one of the most honest car reviews I've watched. Love those tanks , comfortable ride , low maintenance cost, great mpg for a V8 and bullet proof. Personally I think it looks even good I don't care if 6 out of 10 people say it's an old men's car. At least old people know what's good for them. Great video !

@Preacher Man doesn't it have "traction control" standard by 03 or 04? Stability control uses the computer and the braking system to modulate. Traction control does the same thing. But in the end the driver needs to know what to do. RWD is easier to manage on slick pavement than FWD to begin with. If you skid to the right you turn into your skid. With fwd it's anyone's best guess what to do in a skid..best to kiss a fwd goodbye if it doesn't have any kind of traction modulation.

I own a 97 currently. First car, didn't maintain it at all. never changed the oil. Threw a rod at 6000+ miles. Which, Ive heard thats a pretty long time, especially for a car I bought with 174000+ miles on it. Lesson learned from it the hard way, did an engine swap with an 05 out of a junkyard. BUT, I developed a valve guide seal leak, I rushed the swap and didnt take the engine apart when I bought it. I'm near the end of its warranty, I'm just going to sell the whole car back to the junk yard. I love these cars, I will be purchasing a newer model. Owning one keeps your insurance low, they are exceptionally comfortable. It is really easy to lose track of how fast youre going on the freeway, due to the fact that it just floats along with no effort. going 115 feels like nothing, and stepping on it after 60, youll get there in no time. The whole car is built to last and it is a bulletproof design, take care of it, and it will go a long way. I look forward to my next one.

I bought a preowned 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis LS Ultimate Edition with 117,000 for 5,000 drive out. It has the standard 4.6L or 281 cubic inch motor with about 239 horse power and factory dual exhaust. It was the lowest priced vehicle on the lot. It was in great condition when I bought it. One of the best cars I have ever owned low maintenance and it does run. It is a grandpa's car but grandpa's has some giddy up. I was surprised at how well it performed. I have red lined a couple of times but for the most part I baby it. I highly recommend these cars.

Being 56 yrs old, I have only bought Grand Marquis for the last 28 years. I'm on my 6th Grand Marquis a 2003 CTE "Custom Tasca Edition". Besides changing the plastic intake manifolds a few times, these cars have never ever let me done. Never a tow in 28 yrs! I usually get about 225,000 miles before I dump them and get another. Very comfortable and reliable ride!

@@TheDutchTexan Always flushed tranny with filter o ring change about every 45,000 and my CTE "Custom Tasca Edition" not quite a Papa's car. Do understand the Grand Marquis being a grandfathers car but I only buy it from a grandpa. They baby their cars with low mileage, never over 55 mph on highway, always changing the oil at 3,000 or 3 months and their the 1st to have it in a garage as soon as there's a problem. Only will buy from the elderly.

Over all it’s a pretty fair review. I just got my used 2004 and the two points I have an issue with is at highway speed I don’t have a problem pointing it where I want it to go and tracks on the curves great so far. The other was while looking at the owners manual I thought I saw where there was an option for a limited slip differential. Even with the open diff., it still used the brakes to slow the wheel spin. It has a button to turn this off if you need to. The main thing I bought it for was for mileage and less to break down. I have a Jeep that fiat de-engineered and turned it into a pile of something that was originally an icon of reliability that helped win wars. You sure wouldn’t want to go off-roading without a support vehicle now.

Wow man I have to say this was the best car review I've seen. I may be biased because I'm inheriting this car and picking it up tomorrow, but the video was really well done. I'm a professional motion graphics artist and the B-roll used in examples such as when you tested the brakes and when hitting the gas were used well and made the flow of the video much more entertaining than the general video I see. Clearly this was a performance review but it would have bee nice to perhaps see a more detailed shot of the interior dash and cup holders and what not (or lack there of). Altogether the time it clearly took to attach cameras in several different positions on a mount, the editing (however simple enough cause these things take time), and the sheer knowledge of the performance features gave me a great sense of understanding how this car will feel to own and drive. I just want to say thanks for your time and effort affording me the luxury of a first hand look of this awesome car.

My second ever car review. The ones I do now are a lot different. I actually still own the car, but with over 100K highway miles and a hail storm later it no longer looks as clean sadly. I wish I could put it in a garage but that is where my 05 Mustang lives. If I ever get another car I would shoot another review in the same style just to see if I can still make it work by myself.

I wont part with my 07 MGM LS. 150k miles and the best daily driver Ive ever owned. For a 2 ton car it actually handles pretty well. I commute through a tight windy mountain road twice a day. With the stock sway bars and suspension, no rear airbags it handles the turns and hills very well as long as the center armrests are down to keep me from sliding across the seat 😆 Although the stock sways do a pretty surprising job when pushed into turns the thicker 1" sway bars from a P71 would make a huge improvement for my commute.

