PLEASE DO NOT FOLLOW THIS REPAIR ADVICE!! Sorry Mike - the diagnosis advice is fine, but I just got done replacing my Saturn Aura XR starter (3.6 lt eng.) and starter is 100% accessible for removal from the bottom - it is up and to the driver side of the oil filter. Both bolts are fully accessible as well as plug and battery cable nut. PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE YOUR MANIFOLD TO PERFORM THIS TASK - totally unnecessary- this was just 10% harder than an oil change and is definitely a DIY on this car and motor! Heading back to Advanced Auto to return the manifold gasket I bought and thankfully did not need!

I want to upgrade the big 3, I do t have all the tools to do this. Does the gaskets need to replaced also when removed? Will it hurt anything at all to just leave the old 10 gauge wire that runs from my alternator to the starter? The lead goes from there to the battery - starter --> to alternator.

This is good for the 3.6L. For the 3.5L, I'd recommend another video. The other video is the procedure to replace the oil pressure sensor, but you have to remove the starter to get to that sensor. So it has great instructions for it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJ-zaXZtqplmrNU

Nice video Mike. Question for you: My 2007 Aura (3.6 liter) is making a weird noise when trying to start. I thought maybe starter at first (like if it's not engaging the flywheel). When trying to crank the engine I can see the drive belt turning so I assume the starter is turning the flywheel. I may be wrong though. Just would like your thought on that. Thanks

Jeff if the belts spin as your starter turns then the starter is working. These cars are known for timing chain issues. You could be hearing that. I just did i timing set on this car a few weeks ago. It inly has 110k

Mike's Garage - thanks for the answer. I thought maybe battery - jumped the car - still no start. It turns, sometimes acts like it’s about to start but never does. Still sounds a little off though. Timing chain. Ok - something to think about. This car has 129000

I changed my altinator and my battery is still dying or it getting drain of it's power. The battery light turns on what can be causing this to happen.

I have same car. Was idling kinda rough on occasion and when driving the car would shake quite a bit. Got it home and parked it. Next day wouldn't start at all. Have good battery all power works in car. But won't even attempt to start. Makes a single click and a beeping noise over and over any idea?

hey bro is there any way to tell the difference if the starter is bad or if its the Electronic Control Module, without any diagnostic equipment? or test light? Battery is good and cables tight and clean, no crank, no start. feel like its gotta be starter or relay / ECM

Not sure how different the 2007 is from the 08 but I did not have to pull the exhaust manifold. Pulled the knock sensor, unbolted the starter and took it out.

As I stated in the video. This is the factory service procedure on replacing the. That doesn't mean it's the only way to do it.

I have 2007 Aura.. I am gonna see what a knock sensor is and where to remove the starter. My car will turn on at times then wont when it gets a bit hot.. Somw one said it could be Ignition switch but UUUHHH, I will try started 1st. Thank you Ralph for the tip on removing started.

I have the same issue with my Saturn View. I was able to remove the two bolts holding the starter, but I can't even access the electrical connections without removing the exhaust manifold. Kinda sucks... Thanks for the video Mike!

I use repair videos for the sake of short cuts. I’m his is not one of them. You can access the starter easily from under the car. 20 minutes tops. This is way too much work and liability. You could break bolts.

Just take the cat off and grab it from the bottom
