Very common problem with the fuse box thats used in a few GM vehicles

This was it ! It is exactly what happened with my 2009 Buick Lucerne. I am very thankful for this video. When I ordered the new fuse box from my local GM dealer they said there was a notice about this, and even printed off a memorandum from GM about it, with some other recommended modifications to make so it doesn't happen again. Has to do with the seat latch. You're a great guy for making this video. Thank you.

I just came across this and found this exact issue. I told customer fuse box needs to be replaced. But since I got the car running he said he will do it later. Hopefully he doesn’t make that decision when he’s stuck on the side of the road

Good advice. In addition, cut some of the metal seat cushion clip off and get a low fuel pump fuse to put in the new replacement box. If now you will have the same issue. Since I did that, no more issues in 3 years. Car runs like a champ.

Had same issue with mine, 2008 buick CXL 3.8, they wanted 300 dollers for new fuse box!! I disconnected the wires from fuse box (solid gray wire and green wire with white strip) put a inline fuse (20 amp) on the gray wire an connect to pin number 30 on relay, it goes to fual pump, the fuse should be as close as possible to the relay connection. The green wiire with white strip is the pcm wire an it connects to pin 85 on relay. Run a fused wire (20 amp) from battery an connect to pin 87 on relay (constant power) the fuse should be as close as possible to battery connection! Theres one pin left on the relay, run a wire from it to battery ground. Remove the 20 amp fuse pointed out in the video its no longer needed, if you bought a new relay (not good to use old one) remove old relay pointed out in video no longer needed. i bought connectors an crimped on wires then slid onto relay pins an tape up good with electrical tape, you dont want pin connections to make contact with anouther pin or touch something metel under the seat! Make sure you identify each wire (pin 87, pin 85 an so on incase you ever have to replace relay) been driving for 3 or 4 years now an no issue, saved myself 300 bucks! make sure you disconnect battery while doing all of this! FYI Iam a 50 yr old guy thats been working on my own cars all my life not a certified mechanic, just did my own research an got my car back on the road.

Gmail bulletin says you should also cut end of clip that goes into slot to hold seat .cut off about 1 inch to avoid clip arcing with relay.

Our 2008 Lucerne has no issue concerning this. I just checked...slight contact marks found on fuse box cover...pulled the seat and grabbed a hacksaw. 4 minutes later seat hanger tabs were history. Additionally, I checked the "tall" OEM fuel pump relay. It was tight with zero discoloration, so I guess we dodged that bullet. Keep a close eye on your battery. If you're on a budget and purchase the cheapest lead-acid you can afford, check that battery several times a year for leakage / seat foam deterioration due to "off-gassing." BTW, the Buick just hit 70K and I assume this might happen more frequently to high mileage Lucernes.

just FYI, batteries for the Lucerne should have a vent hose to prevent off-gassing inside of the vehicle. try not to break the plug off when removing/installing a new battery.

There is also a stubby low profile relay that replaces the original one They are getting harder to find they also recommending cutting the seat bracket from the inside out about 15 mm so it doesn’t put pressure onto the fuse box itself

Also when you pull your fues box lid open to access the fuses and relays you will hit the back of the relay that keeps burning out so make sure you'll hold both clips on each side push down the clips of the lid then pull the lid straight up because if you do one side at a time I guarantee you you're going to move that relay and it's going to loosenet connection up on the relay. It's a good tip that I gave you because a lot of people do it that way and they keep opening the fuse box up and hitting the back of the relay and moving it around and causing it to loosen so make sure you pull the lid straight up

My 2010 Buick Lucerne's Super fuse cover had two areas where it was rubbing. The front area of the cover near the metal latch which pushes against the fuel pump relay. I just bent back the metal near the latch with a pair of pliers. Also the top of the fuse box had minor wear, where it was making contact with the bottom of the back seat where there is metal located in the foam. Weight from the rear passenger pushes down the foam and metal on top of the fuse box which presses down on the fuel pump relay. I haven't tried to bend the thick wire located in the area of the foam on the bottom of the seat as of yet. But will figure it out soon.

Sounds like something GM would say lol... they may call it a service bulletin for the techs... replace fuse box then trim metal on the bottom of the backseat near fuse box

My 08 DTS has this problem. They don't make new boxes anymore. Bought a used one that isn't burnt up and I am waiting for it to come in.

Did you ever check the temperature of the relay while it’s in use. When mine was malfunctioning, it was up in the mid 150s. Some of the research showed it needed to be in the 80s I rebuilt my fuse box by disassembling it along with another one that I had years ago and I replaced the pins and cleaned it and polished the receiver sections I’m now in the 120s as far as temperature. I’m wondering if you can help me with this to make sure the relay is not still overheating

According to the service bulletin, you are supposed to trim the bracket so it won't continue to rub on the box. Otherwise in time it will just happen again.

Once that Iron metal for the rear seat touches the fuses in the electrical fuse box it blows out the whole electrical fuse box I owned a 2008 & 2011 buick lucerne

The so-called technical bulletin was to cut off part of the seat bracket, and a new low-profile relay. Frankly, bend the bracket 90-degrees is fine. I wrote this problem up and submitted to the NTSB. The real problem lies in the design of the fuel management system. When a fuel pump begins to enter its end of life, it begins to draw more current, it is this current that causes this problem. Most people that have this melted fuse box, will undoubtedly have a fuel pump sending unit failure soon after. The fuel system in this vehicle runs continuously when the engine is running and as the pump motor begins the fail, it draws an increase in current, not enough to blow the fuse, but, high enough to cause significant heat. Enough heat to melt the connectors inside the fuse block and the relay itself. Frankly, this is simply a poor design change. Older systems the pump cycles on and off to maintain the pressure and using a pressure regulator. Just be aware, it is your fuel pump that causes this fuse box problem to show up.

I think I'm having a very similar issue, same car same year. You mentioned there was a recall but I've searched my Vin and can't find any info on it. Could you give me more info? My relay looks just like that one. I've been told by two dealers that there was no recall.

No recall was issued for this problem. Just a TSB and some refunds on repairs from GM if the vehicle was under 10 years old.

@@christinabenham2244 actual problem was the PCM ,I bought it online, expensive, but solved the dying issue. Also must have it programmed by a mechanic. "Good advice"install yourself, then have mechanic program it! It'll save you another 300 or so.
