It's getting the exhaust manifolds replaced soon, and I'm planning on having the timing chains, phasers guides, etc. replaced as well as the roller followers. Should I replace the lifters at the same time ? Is it necessary? Thank you for your time

Had a similar thing with our 2010 Fusion. After refueling the car would start but run rough and then quit. Took it to the dealership and paid a $100 diagnostic fee but they couldn’t figure it out. I found your earlier video on this, changed the valve in like 10 minutes and never had the problem again. Thanks Brian.

2013 Edge. Stumbled on to this video and immediately recognized it was what was going on with my own car. Hard to start after filling and iRPM’s while idling being pulled down two or three hundred rpm every 7-10 seconds or so after it finally starts running. Looks like I’ll be able to avoid that ridiculous diagnostic fee. Sounds like a simple fix. THANKS!!!

My 2011 F150 did this to me at the gas station. I had just bought the truck used, and of course it had about 3 gallons of gas in it. Filled the tank, and it wouldn’t start. Talk about feeling dread. Found the fix video on Brian’s KZbin channel. I actually had luck removing mine, spraying carb cleaner into the vacuum port, then aerokroil spray, shook it up a bunch and re- installed it. It has been working fine for 3+ years now.

Many years in the past I was working picking potatoes. The farm had 2 trucks with in-cab tanks. On had a vented gas cap, the other non-vented. You can guess what happened. Somehow the caps were mixed. The tank that was to have the vented cap imploded violently, with great noise. After everyone calmed down from their heart attacks it took awhile to calm down at get back to work. P.S. The old grizzled mechanic drained the fuel, letting it sit draining for 5 or so minutes, turned the tank upright and tossed a match into it. We damn near killed him. But the tank was sort of back in shape. Guess he had done this a few times.

Ford keeps coming up with astounding failure modes on "redesigned and improved" parts, but at least we get the benefit of watching Brian's awesome videos to help us out with problems few other people can diagnose. That's one of the weirdest things I've ever seen, and THANK YOU for the video. I believe that even my 2010 Escape Hybrid Limited (104,000 miles) has the same/similar EVAP setup as that Focus. I'll be keeping my eye on it for sure even though I haven't encountered this problem yet, I guess it's just a matter of time. By the way Brian you are one of the VERY few people on Earth who made videos about the 2005-2012 Escape Hybrid and they have saved me money and answered a lot of questions. The fun ones are when the vent valve plugs up and it's difficult to refuel. Pushing on the valve stem under the green cap in the engine compartment helped as a temp way during refueling.

Regarding my 2012 Ford Focus, at 165,000 miles, I am on my third purge valve; easy enough to swap out in a matter of minutes, but more so annoying at having to spend the extra money for those poorly designed parts (I think my latest one is on it's third revision, or so). About six months ago, I also had to swap out my charcoal cannister since I was having the dreaded gas pump click-off every half-gallon or so of refueling. That was a chore since it was an extreme PITA to get the factory spring clips off!!

Had this failure on my 2010 Crown Vic about 4 years ago and thank goodness for KZbin, found a lot of fokes with the same problem and replaced the Purge valve, saved a lot of Diag money.

Similar problem on my 2009 F150. Following some of Brian’s videos I was afraid it was the timing cams going bad. I think I will at least try the canister purge valve first. I’ve had a couple hard starts, 1450 codes, and a couple dies at hot idle. Worth a shot anyway.

Thanks for making this video! Our 2015 Edge. Still has way less than 100k miles on it. For a long time the vehicle would stumble, act like it wanted to stall upon start up after refueling. No CEL. Finally got a light. #1450 code. After interrogating ( not recommended) the wife, she was topping/ rounding up instead of just stopping when pump handle bangs off. Bought the Vapor Canister, have yet to install it. Now thinking I shall get the Valve and change it out also.

I'ver recently bought a 2010 Fusion and a 2010 Milan, both with the 2.5 Duratec They've revised the purge valve no less than 7 times, so I just preventatively replaced both of them, with a Motorcraft part $25 saved me a whole lot of aggravation and inconvenience

I have this problem currently on my 2017 Escape. I have it after putting ANY amount of fuel in the tank, and I’m also getting the stall-outs intermittently after starting while I’m driving on the road. When it happens, I can hear the fuel pump overworking. I’m going to replace this. Thanks for posting this!! 👍🏻

LoL my 2017 ford escape 1.5L ecoboost just had this problem at 110k miles. Can't start the engine every time after refueling, P1450 P2196 code. Just ordered parts and hopefully will get it fixed soon to pass the emission test. Hope yours is fixed.