I love the Grand Marquis. I'm on my third one. The first one was a 2003, the first year for the new front suspension, rack and pinion steering, and four wheel disc brakes. I bought it with 79,000 miles on it, and ran it up to 264,000, with very few problems. I gave it to my daughter and son in law, and they drove it for several years. The next one was a 2006. It had 101,000 on it when I bought it, and currently has 289,000. I still have it. It shows the wear of being used as a daily driver, but still runs just fine. I happened upon a 2007 in near new condition, with 47,000 miles on it, and bought it. This was the most expensive one of the bunch at $9,900, but it's absolutely beautiful. Looks like it just came off the showroom floor. All three are/were LS models. I intend to keep driving the 2006 until the engine fails, then I'll start driving the 47,000 mile 2007. I would love to have a limited slip differential, but for what I use it for, mostly long distance trips, it really doesn't matter that much, and I absolutely love the 2.73 rear axle and overdrive. 30+ mpg on the highway at 65 mph is amazing, and the engine and transmission are turning over just above idle. Probably why they last so long. I'm 64, and I want a big, comfortable, V8 powered rear wheel drive car that just floats over the road. I do have a Mustang for when I feel like driving something sportier, but I'd sure hate to drive that cross country. I would likely be in considerable pain. These cars have very few problems in my experience. My rear air suspension failed on both the '03 and '06. I replaced the airbags with coil springs, which worked just fine. The blend door actuator for the climate control tends to fail, the plastic gears in it strip out. Because the dash has to come out to replace it, I just rigged it. I removed the right airbag and glovebox, used a 3 foot long piece of rebar to make a chisel, and reached through the airbag opening and broke off the little tabs where the retainer screws go, and it dropped down where I could get to the wires and cut them. I jammed the blend door in the full A/C position and left it. We don't need heat here in the Phoenix, AZ area, and if it gets too cold, I just put on a jacket. The 4.6L SOHC 2 valve has a plastic intake manifold, and I had one start leaking. I replaced it and it was fine from then on. I had one alternator fail. $50 at Autozone. I also had to replace the serpentine belt tensioner on the '03 and '06. That's pretty much it. Not bad considering just how many miles I have put on these cars. These are the last of the '70s style American land yachts, and they are getting harder and harder to find. The prices on nice ones are going way up. Believe it or not, as big as these cars are, a V8 Dodge Challenger is almost 500 pounds heavier.
@TheDutchTexan
@TheDutchTexan 11 ай бұрын
Nice write up! I still miss mine. I had the blend door issue myself and it costs a lot to get fixed because indeed, the dash needs to come out. The car got hailed on and then dropped the transmission at 135K miles. I drove it pretty hard though so it was to be expected. Decided to move on because they wanted $3500 for the fix which far exceeded the vehicles value at that time. And I could hear that blend door making noise again too.

I bought a 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis LS last March. It had 95,000 miles, one owner. With all service records showing serviced at the dealer every 3000 miles. It was mint. Only thing CD player had issues and I still like cd's. I took it to the dealer for the oil change last July. They found no issues. I did have them try and find an original stereo, there were two left. I had to have it, because I did not want a jury rigged system. This way it was plug and play. I love this car. Comfortable leather seats. I think it handles great, since I am not an Indy driver. I took it on trip last week ( first one) from Fresno to Placerville. It averaged 25 MPG and never bogged down driving uphill. The other great thing about the car is you do not have to bash your head in, to get in and out. Last car was 93 Old's 88.When motor died I started looking at new cars. Unless you buy an over priced SUV, I would bash my head in getting in and out. I then drove my 68 F100 for a year looking for something better. Then I came across the Mercury. We'll worth the wait .

