I would usually replace the whole assembly but it was sunday afternoon when mine failed and i needed to get to work next day. I left the button though. I kind of like it.

Glad it helped! I have another video showing how to replace the whole ignition assembly without removing the steering wheel if you decide to. It night also just be the little switch mecanism on left side where the wires clip to. Sometimes those go bad. [e-mail] if you need any follow up.

Tried this on my girlfriends 2012 escape. Car went into anti theft mode so I tried to jump the starter relay and ended up frying the ECM 😂. Great video, I just messed up bad

I would say a new ignition assembly would be an option if you decide the button is a hassle. I did a video about that too, without removing steering wheel.

I still use my button. If i ever sell it i will put a new switch in, but ill probably keep it until it dies. At 180k miles, my 08 has 350k.

Looks promising Daryl. Do you know if other fords, like a focus would work the same way? I've been doing this DIY fix involving wrapping electrical tape around the lock cylinder and it works for a while. But your fix would be pretty much permanent, it seems. Thanks for taking the time to help people!

Yes. Did it temporarily on a focus. Its really not that hard to change the whole assembly though. Less than $75 aftermarket part. Maybe 90 minutes first time to do it. Dont pull the air bag or steering wheel.

Yes will be same. Actually you can replace whole assembly yourself without removing steering wheel. If ypu wanted to go that way. Please reavh out if you have any questions

So I did this and the two wires touched the metal plate and caused a little spark now I don’t get accessory dash light or anything won’t even beep when I put the key in checked all fuses and nothing any idea what it could be I’m thinking maybe starter switch anything else you can help me with before I make the purchase

Check all of the fuses under dash and under hood? If okay remove battery cable for 5 minutes and see if that resets it. Is it possible you got the wrong wires?

I've been having this problem with my 2011 Escape for about a year now. It was getting really hard to start with the key, but now it doesn't want to at all. This looks relatively simple, but I've never messed around with any wires and I'm so afraid I'm gonna mess something up. I've never used those little blue splicers either, pretty simple?

It is. You could just buy the switch assembly and do it right, no cutting. Sometimes you need to replace the whole ignition assembly and thats a lot more involved.

No, you need a programmed key, turned to the run position. This just bypasses the actual switch on left side of the assembly.

I think so, but not directly. It is my understang that they go through the powertrain control module which sends a signal to the starter relay and completes the ground circuit. The 2 wires i used probably both go to the PCM.

I did this without using a switch, just welded a wire from blue/white wire to white/orange wire and that's it. You can use your car like normal.

I don't see how that would work. The push button makes 3:51 a short connection to engage the starter the wire would have continues starter.

What about bypassing the key entirely. I do derby cars and want to go keyless. I have busted 2 keys off in ignition with my knee during shows. I just want to completely set up push button and toggle. To start the car without the need for a key.

You would have to have some sort of way to bypass the P ATS system but I don't know how or if that's possible

Thats a big problem. You need those wires to energize the system, to read an transmit the key code, etc.

Do the dash lights come on when you turn key? Is it regular or a hybrid? It could be the starter relay in fuseblock under hood. Look in owners manual to see whi h one it is and swap it with one from a different location to see if it turns over Could be a bad starter too.

I did it. Now my radio speakers don't work and my shifter to engage to drive is getting stuck and won't allow me to drive. Is this because I did it wrong.

Yes. Either wrong wires, or your key switch is bad and not powering everything up.

If it is a true switch the speaker issue is because the circuit was left closed. Make sure to throw the switch again after the vehicle is started (to open circuit again).

I have 2008 Mercury Mariner that has a ignition bypass installed. Today I went to have a remote starter installed at Bestbuy. Install could not be installed when they disconnect the bypass wire, the truck started but did not go in gear. Do have any idea why this would happen? Thanks

A toggle should work if you flip it on then off quickly

Honestly, if you have time to do it, I recommend just replacing the switch on left side of column. If that doesn't fix the problem then replace entire key switch assembly. But, what were symptoms that caused you to install the switch?

Don't drill a hole so anyone can steal the car on the top.. Affix it under the dash and uI only know it's there.

This is for when the ignition switch wears out. THEY ALL DO. You need to put key in, then turn it on before you push button. Replacement switch assembly is preferred, but this works if it fails when you cant get a replacement.
