbers this car made. With 500 horsepower, it really should have been faster. I know it has trouble putting the power down, but its trap speed is still underwhelming. Even if it was underrated, the terminator cobra had a far worse power/weight ratio, and was just as fast.

They can’t drive. My 2009 gt500 stock did 12.31 at 116 mph with a 2.09 60 ft time. Now currently does 11.3 at 125 mph with a pulley and tune. And that’s street tires and 60ft 2.0. These cars aren’t slow. They needed driver mods. And yes I’d can get better than 2.0 60 ft but I’m ez on this car

@mariokart8054 I was referring to the quality in regards to the price point of a modern C4 & newer Corvette. When a simple Corolla interior outshines a car costing 4 times as much, it's sort of sad. Yeah, I know, Mustang interiors after 1973 are pretty crappy too. The S550 Mustang is much better, but not like the German or high-end Japanese stuff.
