Currently have one of these passenger side is making a knocking noise coming from what sounds like the timing cover with the crank and camshaft code . Gonna be taking it apart later hopefully I caught it in time and it didn’t catch the valve

Pretty scary stuff. This appears to be more of a 3.6L problem than a specific GM car. I was told by a cadillac tech that the timing chain should be replaced by 120k miles suggesting that the timing chain failure may be the result of possibly turning the timing chains into a wear item during the life of the vehicle like timing belts, only much more expensive to replace as timing chains on a properly maintained engine generally lasted the life of the engine. They were not a problem on the Northstar V8 with a similar design. Planned obsolescence anyone? I've done a lot of reading on this motor and have come to understand that it's like a Diva, it's not only high feature, it has to be treated like a high maintenance part. Forget the oil life monitor and change the oil every 3000 miles with full synthetic unless the monitor says sooner which I doubt will ever happen and never ever let it get too low. Starve this engine of oil and it's done. Interesting the noise and symptoms were mistaken as a rod knock. I doubt the engine would have run poorly from that until it was severe and even less set a code as that is a bearing clearance problem not measured by any sensor although the knock sensor might respond by reducing timing. What would likely happen before a code set if not addressed is a rod failure. I like shops that do the right thing, takes the pressure of knowing what's wrong with my car before taking it in for a repair. (Note, the timing chain tensioners are pressurized by oil, unless you broke the engine down and confirmed no rod bearing problem, I can see a bad bearing leading to this through low oil pressure and resulting low timing chain tension) Here's a heads up to you guys. My 08 CTS LLT motor had chronic P2177 & P2179 codes and none of the usual was the cause. Fuel pressure was good, ignition system top notch including the timing chains which were replaced after the codes set. The sensors were fine and there were no vacuum leaks. Short term trims worked normally and long term fuel trims gave the appearance of a vacuum leak, high (37) at idle and would start to trend downward when the rpm was raised above 1000 rpm. Intermittent stumble on throttle tip in, occasional oscillating idle especially during cold start and warm up. If the codes were cleared the first start following immediately after would result in misfires and pops in the intake and exhaust until the PCM corrected for it. I took the car to the dealership and they couldn't figure it out. I narrowed it down to the fuel injectors and the PCM as everything else checked out. After the injectors were replaced, long term trims settled at -7. The car runs like a champ now. Not sure why the injectors seemed to clog as a set but the car has a lot of hwy miles 179k now and other similar complaints I found in searches nearly all of which had no definitive solution had similar characteristics, greater than 14k annual mileage avg. The one Cadillac I read about with the codes was an 09 CTS and both codes apparently set at the same time on a well maintained and babied car according to the owner, who had also taken the car to the dealer without success. Not sure if it was resolved before the car went into limp mode which is where it was heading. My car was also well maintained. Not sure if a routine fuel additive will help prevent this as I noticed a brownish carbon build up in the injector ports in the cylinder head similar to what a dirt dauber wasp nest looks like with a hole in it. Hope that helps

It’s the pcv valve sucking oil by design. There’s an updated intake manifold gasket that cuts the amount of air/oil that sucks through the system.

I have a 2009 cts with the direct injection and it did fall under the VIN for that coverage and GM still won't cover the cost. Mine has 63k miles. They put spacers on the cam shafts and new chains but still too much play. I need a new head on driver's side. $4300. They are willing to cover cost of new chains though! My last caddy. I've owned 8.

Sorry this is so long, it's copied from caddy forum i used........... I had the p0008 on my 2010 CTS4. I changed the sensor for bank 1 along with the solenoid actuator. The p0008 is gone, p0342 is now on the CEL. The car did not start until several long attempts. The sensor for the cam was bad and now has a full 12 volt load going to it and no more p0008. Ohms test shows the old sensor defective. The solenoid actuator was not bad but replaced with a new AC Delco part. I show 9 volts input at key on. And 2 volts when running. I also tried the old actuator with the same results. Both actuators show good with ohms result test. The battery has a full charge, Alt putting 14 volts when running. What would make the p0342 voltage drop? If i clear the code it reappears at the next start up. I'm stumped here, any help appreciated. The only odd issue was the long start up of several attempts before it ran. Any ideas? Thanks.

