This is what makes Jeff Gordon (in my opinion) the greatest driver in the world. Patience. He knew all he had to do was get in position to lead that one lap and he waited and waited and waited until he had the chance and he pulled that car up in front of Stewart and used him to vault in front of the pack! I remember watching this race when I was 12 years old, not only did I see my now favorite paint scheme of all time cross the line first in spectacular fashion, but I got to see Jeff Gordon produce a win that was flat-out magic and show me how a REAL racer and TRUE champion performs on the track. That's why this is my favorite race of all time. I'm glad I got to see 13 more examples of his expert driving and super human patience pay off before he retired. Still holding out hope for a win as he's filling out for the 88 this year!

This was probably Jeff Gordon's "face turn" if you wanna call it that. Did you hear the ovation he got from the crowd on his winning pass? And this was at Talladega! Not Indy or California where you'd probably expect to hear a warm reception for Jeff, but Talladega? The track he got beer-bombed at twice.

@JGR4LIFE That would make sense if this was like 2009 or something, but they also cheered when Jimmie Johnson took the lead in this race, as well.

All I can say is R.I.P. Gen 5 car. It was ugly as hell but it made for some great racing at restrictor plate tracks. This was one of the most exciting Dega races I can remember. With the exception of the final lap of the spring Dega race this year, the Gen 6 is just a pretty face with nothing else to offer.

I've never figured out why ESPN cut away from the lead pack on the final lap to show some incidental battle for position. They totally missed Gordon's move to the outside.

this race reminded me of the 2002-2003 years, a small pack of only about 15-20 competitive cars remaining in the race
@nascarfanatic2425

It's a good thing Mickey's cut tire incident happened at the back of the pack. That coul've been a lot more hurrendous than what it was. 4 cars involved was a good number, but towards the front or middle of the pack could've taken a good 10-12 racecars out.

ESPN's coverage has gotten better. The reason it was so bad in 2007 was having "non racing" personalities be put in broadcasting positions (Suzy Kolber, Chris Fowler, Eric Kusileus, etc...)

@flubber342 I think if drivers would've had the knowledge of the two-car drafts back in 2006, we'd see the same thing we're seeing today. The biggest misconception about the old (restrictor plate) car was that the front and rear bumpers don't line up. If you look at any restrictor plate race back then, you'll see that they actually do. The only thing that would eliminate it would be a worn out, bumpy track, or completely re-designing the front and back of the car, which isn't going to happen.

@chevystud88 It was truely a great race that day, that's for sure. 'Course the plate races this past season were amazing. The Daytona 500 was one of the most incredible Cinderella Story finishes ever. The Aaron's 499 race had an incredible finish- and a lot of crashes. The Coke Zero 400 had a good finish too, but I was bummed that Jeff Gordon didn't win. The Amp Energy Juice 500 had a wild finish.

@flubber342 They softened the front in 2006 to stop the "slam" drafting that they were doing in the Bud Shootout. You could still push guys just fine. On your second point, if NASCAR got involved, I think the racing would be atrocious. Remember in 2009 when they told drivers to stop pushing in the turns? It was awful. They ran single file at the top of the track all day.

Dillon Murway I liked how the cars looked in 2006, with the introduction to the Ford Fusion and how the Dodge Chargers looked. But I'd go back as far as 2004 though for bodies styles because I didn't really care for how the Dodges looked, but I liked the Ford Taurus and I kind of miss the Chevy Monte Carlo.
