i had replaced the column lock (linkage from keyswitch to electronic controller) and the electronic controller. The key cylinder was worn out, and i had hoped to pry off the cylinder cap to do some grinding inside the key cylinder sleeve to allow over rotating the key, but i couldnt get that cap off. so i fell back to your method and crimped in a momentary switch as you outlined. the wires needed were the top and bottom wire on the harness plug on that side of the column. works great, a non-destructive fix. thank you.

This worked so easy! I did not cut the wires at all but just used a blue “splicer”. Seriously took me 30 minutes and starts like a charm! Switch was $8. Splicers were $3. $11 total and found it just in time to cancel the ignition module I had ordered on Amazon for $100
@truthvigilante42632 жыл бұрын
So that’s literally all you needed? Switch and splicers? I hope I can figure out how to put the wires together I know nothing about wiring and don’t feel very confident 😭 feel like it might be a waste of money for me or I might make it worse because I’m too dumb. How’s it been holding up is it still working for you? Should I disconnect the batter before messing with the wires?

Thank you so much! For someone with very limited auto/electrical experience, I was able to make this work. How you do the pinch splice
@Uneke9 ай бұрын
The problem isn’t the switch either. So you’d have bought a new one for 400 and not fixed it. The collar around the steering column is the problem (it has the switch behind the ignition). The ignition has a piece that is rectangular and sticks out which goes into a rectangular hole on the switch. The hole widens and wears out. I went to a junkyard to get a new collar (2k for it new!) but they use breakaway bolts to fasten it and I couldn’t grind (no cutting tools at this junkyard). So I did this and haven’t looked back lol

Hey Harry this was great help, the start button works like a charm now! If you have a Cashapp or Venmo, I'd be more than happy to donate for the help! Also I drive a manual escape, so I'd like to mention that touching the orange and blue wires after cutting them didn't do anything, the car wasn't starting. It wasn't even entering the Accessory mode where the lights on the dash would light up. I realized with some fiddling, that touching the cut blue wire to the "uncut" orange wire started the starter. And I was even able to enter the accessory mode with the key. So for anyone else with this problem, if you already cut the orange wire, just "uncut" it with some crimping connectors and a nut and bolt. And with another crimping connector you can make a t splice for the orange wire and connect it to the button. For the blue wire you can just add a crimping connector and connect to the button. Hope that helps!

Thanks! It works like a charm for me now! I ended up cutting the blue and white wires and the orange and white wire. I tied the orange wires back together and when I touched them with the blue and white wire coming FROM the engine, it worked! I connected the tied ends of the orange wire to a butt connector, then to a 14 gauge wire. I took the blue wire, coming from the engine, and connected it to a butt connector to a different 14 gauge wire. Those 2 wires I tied into a switch. Taped everything up and now it's working great

OK I had the same idea and had bought the switch from Auto Zone like 7 bucks. I got all kinds of different wiring codes for my 08 xlt. In the end used blue with white stripe and blue with red stripe. Its on the left side not part of that four wire loom going down to the switch. I used red scotch locks to attach to factory wires. Hard to find the exact spot to put the switch but a ream helped me out. I did it in 2.5 hours but some one with a sharper mind and vision could knock it out much faster. Remember this wire code is for a 08 made in the fall of 07. 2.3 motor Oh to get the cover apart I used a kitchen knife and came apart quite easily. Oh that pesky 5.5 mm socket was three bucks at home depot. Lots of info in the comments to guide you through this. Happy motoring.

Can you explain a little bit more where you cut those wires to splice in the switch?
@michaelpollak34355 жыл бұрын
dont even need to cut wires on the car. use pinch splicers to tie in with approx 6" leads and attach: 1 wire to the blue and 1 wire to the pink. i tied in 10 amp fuses to the added wires then attached the push button with about 18" lead. installed in dash. 1/2 hour. $5 total cost (and have left over supplies for the future). dealer cost: $180 to run a "diagnostic test" (that will NOT code this problem anyway) $45 for a transponder (that you do not need). $125 for an ignition actuator (that you are bypassing), $75 for an ignition switch (that you do not need), $180 to recode all this shit, $200 for two new keys (that you do not need, unless you want lots of extras) and 1 hour labor (@ $180 an hour) for grins) = close to a grand. well, a little time, 1 pliers, 4" black tape, 2 blue splice connectors, 2 pink butt connectors, 1 push button switch and, "blammo" ... what's really nice is you do not disable your pats !!! no key no start no run no nada. your new procedure is: put key in ignition, turn to on, push the button, drive away. thieves still wont like it, still need the key !!!

He didn't cut any wire. I did by mistake but all I did was put all 3 ends together and it's worked. If you cut the white and orange, put they and the 14 gauge wire together. Same with the white and blue and connect to either side on the button. Doesn't have to be in any order. Either side works. I learned the hard way so I try to make it easy for everyone else. Not hard and all!!

This is actually a very good fix. Button can be located anywhere you want.. now, don't get a tractor switch, they are hard to push and made to carry a lot of electricity, go to the auto store, get a light duty momentary button, it is easier to push. Because all your doing is telling the computer to start the engine, not actually engaging the starter.
