My father had a truck frame straightened about 45 years ago. I know that old R-series MACK is still hauling logs out of some pretty rough country. So there is some more proof it is safe in the long term.

Great videos. You have the style to have a TV show. I know not a lot of people are interested in seeing how the real world works. I would enjoy being in your shop to watch you work but I know my many questions would hold up your work. My dad used to do this at home on a much smaller scale. Car wheels, bumpers, bicycle frames , bent hinges. I learned a lot from watching and apply it in my work at home. Thanks heaps. Greetings from Melbourne Australia.

Like you said, there are standards and tolerances. As long as it's straight and not compromised, I'd run it. People are too quick to throw things away these days. When I'm done with something ib try to find someone who can use it instead of just chucking it in the bin

I worked in the Oil and Gas industry and the truck I drove (late 90s Western Star) was pulling such a heavy load (fixed load) that every 12 to 18 months we had to have the frame straightened as it would develop a slight twist from normal operation. I could tell it was getting close because the bumper would almost be touching to hood on one side.
@Poorexampeofhuman8 ай бұрын
I've had frame rails straightened before, only once did I feel that it wasn't going to be as strong as it originally was, so I just added a little bit of strengthening to it. Chasing I welded up some gusseting and it's an extra plate and well ended up better than it was before I bought it.

2 years ago I broke the frame on one of my trucks, nothing bent just stress cracks (its a self loader so lots of focused stress on one area) anyway after a bit of panicking, talked to a buddy, turns out every one of his trucks has been shortened or extended in one way or another, finding a truck on the used market that hasn't had some form of serious frame repair is near impossible... anyhow bout 60 hours of labor later, frame sectioned, welded and sleaved, with a lot better cross members and bolt pattern then previously... better then ever.

Good work. Would it help if you welded a solid brace to the inner side of where the bend was? Not sure if it's necessary but if that point where it bent is weaker now, a brace might help. Assuming, of course, it doesn't interfere with operation.
@janb.2025 Жыл бұрын
By welding something on a thick metal frame, you weaken the metal and also it will bend due to the heat of the welding. That's why they use screws.
@holmes1956O Жыл бұрын
The frame is no weaker than when it was made. Consider this the frame started out as a flat piece of steel. Then the company that made the frame bent that steel into the c channel shape of the frame. Did that weaken it. No it did not

I can imagine that there are some people that say they can straighten frames and I imagine there's people that have drove those trucks that supposedly the frames have been straightened out so they've had ridiculous experiences but I'll tell you if this guy straightens a frame right here you can guarantee that it's straight and if they really know what they're doing like he does it's going to be just as good if not better than what it was before the there's a difference between somebody that says they're a frame straightener and somebody that can actually do the job the right way and put it back exactly how it's supposed to
@josebecerra1681 Жыл бұрын
With this videos people. Appreciate more our work. Cause there is no instructions or guides of how to. Actually we use our brains to know where and how either pull or push. Point down or up. And yes we do design our own hooks for special purposes

At what point is it cheaper just to slide in new frame rails?
@Cragified Жыл бұрын
First availability. Older the truck harder to get two matching rails (Even the same model of truck can have variance that's a few inches which means you'll have to stretch a rail. Second is man hours. It's a lot of man hours to unbolt everything from the frame and put it on a new one. Steel is very elastic and ductile. The main reason this isn't so common anymore, especially on passenger vehicles is first unibodies are way more complicated to straighten then a ladder frame. And second it takes someone that has spent a long time getting the wisdom of the science and art of pushing steel back into shape without going too far. Can't just read off a service manual how to do this stuff.

For those people that won't have a truck with a straightened frame. How do you think the frame got manufactured in the first place? Just like any other kind of repair, it depends on the shop and mechanics doing the work.
@jerrykinnin79412 жыл бұрын
Torn "frame horns" is a common problem in the intermodal world. So I like the "Schneider Bob" That's where the frame rail ends square at the last cross member. Schneider does this on their container trucks.5thwheel height plays a roll in that We got some 2018 T880s that have 18" of frame behind the rear axle. Why KW why what purpose does that serve? 5th wheel can't slide forward of neutral(tandem centerline) so your frontend is light and I've seen the KWs have 43000 + in the box. And the frontend be 1000 lbs lighter loaded than empty. If I owned my own truck I'd Schneider Bob ever one.
