2009 Nissan Altima 2.5 CVT weak acceleration? Symptoms p1778 code

2009 Nissan Altima cvt has very weak acceleration almost as if the car is in limp mode. Going up hills it has a particularly difficult time, but when I rev the engine in neutral or park it revs fine. I’m hoping this is a simple stepper motor or valve body job but I might have to replace the transmission. If you have had similar problems please let me know I will be updating this video and answering comments once I figure this out.

Budget Drift lmfao I hope you bought the new step motor new. I just change mine 08 Altima 2.5s for a1778. I’m struggling went from 20 sec to now a 6 sec delay on acceleration no more check engine light also I change the secret filter in the trans runs like new on highway just the 6-7 sec delay when at a red light is killing me might be a evac leak somewhere omg fuck Nissan!!!! I change the rubber tube from the air filter the the throttle. The air filter, bat and alternator starter tested good, put a new gas cap now I think it might be bc the 1 spark plug is oil wet from a leak from the gasket I hope it’s that if not I’m changing the fuel pump which has the fuel filter in it I hope it fixes if not I’m done with this car

Hey guys. I fixed my CVT! Sadly it was the torque converter than was done. Many have my issue and changed things and no progress. It’s more likely the torque converter. It will be an expensive job and repair if you let someone else do it for you. I bought a used Transmission from a junkyard for $129 and changed the CVT myself which took 6 hours and $100 on fluids. ***** UPDATE 1/6/20 ***** replaced the valve body and stepper motor at the same time back in June and the issue has not returned. The valvebody and stepper motor were $50 from a junkyard so who knows how long it will last.

Gustavo Villa-Cruz this is only an issue for the auto CVT cars. If yours is manual then it’s probably a misfire or dead fuel pump

It's a Step Motor in the transmission - "Kill Code P1778" It is happening in my 2012 Altima SR with 196,000. Nissan says replace the tranny. Black market good mechanics say buy a $30 Step motor. Works great and saves you great money!!!!!

@@budgetdrift6403 I have seen a catastrophic failure! The 423 pieces of the push belt were blown all over the inside of someone's tranny on a a video I watched. So then I watched a man assemble all 24 bands and 399 pieces that assembled the drive belt. I have learned A LOT about it since I can't drive. lol A black market mechanic would make a fortune repairing these things for people!!!!! It's all what you know in life and I glad YOU knew!!! :)

If anyone is wondering, I fixed the issue by replacing the CVT valve body. The part cost $50 at a junk yard and I used this video to install it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHObgJuVpd-lrpo if I had to add one thing it would be to number the bolts with a sharpie when your removing them so you know which bolts go where. Also, FUCK NISSAN for quoting me $3000 to repair the transmission and claiming that the valve body couldn’t be replaced. Good luck and I hope this helped!

Mine was going into limp mode on a long trip. I had just changed the fluid prior to the trip and used Idemetsu fluid. Mine is def related to the fluid. I'm going to replace the step motor and change to the official Nissan CVT fluid and I'm hoping that'll fix it. I'll update when I can.

I watched a video that said to unclip it while the car is running and if it stays running the sensor is bad and that's what happened when I did it. Dods that sound right? You should put a half quart of fluid in it drive it if it's accelerates normally for a bit it's your fluid the new fluid will temporarily lubricate the transmission before mixing with the old fluid I had a similar problem with my car changed tranny fluid had the worst symptoms 4-7 rpm around curves no acceleration turns out i didn't add enough fluid and the filter wasn't catching nothing but air when turning because the fluid shifts to one side if it's away from the filter it causes hard slipping & once the fluid settles it catches I saved it from myself luckily

Cvt can’t stand heat at all!! When it’s hot the rpms will rise up while at a constant speed and make a whining noise! Can’t a trans cooler and change the fluid . Fluid is like $50 and cooler for a heavy duty is $70 ish and filter is around 20 with a new gasket included for the transmission pan

Hey y'all, needing some help here. I have a Nissan Altima coupe 2010 cvt 2.5. Recently it's been acting up, whenever I come to a halt my car acts like it's not getting enough gas and drops rev a little. Secondly, whenever I start the car and press the accelerator pedal I hear a whining noise along with the engine rev. In addition, there are times when I press the pedal all the way down and I get low engine response. I do this in park and neutral. I've tried it in gear and it revs and moves slowly. It cuts in and out especially when I turn off and turn on the vehicle. I'm getting the same code everyone is getting about the stepper motor. I was driving one day and the car would not accelerate and when it did it sounded like it was moving to a higher gear and stuck at about 2000 rpms till I got home. I'm not sure if because of a bad engine torque mount why it's messing with my throttle or some sensor. I literally don't know what to do and I'm contemplating selling my baby for $1000. Any information helps not just me but others!