@@CoopersAutomotiveRepair Yeah I have a similar problem after doing my timing chains three times and being certain that my timing marks were aligned and I didn't turn it over until I cranked it several times and let oil inject into the tensioners to avoid skipping a tooth. I still have a crankshaft correlation code and it looked like the camshaft phaser might have been off, but I used the tools for proper alignment and all the marks lined up so there does not seem to be any way the timing can be off?

If you can’t afford a brand new Cadillac under warranty that you will trade in after two years do not buy a Cadillac. Ever since the nineties they are ticking time bombs due to poor engine design. It’s a shame because the bodies and interiors will hold up great. They will have little value though since every other Caddy has a blown or poor running engine.

that is bullshit, you buy a car like a caddy you should not have to worry that your engine will drop out at 30k, and the money to fix a problem that GM should pay, that customer should file a law suit and get back triple the money, I would, I believe that car should be classified as a lemon.

I purchased a 2008 Cadillac sts with only 59000 miles on it. One previous owner who ive contacted and he left me every warranty/log/receipt you could imagine. he was a disabled vet and clearly didnt drive it much. Only owner ever. I purchased it in February of 2017. Got royally screwed on the warranty I purchased. I was supposed to receive the best warranty possible (due to the yr of the car) so low n behold, i received my paperwork via mail from the warranty co. & I only have the silver pckg. Per my paperwork. Which doesnt cover a whole lot. Ive taken off work many days to basically chase my tail. I already paid alot more $ for only 2 yrs or 25000 miles and to find out i didnt receive what i paid for (cash at that) im beyond livid, still. Ive had nothing but horrible luck as far as even a simple tow due to i needed a new battery for some reason.i was stuck in a storm with a phone dying & they never showed up or answered calls lol. I should have went w/ my car insurance tow service. The 2nd tow co. did show at 530 pm and my call was made at 8 am. Anyways apparently im stuck dealing with a bunch of monkeys until this car is paid off and sold. So this is my 1st actual issue. So my engine light came on & i got it diagnosed. Code p0021 was the verdict. Camshaft positioning sensor bank 2. The place i was at added 1 qt of oil, and topped coolant off and reset my chk. Engine lt. I haven't driven it but 10 miles and that was to get hm. But the place i went to seems to think it will come back on. It hasnt died on me, or not started (yet) and im not pretty sure their advice was incorrect in regards to advising me to drive it to see if the light comes back on, which could be up to 100 mls. Lol. Im not a mechanic, but i am smart enough to know not to drive 100 mls unless it has been ruled out that the sensor isnt the issue and it was bc i needed a qt of oil or something like that. Im a female so everyone takes advantage of that and assumes they can REALLY get over on me. But i happen to have an uncle whos a mechanic and my dad knows quit a bit as well.. unfortunately theyre out of state for the time being.so this place tells me to install the 45$ sensor i previously priced (which i kept that info to myself) would be a 3 hr job if all went well and if i brought my own part i was looking at 400$. Haha. If i could jack my car up, i could probably install it. It looks to me like if people can make a video as they install these sensors, then it cant be a 3 hr job or too difficult. So after viewing this video, i realized at O'Reilly's said that sensor is an extremely common issue for gm vehicles. So this explains why. I guess my ? Is: what should i do as far as driving it? Would it be ok to drive to a different dealership about 20 mins away? Is there an easy way i can test it to confirm that's the actual problem? I viewed a video that you can lightly tap it and if it dies, thats it. Should i contact someone way higher ( not these dealerships) and discuss the recall. Which doesnt come up using my vin on the gm website so i just need someone honest to direct me and u seem like u fit that. And thats rare. So i thank u for taking time out of your busy day to be honest & help others. U never see that anymore it seems like. I wish your shop was near me..id be there. But thanks again. Its much appreciated. PLEASE HELP!

GM never wants to hold up there end when you call with a recall. I have a Cadillac cts 2006 3.6L all I have is problems and dropped way to much $ in it. Why because every time I call GM my cars not part of the recall.

For those who don't know if this ever happens again, try disconnecting your battery for a few seconds first and reconnecting it again instead of calling an expensive tow truck, this has happened several times to me and that's how remedied it but there is some info around about the TP sensor being part of the problem, so give it a try instead of expensive towing and at least you can get back home but I drive it to work anyway, can't miss work and I drive 2 hours one way to work, in fact, I work in Coopers automotive neighborhood in St. Pete and come from the central part of the state but also work around Clearwater.
