+ThatGuyNamedScott. Yup. Would be nice to know how much of that talk about " i've had none major problems" is just talk though. I mean just the way he says "NO, NO" at 5:52 gives it away. It's a cool car and i love seeing one of those CLS's out, but they're money pits and everyone knows that. Diagnosing and repairing anything is a nightmare.

+rock Who said anything about working on a Benz? I said that repairing problems and diagnosing them is usually a nightmare. Hint: All of the 20 different E-classes i've driven in the past year still have warranty, so working on the cars isn't my concern. Constant trips to dealer about unsolved gremlins in the cars does have an effect on the way i think about them. Mainly "how damn expensive is it to maintain these things when they aren't under warranty anymore"? Just think about how much diagnosing and fixing that fly-by-wire throttle system on this CLS would cost? I Bet that none of the modules and components would indicate to the tester that they are failing, so your only hope is to start replacing those expensive modules one by one until you find the cause. That's the only thing that dealers do nowadays, and when those modules cost a ton, (literally, they're usually over a 1000€), it's gonna get expensive real fast. Even this 2007 made example is now NINE years old, keep that in mind. Problems are gonna rise. That's just how it goes nowadays with every single expensive car and more and more with "cheap" ones as well, and everyone knows that.

Some people melt their pistons and throw their rods out because their cars don't have safety systems such as that " hiccup" that most likely prevented a serious failure. While it might be slightly annoying, its very rare that a Mercedes throws a rod or melts a piston. That's why they are usually behind in performance a bit because they implement a lot of safety features that ensures engines don't blow up like in BMW's and Mazdas

i've heard of porsches that have needed coil pack replacements at 4 years/ 40k KILOMETERS, so yeah, a 10 year old car with 60k MILES needing a replacement shouldn't be a surprise. The tell tale sign for this is usually ESC failure and/or Auto Stop Start failure. Ignoring the issue for too long usually leads to misfires in that particular cylinder.

It's nice that cars from that era, with engines like the M156, the S85B50 or Audi's V10 5.2 TFSI (S8, RS6 C6) are becoming affordable. You have access to what are pretty much the best NA engines fitted to sedans (well Audi's is not NA but they won't make them that big anyway), and while the interior is a bit dated it's still alright i guess, because the level of luxury kinda compensates. The only thing is, some people are trapped by that opportunity because of the maintenance costs (especially for the E60 M5 !)... I think you should always have that in mind and not be blindfolded by what you get from the get go to avoid an extreme disppointment.
@cedb71158 жыл бұрын
You better know how to wrench and DIY if u want to own any of those aforementioned cars. Just keep in mind that they were $100k cars and car parts never lose value.
@Kaisuke9718 жыл бұрын
+Xplosion51 Yeah. One of the best opportunities i see is the N54 335i, because of its tuning potential. When these things will be low as hell (like 330ci now), they'll become insane performance bargains. You can get over 400hp without breaking the bank, plus they look really good with the M Sport package.
@dannyllerenatv86358 жыл бұрын
+Kaisuke971 Whats also cool is that you're starting to see the aftermarket grow for the E9X M3s as well now that they're in the used market. The N54 335i was a game changer for BMW however, I think the N54 equipped cars were a huge factor on why the new M3/M4 went FI besides emissions and fuel economy. I know BMW took note on the potential of those cars.
@Kaisuke9718 жыл бұрын
Dantheman Meh... The S65B40 is literally a race engine (race variants used in Z4 GT3 and some LMP2 race car), i feel like forced induction is ruining it. There are some really cool parts like mod Carbon air intake, a huge variety of exhaust. Other than that i'd focus more on the car's handling and weight to make it less GT and more sport car. The S55B30 is an insanely good engine. Yes it sounds unique, which you'll find either great or really bad, but character wise Chris Harris and Steve Sutcliffe described it as perfect. With the forced induction, they can get reliable 500hp out of it, that's pretty cool. I think the next gen will improve it even more, it'll be awesome. And it revs to 7.5k too, which is surprisingly higher than the original M3's S14.
@dannyllerenatv86358 жыл бұрын
+Kaisuke971 I'm the type that would blow the cash to stroke the S65B40(it responds very well to being stroked but that costs a fortune) but the S55 is definitely a masterpiece in terms of engineering. Such a responsive engine and the throttle response is unreal and unheard of for an FI motor.

So after 9 years, this car lost $75,000 of it value, yet you can get them with 40,000 miles. Sounds to good to be true, but there has to be a reason for this; it is a money pit. Like each cylinder has 2 spark plugs, for a total of 16 spark plugs needed to do a change on a v8. The pads were designed too small so when you need new pads, you will need new rotors every-time vs resurfacing them as the small pads made a lip groove into the rotor. There is a module for everything thing on the car and when they fail, which they do as it is old computer technology, the car won't run. Do you want a car that throws a fault code for a light out in the trunk? They went over board with the sensors and then charge $500 plus for a new sensor. I really wanted to buy a cls63 used, but after reading the forums, I decided not too.

+Scott H I was in this same predicament 2 weeks ago. My wife narrowed it down (she needed the car) to a 2014 535ixdrive BMW (Msport package) or a 2014 GS350 AWD. The Lexus won out just because of the reliability and that was one of the top priorities for her. I liked the performance of the BMW (it only had 14K miles) but the price was $39K (good price), the Lexus had about 20K miles at $34K. Good luck on your choice of car.

People complain about reliability and part cost but you can't forget your buying a $110k car for 3x less. Their great cars, if you take care of it will take care of you. As Matt said the build quality in general is soo good, you really shouldn't worry about replacing expensive struts and shit, just service it and don't cheap out on maintenance.
@omarawad21618 жыл бұрын
Actually the air shocks are extremely easy and somewhat cheap to change out. Third party companies re-manufacture OEM struts and sell them with a lifetime warranty. They're about $300 each, and considering that there is a lifetime warranty, it basically covers you forever. M156 and the transmission are bullet-proof if taken care of properly.
@rg-zb6hs8 жыл бұрын
My front driver side air shock went out on my CLS and it's in the shop now being repaired for 1100$ its not cheap even if you buy the car for cheaper lol
@omarawad21618 жыл бұрын
rg11 You got ripped off. Re-manufactured struts from Arnott cost around $400 and with a lifetime warranty. Labor at an independent shop should cost you no more than $300, totaling to about $700. It's easy to replace it yourself if you choose to, and it'll save you the labor costs.
@rg-zb6hs8 жыл бұрын
Yeah but I wanted OEM and new. also I live in Canada and even re-manufactured struts from Arnott would have costed me 800 to come to Canada I lose either way.
@omarawad21618 жыл бұрын
rg11 Ah gotcha. Stuff in Canada is really expensive, I won't argue that. Arnott struts are actually OEM Mercedes-Benz struts, just re-manufactured. But yeah if you can get new struts for about the same price then you might as well get them.