If you got the stepper motor code you can replace that for around $50. I had the same issue and it’s been about 6 months since I replaced the stepper motor and it’s still going strong no issues whatsoever

Had problem with some car. Don't remember code. Would it go "overdrive." Would only go to about 2500 rpm then drop to "lower gear" had at reputable trans shop said trans all good must be engine thing. It would only get about 17 mpg. I worked on suspected intake leak, new plugs and boots, leaking oil into plug tubes. Bit of sealer there, I figured throttle body was acting punky. After all that better and better mileage up to 21 mpg. Then exhaust gasket leak. Exhaust shop said replace cats. I removed center pipe. Bored out 2nd cat and new donut gasket. Ran great in goes to 85 easy(closed practice course😉) . Later I will do manifold cat and MAF (GOT MAF CODE) Prior to opening clogged cat

Lol that's funny "bad alternator" sounds like someone doesn't know anything about cars, for 1 if it was the alternator, the battery light and brake light would be on, maybe abs, the #1 sign you have an alternator issue is when the battery light turns on, has nothing to do with the cvt, i have heard of a bad battery that can still crank and run the motor, but a bad battery causing problems with control modules such as transmission control module etc, even old dirty coolant can produce electrical charges and making computers go wonky, but glad you found your issue and fixed it

mike price, I found found it was the CVT torque converter. I ended up replacing the transmission myself for $129+$100 in fluids and lots of elbow grease. Took 6 hrs but it was worth it

I got a 2021 last year with 55k on it for a real good deal. But at about 68k it wouldn’t want to accelerate at all then all of a sudden it would just take off like a damn rocket, almost rear ended someone on account of it… and at about 1.5 to right under 2k Rpm it would just rumble and shudder and shake. It’s Common problem in this year model. It has to be the manufactures fault and the never did a recall. A lot mechanics said that problem was from the plant. The 09 maximas don’t have the same malfunction. Iam sure the dealer I got mine from knew about the Issue.

I would still take it to get a diagnostic scan, your car can save check engine codes in the computer even if the light is not on. And $600 is a fair price for a shop to replace the valve body and stepper motor.

Hey i am having the same problem with my 2010 Nissan altima. But when this happens i put the car in manual mode and starts working fine. Putting back to automatic mode brings back the problem. I was reading the repair manual for this transmission and under code p1778, which my car has given, the early steps are to check stepper motor resistance by using ohm meter. I did that the readings were 34 (N= aprox 30). According to the repair manual if the resistance is there then TCM is bad. Any suggestions what should I do?

Honestly I would still replace the stepper motor it’s only like $15 and a TCM would be a lot more. Also if it means anything I got the same p1778 code and after replacing the stepper motor and valve body it fixed the problem

Update, I replaced the step motor and it did not change anything. Car behaved similar. What I noticed is that it is the temperature that makes it worse. Had cold weather(32-33F) two days and i had almost no problem. So I decided to add an after market cooler. Now it has made a huge difference. I just installed it today and ran my car proper at high rpms and in manual mode to see how it goes. Even though today the outside temperature was above 50s, it didn’t enter in limbo mode. However it did show slight hesitation occasionally but just for 2-3 seconds. I don’t know how it will behave in summers. Might add bigger cooler. Idk what can be done more.

