I agree on your thoughts about Toyota quality. I've seen it go down. On my 2007 Tacoma with the 2.7 liter engine, I had to change a water pipe from the back of the water pump towards the firewall. The pipe is plastic with an aluminum fitting where it mounts to the engine. Toyota knows it's an issue because the replacement is a stainless steel pipe.

I agreed that getting a used low mileage or JDM engine is better because there are so many small parts need to put back 100% correctly; otherwise, the engine would not be perfect and you have to do it again. Used engine is made in factory and under 100% specification and never been "touch". By the way, this looks like is the last year of 2014 (supposed to be better - less bugs) before the new style come in. Thanks for the video.👍

It's hard to tell...just check your torque converter bolts, motor mount bolts, and axles.

Take all spark plugs out and then put your compression gauge into the cylinder and it until compression up to the top. You can crank it without take your fuel pump fuse.

@sai742 if you maintained regularly it could go to 500k km or more. But this engine is very bad oil consumption so you really really have to check every week oil.

@matemahe yes buy a good used engine is expensive too. Look around to see how much used engine and labor compare it to buy another used car. If only a thousand or 2 different then just buy a used car so less headache.
