The thinking was that weights slowed one down n U became "muscle bound." Up to today there are many who believe that women shouldn't lift weights! After Caribbean athletes were recruited to American Colleges, the perspective changed. Now everyone weight trains. Did U notice the high school athletes at the Carifta games? It is apparent that the Ja high schoolers r lifting weights n that combined with natural talent make for superb performances. U needn't wonder how those U17 n U20 records keep falling. The circumstances r different now than they were 30, 35 yrs ago. Must have felt lonely for Merlene, she almost alone against the best Germans, Soviets n Americans. When Felix used to be world champion in 200m, VCB used to be Olympic champion. The moment (2011) VCB became world champion immediately 2012 Felix became Olympic champion.