@@Ricc0718 yes , I had to buy a used transmission for 1200$ and then pay 900$ to have it installed. Mine wasent the stepper motor. The belt pulleys all were messed up. Lots of metal in the bottom pan in the magnets

Any1 suggest ETB my 03 Altima s 2.5L fell into failsafe mode which is what that looks like… electronic throttle body - Attempt a relearn…. Then replace…+relearn.. it’s probably the whole etb. Mayb u can clean it first & try it. But usually the electronic part of it goes bad & it doesn’t communicate or function properly with the Brains of the car. Good luck - btw there really easy to install & turorial on YT for ETB relearn. Youhll have the try it Mayb 2 times to get it right. Physically Write down the steps then go try it, don’t attempt as watching the YT video. Good luck

Bro my car is doing the same thing. I was on the highway going 80 the all of a sudden couldn't accelerate and would pedal to medal and nothing would happen. Then pulled over, turn my car on, I worked fine but with the check engine light on. But now when I accelerate there's a loud clicking noise. Also when I checked my oil it was extremely low like not even reading on the dip. Put about 2 quartz in and it was still black but full. Any suggestions? This all happened today out of nowhere btw

similar problem - but really only after about an hour worth of driving in hotter temps. car will go into manual mode but cannot shift. then put it back in auto mode and it seems to want to stay in 6th "gear". On the freeway it just sort of dogs, still does the speed limit but that's about it - dont try to step on it. it wont go. On the exit when you come to a full stop and then try to go it is like you are trying to start going in 6th "gear"

Hey! I’m having this issue with my 2012 Nissan but I don’t have a check engine light on at all. It loses power going up the hill. I was going 80mph on the freeway and once a hill came it went down drastically to 60 almost 50. Shit scared me cause oncoming traffic was going fast. Can this be the same thing for my car?

Yes this is the beginning signs of a failing transmission. I would still take your car to your local auto parts store and have them scan the car. Even though your check engine light is off now there could still be codes stored in your cars computer

That’s because the fluid and filter for the trans needs to be changed, also I RECOMMEND adding a transmission cooler, change that fluid every 30k miles or so no more than 60 I give mine hell and I have 176k miles, living in south ga getting 100 degree weather. Cvt can’t stand heat at all!! When it’s hot the rpms will rise up while at a constant speed and make a whining noise! Can’t a trans cooler and change the fluid . Fluid is like $50 and cooler for a heavy duty is $70 ish and filter is around 20 with a new gasket included for the transmission pan

First scan the car with an OBD2 reader and get back with the code. I had the code p1778 and it fixed it after I replaced the valve body and stepper motor

The issue was the stepper motor and valvebody. Replaced both at the same time and it fixed it. Only $50 worth of parts from the junk yard

Mine does the same thing all I do is pull over kill the engine and the restart and it drives solves the limp mode but I have a first gear issue that I get shitty acceleration until I get to 3k rpm then it drives fine

That’s a failing stepper motor. It will only get worse eventually when you turn the car on and off again it won’t fix the issue anymore. The same thing happened to my car it’s not an immediate failure

Scan the check engine light to give you a proper diagnosis, you may just have to replace the step motor or valve body but possibly the entire trans depending on your issue

I use to have a 2009 Nissan Altima same as yours and mine did the same exact thing and I wasted so much money on that piece of shit but then I sold it and bought a 2017 Nissan Versa Note with only 11,000 miles. It’s been almost 6 months and I have 17k miles on it now and I bought it in the summer but now since it’s cold out whenever I start my car and when I take off itll be slow as hell and I’ll try to push it past 2 rpms and it won’t even move anywhere but if I let my car warm up for at least 5-10min then it’ll start going good and I’ll be able to take off but yeah idk I’m just scared it’s starting to get the same problem my old car had but the only difference is, is that my new Versa only does that when it’s cold my. My old Altima always did it whether it was 90 out or below average

King Don Julion nah there’s nothing really wrong with my Versa. It’s cuz it has a small engine with the cvt transmission so when it’s called out the engine just needs a little more time to heat up but it’s summer now so she’s been running smooth

Just look up your year altima on eBay and search “stepper motor”. And I think most shops can replace it. Nissan dealers won’t replace it they will only sell you an entire transmission

@@budgetdrift6403 hipp i just change harness to the valve body and the step motor the p1777 is gone. wiring after and before dumb cvt trans is clear no more cel, no problem detected on scan tool fuses are all lighting up fm the light test now its worst 2008 altima 2.5 s wont accelerate past 10mph take like 3 mins to even try to rev up no uphills acceleration which was always there but if im going down hill itll get out of limp mode acceleration past 30 like a brand new car but i stop for any thing then im struck starting over i think the pin where the step motor arm connect too is half way pushed in any advice is it worth spending money scotty kilmer said no to junk it i hear of people replacing trans and still same think can it be the computer need to be reset ?? reprogram? or just get that pin check out? im ready to junk it and move on