I enjoyed the video and have read all the comments here and am glad to hear there are many out there that praise this iconic panther platform, son of a tank sedan. I have recently acquired a 2001 MGM LS that I first I saw at a local dealer's website. Love at first sight is an understatement here as I willingly traded my highly sought after low mileage (67K) '09 Regular Cab Tacoma for the Marquis plus $500 from the dealer for a new set of tires. The Michelins on it are like new with no signs of cracking and loads of tread but are 9 years old... I'm still running them on the LS for now as I travel in a rural area and have a short commute at night to my job working graveyard at a 24 hour 'gas and grub'. The condition of this LS is near 'Showroom' ..."Like New" ... just 54K on the odometer, a real beauty with the faux carriage convertible cloth top, dark/navy blue over a light blue gorgeous body and yes the car obviously was garaged its entire life. I'm told by the dealer it was owned by the original 'Church Lady' who drove less than 3,500 miles every year, the CARFAX tells a story of immaculate care and attention to this car in every conceivable manner. She had the money apparently and the desire to have this car maintained to perfection at every turn. Yes, this '01 MGMLS surely was loved by and cherished by its one and only owner that likely took her blue haired church lady friends to church every Sunday before parking her LS baby back in the garage and by the way only letting her local dealer's garage service it and the CARFAX supplied, well it reads like a juvenile delinquent's rap sheet. I hope to get many more years of service from this car as I am the quintessential old man (60 yrs. old) and I expect this car will out last me in the end. Currently I'm without power door locks, trunk release, one touch window down and the driver's door keypad and the remote fob are all inoperative. Secondly just got'ta say here that the OEM intake 'all plastic' manifold is still performing well (no leaks noted) but I do intend on having it R & R'd with the better after market one... The recent Dorman replacement seems to be one possibility at 1/2 the cost of Ford's replacement part. Does anyone here care to say what they think either way on this Dorman v. Ford's more expensive part. I don't know where I'll have the work done as of yet; if I was younger and not out of shape and had the tools I'd consider doing the job myself. I'd like to consider having a qualified mobile mechanic do the job as this would allow me to be sure that whomever does the job won't try to take short cuts or hide any mis-steps along the way.

Just wanted to say I liked the video. I bought a 2007 MGM-GS with only 38K miles on it back in July, and I love it. It's the same exterior color as yours in fact. Mine's a bit of a unicorn though. It's the GS model and a stripper at that. The only option shown on the window sticker is a front license plate bracket (required in Texas). But, it has leather! I was concerned that would be a problem in the Texas summer, but since it's garage kept, it really hasn't been a problem. I plan on keeping it for awhile and maybe even putting dual exhaust and P71 suspension parts on it for better handling.

Mine is sitting outside, it no longer looks this clean at 110K miles unfortunately. About a year ago hail got the better of her. She still looks pretty from 20' though, and the paint shines up nicely when washed. It is time to send her to a new owner sometime this year I think. She has served me well over the years, never left me stranded. And I love cruising at 80. So comfortable, and it turns just shy of 2K rpm. My potential next car won't do that I bet!

Hello..I have a 2006 Grand Marquis LS Ultimate model with only 48k miles....has all options including the air suspension....my drivers side power window stopped working and than suddenly a few days later it started working again ...the local Firestone shop charged me a reasonable $49 to diagnose and they told me it went off of its track so they put it back on the track and it started to work again .....also my ABS and traction control lights come on but only intermittently...maybe every 8 th time I take the car out.....When they come on the brakes appear fine as usual so I have not taken it anywhere to get checked out....plus I live now on a very small fixed income......any ideas or suggestions what would cause the drivers side window to come off of its track ? and also why the ABS light ( and at time also the traction control light with it ) will come on but only intermittently ?.....Thank you and good driving video ......the only thing I do not love about mine is the air suspension ...at times when turning the engine off the air suspension motor mounted under the hood will run and make a loud noise for about 15 seconds from time to time ( at least that is what my local Ford dealer told me the noise was from )....and also when I had new tires installed on the car at an independent tire shop they did not turn off the air suspension using the button located in the trunk and only later while looking for something else in my owners manual did I discover Ford says turn it OFF before lifting the car.

The town car is also a panther platform car. It's just a bit longer and heavier. But it is way more upscale! My grand marquis slots in right in between the crown vic and the town car when it comes to luxury level. (although, I think it's a wash... I would have gotten a crown vic if I could find a decent one at the time of purchase).

Panthers can be made to handle fairly well but the tradeoff is less ride. Install police struts and coils, front and rear. Install police front sway bar and 21mm rear bar from 1998-2002 HPP optioned cars. You can go a little further with poly bushings and upgraded end links. I would disable VAPS as I prefer linear assist power steering but that is a personal preference thing.

The Dutch Texan yes I do have a white model. I have a few patched spots and a place that is starting to chip up. I'm planning on coating it in Plasti Dip just to so that it doesn't get any worse. Also, those cars are so cheap now I find it hard to justify spending much money on making it look good LOL.

I've always been curious to what the advantages are of having overdrive on and off, does one deliver better performance than the other, is one better for hwy driving?
@TheDutchTexan
@TheDutchTexan 9 жыл бұрын
When you are just driving around you leave everything alone. When you put your foot in it from cruising you want to turn off overdrive before you do so to prevent damage to the overdrive band. Also, when you are going down a steep hill you want to stay out of overdrive to utilize engine braking.

My god man you are talking about one of the most beautiful highway cars on the road today and its still has a good look to it. This car is also beautiful in the city as well as on the highway not sure what you are talking about on that point.

