2008 Ford Edge 3.5L
Identifying a single cyl misfire using cyl drop test (on accessible cylinders), using a low amp probe to show ignition coil current ramps on a design where you cant access all the cylinders, and to verify computer control and driver integrity. Thanks for watching.

All too common same on the 3.0L. Ford recommends pcm replacement, all coils and even spark plugs on some years and engines to prevent a repeat occurrence. Great diagnostics you nailed it on the head!

FordTechMakuloco I have a 97 Ford Taurus 3.0l that doesn't have spark out of the coils and the MIL light doesn't show on the cluster. I did check the crankshaft sensor and I can see the signal, I also noticed that the injectors have pulse signal,but on the wires coming front the ECM to the coil I have 12 volts all the time and it never switches with the engine cranking. Could it be the ECM problem?

Just came here after watching the Paul Danner rv trip.. Seeing this issue is all to familiar now..All I do now is check for control on this misfires when I get one of those codes... Milans/mkz were the first to come out with that tsb then mkx/edge which said to replace all coils,pcm and plugs but after a while they only wanted you to replace affected cylnders .. Paul did a great job with you guys Wish you all the Best.. Happy Thanksgiving.

Thanks for the support. I figured the coil took out the pcm. I did hear that the drivers can be stuck on. Idk how true that is though. Unfortunately kept it low cost and replaced only the faulty coil and a used pcm. I still have the old one. Il look into repairing it if it happens again thanks for the tip.

Unfortunately the owner will be back and most likely with the same issue and Coil #2 will be the most likely failure. #1 and #2 seem to be affected by the heat that his captured under the intake. Hopefully when #2 goes it does not take out the PCM again. I took my 2008 Edge to 285,000 miles without a PCM or Coil failure. If you get a chance check out my YT dedicated entirely to the Ford Edge. Again you are great diagnostic technician.

I just found your channel after seeing you on scanner danner , great video . The plug gap gets excessive and over stresses the driver which makes the driver stick on and melts the coil . I had them holding a ground with the key off, got to at lease put new plugs in or the problem will reacur. The plug gap is usually huge. The last one I seen had 3 bad drivers with cylinder 5 stuck on with key off . 6 coils 6 plugs and pcm.

Does Ford know exactly why this problem is happening? Maybe next time when you get the same vehicle in again you could scope the secondary and see what the burn time is at. I'm wondering if the Engine is running leaner by this design and causing the coils to overheat.
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics 7 жыл бұрын
I have heard 2 theories. One is that these ign coils on the backside of the head get alot of the heat and it causes them to melt/short. The other is that the computer driver gets stuck on and it burns up the coil and the driver. Not too sure but that is what I heard

PLEASE HELP!.. I have a 2008 Lincoln MKX with the same problem cranks-up find but after about 30-35 min it starts running rough and shaking with engine light on and blinking. I have had it diagnosed twice the first time they said it was showing to check codes Po204, Po205, Po304, Po305, Po115 which they did but said all where find and [Po174 the system to lean] then the computer but they don't do that type of computer work. the second was the dealer and they diagnose it as being the #4 fuel injector is bad. and also recommend a tune-up. So, my question is should I just go ahead and replace the pcm and all the coils and spark plugs because after seeing your video and reading the comments that's what I'm thinking. THANKS FOR RESPONDING BACK.
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics 4 жыл бұрын
It looks like you have a few injector circuit faults and misfire faults that correspond with the injector faults. If your vehicle runs ok when you first start it, then your pcm is fine. I would be looking at the injectors. If this is the same design as the ford the. I would also do a tune up while it’s apart or Atleast get the old coils out and get the updated ones installed

@@PositiveLeadDiagnostics Hey, Thanks for responding I have already ordered the PCM, so I guess I'll have an extra one if I don't have to return it as a core. I also have the spark plugs and ignition coils coming in as well along with new fuel injectors. As I decided to go ahead and replace all the injectors. And yes, at first I was thinking that nothing was wrong with the PCM. And I just needed to replace that one fuel injector and do a tune-up. but after watching some videos on the subject were they replaced all spark plugs and ignition coils and it still ranked rough until they replaced the PCM. I was thinking of just being on the safe side. Thanks again for responding.

2008 Ford Edge AWD... OK. Need opinion.. Here goes.. I replaced #2 cylinder 3 times in a short time....The 3rd time I just switched it with #4 (2 spot is an old one now... 4 is the new one that car said burned out) It's a week later.. #2 misfire with the old pack now and #4 with the new pack is fine.. I think the problem is the #2 cylinder.maybe damaged inside maybe? All plugs are new. Can someone pinpoint exactly what's wrong?If that's enough info for an exact pinpoint answer that would be awesome.

Is it possible that the PCM shuts the coil off when it sets a code just like it does with the injectors? I mean i would have cleared the codes and then look for control to that coil before calling a PCM, and of course checked the coil
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics 7 жыл бұрын
Rassiel Coto I can't argue that but I have never seen the coil control be turned off due to a misfire. Injectors yes. But if that were the case on initial start up I would have had all 6 current ramps and then the pcm would have shut the control off after it detected the misfire. I don't know if i had the initial start up filmed when looking at the current ramps. But I never had control at any time. Clearing faults may not have been a bad idea but I don't think it would have helped me or changed the direction I was going anyways.
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics 7 жыл бұрын
Rassiel Coto another thing to is that my cylinder drop test I did on the front cylinders. I was unplugging coils and I never lost my control after creating those faults. If the pcm was shutting coil control off after a fault sets then when I plugged my coils back in I would have created more misfires
@edwinortiz982
@edwinortiz982 7 жыл бұрын
If you already replace the pcm and the board because I had the same problem before and first changed the pcm and returned the same failure they decided to change the board and I turned the same fault but if they disconnect the pcm for a few minutes in car starts but soon Time again gives the same fault

I replaced all coils and plugs after getting this issue. I started the car and it still misfires. The PCM is fried I think. What are the chances I fried the new coils by running it for a few minutes with a bad PCM?
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics 5 жыл бұрын
If the pcm was fried from the old coils. Whichever cylinders are misfiring, my guess would be the drivers in the pcm are what’s causing the misfires. So you would need to replace the pcm and get it programmed. The new coils should be ok. It would be an easy check to see if there is control to the coils on the misfiring cylinders

@@PositiveLeadDiagnostics Thanks for the info. There was something I was reading on a website saying not to run the car with bad PCM and good coils or you could reverse fry the coils again after replacing. Can some one explain how the PCM melts the coil. whats going on exactly ? I thought it was a case of a bad coil, ( original was melted ) I drop in a new coil still had the misfire . I had checked the plug but I'm thinking it must be bad too. so I pull the coil to put in a new plug and after less than 20 min run time the new coil was melted and smoking. So I got on line and found this video . Im not doubting that 6 plugs and coils and a computer is my fix I'm just trying to understand the mechanics behind if the driver in the computer is bad how the new coil melted Mine was 5 and 6. new coil fixed cylinder 6 but new coil 5 died a horrible death.

Why does the coil melt?
@stevet1754
@stevet1754 5 жыл бұрын
Spark gap gets to wide causing the coil packs to overheat due to the larger gap. Coil pops and back feeds voltage to the ecu blows the drivers for the coils then if bad enough supposedly can fry injectors.

It's only a 2 wire coil the only input is the ground control from the pcm driver. The coil melted and shorted which caused a huge amperage spike and burned up the computer
