The Mercury Mariner is the worst car I've driven in 2019. It is as if Ford didn't care.

I am so happy that everyone is hating on these cars. I drive a 2008 escape hybrid and it's a huge rolling pile of shit that refuses to die. Junkyards are full of parts, parts new are often somehow cheaper than the junkyards, I can buy wheel bearings for $11.99 on Rockauto, and the engine & transmission are actually indestructible and it gets great gas mileage for a vehicle its size to boot. You can literally buy them for less than $1000 with brake/suspension or light engine problems. They are so ez to work on it's hilarious. The interior is worse than described in this video but on the plus side you can always swap for some shitty "leather" seats from an upmodel escape or mariner if you have $40 in your pocket at PickNPull. I pay $10 for tires for these, literally every SUV uses this size so I can often get a nice matching set of 4 for about $50 all in. The hybrids also never break batteries unless the prius, and you can get good replacement batteries for $150. Toyota even built the transmissions on them! These cars are surprisingly tough. I actually got in a really, really bad accident where I spun out on the highway after hitting a water patch, drifted between trucks bouncing between them, before the car catching traction literally 90 degrees straight on to the concrete median and bashing into that at somewhere between 30-55 mph (I don't know because I think I slowed down to go sideways). The airbag went off in my face/arm and aside from a bad bruise on my hand that I thought was broken but wasn't I walked away from the accident. BTW - I still drive that car every day LOL. All I had to replace was the front metal bar thing, the bumper and maybe a headlight or two, a hood, fog lamps, one side suspension knuckle and I was good to go. I sourced most of this shit used from a junkyard and painted it with $1 homedepot spray paint and it looks great from 100'. In short I have done insane things with this vehicle that I would not try on lesser cars. I put 3500 lbs (39 bundles) of shingles in the back and rode it for about 100 miles; it took out both rear wheel bearings but it did make the journey. Later I towed about 2500-3500 in shingles as well just fine; it's amazing how well the hybrid will tow. I continued driving on those busted ass wheel bearings for like 15,000 miles/6 months or so and they made a LOT of noise but didn't explode and kill me on the highway amazingly. I have put over 50,000 miles on mine IN ONE YEAR and it's needed a ton of work but the parts are hilariously cheap like I said so it's not so bad if you're willing to get greasy. I think in terms of total cost of ownership for a car that you work on yourself there is probably nothing cheaper on the road when you combine cost to buy, repair, maintain, insure, tax, fuel, etc. I used to drive a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan before I bought this because these cars have a good reputation for reliability and the caravans DO NOT so I downgraded for a car that gets better MPG and is MUCH cheaper and easier to maintain while being more reliable. The dodge drove much nicer and had an interior that was only about 75% shit but I prefer cars that start every time and do not have nightmare systems on them. Long story short I will buy another one of these pieces of shit from someone's yard when I am somehow done with mine.

There are a ton of these around me (Escape/ Mariner/ Tribute), still in great shape. I've known people to rack up 150 to 200k on them easily with few issues. I kind of like the boxy simplicity of them. This poor thing obviously did time in the rust belt, and wasn't taken care of. A poorly maintained beat up 11 year old car with multiple check engine lights on is an unfair indictment of an entire model line. "Worst car that I drove in 2019" well yeah maybe but not all of them are. And- that's not a 2008. 2008-2012 (for the 3 models) incorporated several revisions. Particularly the dash, but the exterior lines are crisper more upgright. I have a Ford of that period (2010) and while they are not special, it has been surprisingly robust and reliable. Still looks great after 10 years. But then again, I take care of it.

Just so you know that Mariner is a first generation. 2008 is when the second generation came out as I literally own a 2nd gen 2008 Mercury Mariner and it isn’t this car. Still got the same duratec and shitty CD4E 4 speed (09-10 get a six speed) but its got a different interior and radio as well as a facelift on the outside. Maybe im biased but the leather in mine has held up well and the traditional mid 2000’s American plastic has yet deteriorate. The (different) radio also broke in it so I replaced it with an android head unit.

Karine M I had a 2008 Tribute and aside from it rusting like it came from Mars due to over salted Illinois roads, and the abs eventually failing like he mentioned, it was a solid family hauler that did well in bad weather and ran until I upgraded for a 2016 RAV4. If you don’t wanna spend a lot of money and can work on cars at least a little, and don’t live in the rust belt, then the Escape/Tribute will last you as long as you want it to. Now that I’m in Cali I still see a bunch in good condition, chugging away without issues.