Still running it today. It doesn’t look like this anymore though. The hail and 100K+ highway driving got to it. And naturally one makes a comparison, it has a V8. I still fantasize about fixing it up, suspension, nice wheels, sticky rubber and some engine work... But, different priorities. So it stays the highway warrior it is now. Cruising 80 at a hair below 2K rpm and getting over 20mpg doing it.

I worked in TV in Indy for several years. One May, former Indy 500 Champ Dario Franchitti was in the studio for an interview and I was working. He was complaining about his rental car (off the air) saying the Grand Marquis was the worst car he'd ever driven. I chuckled, because I LOVE the Grand Marquis and Crown Vics, (they're comfy) but it just goes to show you what someone who has access to the finest cars in the world thinks. He hated it.

I am sure it can with the right software tools. If a car shows very low miles look for excessive wear on the interior like carpet, steering wheel, gas and brake pedal covers. A car fax would be helpful too, those record mileage at each service.

Whenever I see this video of my grand marquis I feel sad. It isn't the mileage (103K as we speak) but the hail storm that dinged it up. It still has old school steel, so it wasn't as banged up as other cars in the neighborhood but still. It still rides great. I have had to replace the HVAC controls at around 70K, front shocks at 90K and the alternator around 100K. Save for the AC it was all routine maintenance.

@bbigjohnson069
@bbigjohnson069 8 жыл бұрын
+nash benkard I'd like to see that manual. You got it backwards. Traction control helps you get out of those types of situations where there is LESS traction and one wheel is just spinning ( shallow sand, mud, snow, ice) Traction control is to accelerating as Anti-Lock brakes are to decelerating. In fact that's how it works using ABS. TC stops the wheels from spinning too fast and not gripping. ABS keeps them from locking up in a skid. You said "stuck" If vehicle is stuck to the point where neither drive wheel is able to turn TC won't help you if it's on or off. You need 4WD or tow vehicle in that case.

Hey bud I just picked up a 2008 Grand Marquis LS, it has 60,120 miles and seems to have been properly taken care of, but I don't have a service history for it. Any suggestions on things I should look out for or something I should go ahead and take care of now? I'll do the usual oil change, new air filter, check out the spark plugs and belt but aside from that any suggestions would be helpful! Great video btw.
@TheDutchTexan
@TheDutchTexan 6 жыл бұрын
Just take it to the dealership and have them check it out. But if it goes straight, stops straight and accelerates normal I'd just stick to the regular maintenance schedule. The only thing I ran into was the HVAC control unit and the blend door not working right as a result. I had that fixed which cost me $$$ but everything is fine now. Rear shock was blown at 40K miles and the front suspension was shot at 98K miles. I had the fan go out at around 80K miles which also had to be replaced. I am now simply racking up the miles on the old girl till it is time to move on. I am at 101K miles now, I figure I'll get something else between 120-140K (1-2 years from now).

+Jesse Hargrove I don't think you can get the digi dash in a newer 06< grand marquis. It's cool, but also very very 80's-90's in my opinion. I'd rather keep the regular dash for simplicity. I am sure people have swapped dashboards, but I doubt it was without issue.

I just purchased a 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis LS. I was extremely impressed with the comfort and smooth ride when I took it out and bought it on the spot. Since then I have been looking at any info I can find. Your video is exactly what I have experienced. It's a VERY comfortable car and perfect for a 43 year old with a family. You just can't race IROCs with it... Quick question - I know a fast turn signal usually means a light it out somewhere but they're all good. Is this normal? I get one slow click... then it's clickclickclick. I was trying to listen to yours in the video but couldn't tell. Thanks! Great review!

@TheDutchTexan
@TheDutchTexan 8 жыл бұрын
Both would be a great choice and the engines and transmissions will last forever. Unfortunately other parts do break, and one of the major things to look out for is the HVAC components that reside in the dash. Mine are going out, and fixing it requires the removal of the dash for one of the items. It costs a lot of money to get that done, and I am not about to pull a dash to do it myself. Compressor is fine, but that is the easy one to replace. I got 82k miles on it now and the problems started to become evident at around 50k miles, those are parts that should last the life of the car to be honest. Listen to moaning from the passenger side when shutting the car off. Maybe some creaking. That is a sign those AC parts are about to go out and I wouldn't be surprised if either control would be 1000 bucks to replace at the dealer.

@TheDutchTexan

This body style started model year 2006. It is an option, but due to lower sales and many fleet cars in the later years you will be hard pressed to find a younger grand marquis with fogs. I am unsure you could get them on GS cars, but the provision in the bumper is there to add them later (I don't know what it involved with the install, or if wires are already present, I do know you need at least another headlight switch).