The good old purge valve. I used to take care of police emergency vehicles and the Taurus and explorer are prone to the check fuel inlet message display. 100% of the time it was the purge valve.

Had similar issues in my 13 focus. Was told it was 'dirty fuel'. Always ran a bit rough after a refill. After driving for a while, all was fine. Until the next refill. Had the symptom of the 'concave'/deformed gas tank too.

There is also an intermittent ticking sound that starts emanating from the engine bay as an early failure sign. I have a 2016 Focus myself and have it custom tuned. My tuner picked up on it throwing my fuel ratio off. RPM will also rise with the ticking and then drop off afterwards. You get maybe a year or two with a new purge valve before it starts doing it again. My replacement part started doing it too but no stalling yet.

My company had a Chevy Sonic, and after refueling it would hard start, and sound a gun going off once started. The purge valve was leaking fumes into the intake causing the problem. They got rid of it instead of fixing it.

Have a low mileage (just 50K) 2013 Fusion, so far, no fueling problems. On the other hand, my 2006 Mustang with (53K) has very occasionally had fueling problems in the 3 years I have owned it. Sometimes it will not allow you to fill the tank. Every so often I use a fuel system cleaner in the Mustang.

I had an escape come in complaining about a noise one time. After it idled for a minute or so it would start making a loud wet fact noise 😆. Figured out the purge valve was stuck open and pulling vacuum through the capless filler neck. Funniest thing I've ever seen.

The late 80’s -90’s fuel pump problem was because people would run their tanks below 1/4 left. The pump relied on the fuel to keep them cool. Constantly going below a 1/4 would cause them to burn up 1) due to heat and 2) due to contamination from the sediment in the tank. And let not even talk about the dual tanks where the pumps would return to the wrong tank and over fill them LOL. Installed so many recall kits in like 93’ or 94’ for that

I can’t remember if the Vic’s inertia switch is in the right front kick panel or rear trunk for certain, but I’m thinking it was the front panel. Tow truck driver use to trip them in mall parking lots to get extra tow jobs around LOL

My 2018 Focus ST had a recall because of this issue. I never had a problem because I usually keep it at 3/4 of a tank or higher. $15 -17 of prem once a month and I'm good, LoL. I did take it in and have the recall procedure done though just to be safe. I wish you would have shown where that valve is mounted as I never quite figured out where to look for it.

Wife just came home from work and said her engine light was on in her 2012 focus, scanned it and it's a P144A Google and KZbin all said to change the canister purge valve, she hasn't had any drivability issues yet.

Had my 2014 F150 5.0 start getting erratic fuel tank readings and eventually the hard start at fueling got bad enough I wouldn't shut the truck off during fueling. New canister purge valve and I haven't had a single issue at all.

Hello long time viewer. I have a 2012 F150 5.0 6R80 trans. I got 153k miles on it and for some reason the transmission refuses to go into overdrive and the trans humms loud from 3rd to 4th gear. It used to fly and shift great now it hardly gets out of its way.

This is the only malfunction my Focus ST has had in 100k miles. the OEM valve are impossible to find. i had to buy a Chinese made valve "repair kit", vs the OEM Bosch assembly, with the hoses and fitting

Talk about lucky. I just started getting this problem on my 2011 Ford Fusion v4 literally out of nowhere. Same P1450 code and same dying after fueling up. It also runs really rough on the highway occasionally if the gas tank is too low. Thought it was the fuel filler neck but I've religiously kept a cap on it and clean it and grease the pawls on it every couple of months. Guess I got a new canister purge valve to buy. Thanks my man. I assume you recommend the Ford OEM right or is there another part no. or brand I should look for?

Sometimes they will but only after the tank has almost completely deformed. At speed it sounds like a moaning coming from the fill area. At lower speeds it sounds like a tapping noise.

I have a 2011 Ford edge limited with the 3.5. I’ve had this vehicle since 2016. I’m gonna guess about three years ago. I went to get in my vehicle to come home after a hard days work and it rolled over several times before it started. If I did start and it took a minute to straighten itself out. It’s been really sporadic but from time to time it does that. It’s progressively getting worse. It seems like when it’s nice and warm outside when it does it the most. For the last three months it’s got to wear. It won’t start. If I walk away and come back four or 56 hours later, it usually starts. Does anyone know what this could possibly be? My Ford garage wants $135 just diagnose the problem $135 plus parts.