I once drove an '08 tribute with the 2.3L 4 cylinder (4 speed automatic and had awd?) and never could get it to run like it was supposed to. When one part of it would be repaired or replaced, another part would promptly break in the worst way possible. List of broken bits that I can recall when I had it: -abs; stopped working at some point and never got repaired -transmission was on its way out -lower control arm bushing on passenger side went bad -tie rods were mismatched -idler pulley threads stripped out of engine so belt fell off -battery went bad -catalytic converter crumbled to dust shortly after car was bought (used) -windshield looked like a constellation of chips and cracks -weatherstripping around windshield let water drip in if it rained -front bumper started sagging on passenger side -trunk window nearly fell out after hinges rotted away (they ALL do that) -main interior dome light decided to snooze one day when door was opened -wheels were oxidizing badly -rear fenders existed at one time -tires nearly became racing slicks (would've made it more sporty like it wanted to be in the first place!) -ac worked on only two settings, then none at all -oil change was severely overdue (oil was low too, I wonder why?) -dipstick became a dipstick as it wouldn’t come out -engine had slight oil leak (ah, that's why!) -transmission also leaked -surprisingly none of the exterior lights burnt out-oh wait, that because the entire front of the car is three YEARS newer than the rest of it! -exhaust system rusted out several times (blame the salt) -At least the sun-bleached trim pieces stayed in place -plastic trim piece for rear passenger door flew off on freeway (forget I said that they stayed in place) Now for what got fixed (many broken bolts and rust showers later) -ac resistor (was the easiest part to replace on that car) -new tires (no more drifting for you! They were more off road oriented at least.) -new idler pulley (from Ford dealer! It knows it’s an escape underneath the badging) -battery was replaced -trunk window hinges were replaced with brand new ones -catalytic converter was replaced -exhaust system was fixed (never again, UGH!!!) -changed the oil and filter -removed bad o-ring from dipstick and did not replace it (the dipstick would get stuck again inevitably if o-ring was replaced) -that’s it Despite that small list of repairs the oil pump committed suicide and the engine grenaded after 156,842 miles (13 years) of misery while pulling into a Kroger parking lot. It threw a rod and cracked the block in several different areas. An engine swap would’ve been $4k and since the engine and tires were the only valuable bits… …it was sent to a junkyard while a new jeep renegade was driven home… … and less than a month later the front axle shaft had to be replaced because it was faulty. While the jeep is really nice (aside from the faulty axle shaft) and feels great to drive… I still missing driving that old money pit on wheels. Anybody feel the same way?

I once drove my aunt’s mercury mariner for a couple of days. When I stepped on the accelerator, it didn’t. When I stepped on the brake pedal, the feeling reminded me of riding an old huffy mountain bike with plastic brake levers, loose cables, and bald brake pads smushed against a dusty bike wheel. When I turned the steering wheel, I wasn’t sure exactly which direction the car would end up going or when it would start going in that direction. It felt heavy for its size, but not solid. The doors closed, but with a sound that made me less than confident they were securely latched. The interior was so uncomfortable, awkward, and cheap, and It shuddered and jarred over the potholed roads of south Louisiana in such a way that it called into question the fundamental premise that the mercury mariner was, as an automobile, an economical and convenient way to travel from point A to point B. It was perhaps the worst car I’ve ever driven, and I once owned a ‘98 Jeep Wrangler.

I had a 2008 Escape, and though it was unspectacular, it served me well in everything I needed it to do (namely, hauling bigger items that I would need to haul having bought my first house, and getting me around fairly easily during winter weather). It did have a mother of a blind spot, the steering felt like you had to have a death grip on the wheel because the slightest movement would send it in a direction that you didn't want it to go, and the seats--as mentioned--became so hard over time that you would feel as though you had been physically beaten up after a two or three hour trip. I can't say I hated it--I liked it for what it was--but I traded it for a Nissan Frontier, and the Frontier feels like a massive upgrade...so that should tell you something.

I bought a 2008 Mercury Mariner Premier 2WD with about 120,000 miles on the odometer. In the past year of ownership I've had to nearly rebuild the front end. It included ball joints, tie rod ends, sway bar links, both left and right, new break calipers, pads, and rotors. From the sound of the suspension, looks like I'll be doing even more work on it due to a clunking sound coming from the left front. So far I have spent nearly $2,000 on the front suspension.
