2007 Mazdaspeed3 evap leak FIX! (code p0442, p0455)

so this is a video that has been made by few others but none "in depth" on the Speed platform. Yes this locking ring is used for all the earlier makes and models. Not sure about the gen 2 speed3 but i'm assuming it is the same. Just like me you have to do your research!

Also keep in mind an EVAP LEAK CAN BE TRICKY! This is just one of the possibilities that it can be. worth a check if you have an older model!

Man you are the best! I have an 07 Mazda 3, spent hours watching vids on the P0442 code that I have. Also my garage reeks of gasoline after I fill the tank. I already replaced the gas cap and tested the purge valve (tube in water, jumper wire to the valve etc, valve is fine). After watching your video tonight guess what.... I removed my back seat and.. crack in the EXACT direction and area as yours!! Identical crack! As I ran my finger along it. Like you said in another comment evap can be very tricky. I am SO GLAD I found a problem area thanks to your video, even if if doesn’t solve it which is possible given one of your recent comments. I will definitely be changing this seal out soon. Did you have to disconnect the fuel filler neck from the gas door or anything like that to lower it? Is there enough slack or flex in the filler neck that you can leave that all alone?

You have to disconnect the soft hose section of the filler neck where it connects to the back of the gas tank under the car.

FYI There is a recall on this part for the 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6 and 2009-2011 RX-8. The part number, at least for the RX-8 is the same as the part for the Mazdaspeed3. STATEMENT ON SAFETY RECALL 5121I OF CERTAIN MAZDA RX-8 AND MAZDASPEED6 VEHICLES FUEL MAY LEAK FROM FUEL PUMP MOUNTING RINGS

What symptoms were you having when you had this code?

Lower gas mileage, smell of fuel in cabin (mine was minor) Also it seemed like my fuel pressure was off, car would take a bit to build rpm on startup but that could be dealt with my compression. This issue isn’t anything serious but something to note when receiving this code. Chances are your locking ring can look a lot similar as mine once did!

In my 2012 Mazdaspeed 3, the plastic nipple at the top of the housing that connects to the hose cracked, so I had to drop the whole tank and replace the top of the housing with one from a salvage 2013 Mazda 3. It was a pain in the ass for such a small malfunction 😤😤

Glad you got yours fixed! Having a fueling/spark issue in my car now. Hpfp is reading in the low 20’s and won’t start. Cranking but no start. Just installed an AEM E85 safe in tank fuel pump and did all the steps right in the shop. (No fuel leaks) Car ran all the way home and on the way back to work today it was idling low (250) psi when I came to a red light after 15 minuets of driving and then died. Had to get it towed. Not sure of cause yet.

Hey bro when like leaning over the tank like that did you unplug any of the filer neck hoses because for me I took of the 12 mm and the gas lines in front and the tank didn’t want to drop do you know what else is like holding it intact ?

Disconnect the 1 filler neck hose on the back right of tank 👍🏼

I noticed that you said it started right up. Did it used to not start up as quick before you changed the ring ?

Carl S yes exactly, It would take a couple seconds to build up fuel pressure. Then would idle ok.

Carl S keep in mind the evap leak can be tricky to pin point, My code is still reappearing for me. However this is one of the first things to check. I’m thinking my turbo seals are leaking a bit letting in a bit of air from vacuum and releasing too much air on boost (a bit rich) could be another cause if you’re on a stock k04 like myself.

@@omeroayala1961 it was this plastic ring in the end. Got it done with a quarter of tank left. It wasn’t too heavy. Some things were annoying to take off but i was being careful to not break anything and make it worse. I ended up changing out the Valve canister as well since i was in the area.
