2009 Nissan Murano SL AWD - CVT Fluid drain + Filter replacement

My journey into fixing what seems to be major transmission problem with this 2009 Nissan Murano SL AWD. Vehicle was purchased 'as is' - hoping that I'll be patient enough to diagnose and possibly fix any major or preferably minor problems with the transmission. Will I be lucky, or am I already screwed?

For 171,000 miles, if nobody has changed the fluid before, it doesn't look so bad. It's black and there's some sludge in there, but that is to be expected if you let the fluid go that long. The small amount of metal on the magnets is also not surprising. I'd change it again in another 10,000 miles. The fluid was very black, and you only get about 40% of it out this way. Useful video. We just purchased a 2010 Murano SL AWD with 115k. Service history shows CVT was serviced at 60k, so I'm right in line with recommended service. The kit I bought had the correct gasket, but the "filter screen" pick up tube was long like the one you showed. I took out the original, inspected, cleaned and re-installed. Don't know if the '09 has the external filter but I changed the external filter on mine. Good camera work, keep up the great job!

Just did this exact thing to my 14 Maxima. I also changed the little filter behind the left wheel connected to the two transmission hoses. My car is now running and shifting like brand new again. It no longer lags from a standstill or lags at or pulls at certain rpms anymore. No more bogging down speeding up! Great vid 👌

CVTs usually don't need a lot of service. In fact, the CVT fluid used in Nissans is generally considered a lifetime fluid, good for 150+k. The problem Nissan CVTs experience is the stepper motor from low to high gear fails (the one on the right side of your video at 8:02). So the transmission tries to start moving in high gear and moves very slowly if at all. We have a 2009 Murano and I've already changed the stepper motor once and it's failing again a year later. This time I'm changing all of the solenoids on the valve body (where the oil filer goes). Note that Idemitsu CVTF Type N fluid is correct for the Nissans (they make it and Nissan rebrands and upcharges for it).

Transmission oil losses it’s quality over time because of friction and heat. Don’t trust the “lifetime fluid” statement from manufactures.

There should be an external filter as well. Be sure to replace that too.

Did you ever figure out what the whining sound was? I am having the same sound coming from my 2009 Nissan murano S AWD. I believe it is the barring on the A/C compressor. Tell me if I'm wrong please lol

Well, my power steering pump would whine when low on fluid. There's a leak but haven't found the source. I just topped off every week or so. Unfortunately my most recent video and flush proved that metal was being shaved consistently inside trans, presumably leading to a low whining noise from trans

The source is most likely the high pressure powersteering hose. It cracks in between the foil wrapping. Very common problem. Check there

I'm working on update video. I learnt alot. It drove amazing for approximately 200 miles then started losing power. I repeated the process, changing filter (which was also clogged with particles) changing approx 5 quarts of cvt fluid, drove like a dream for another 200 miles or so before noticing power lose again. I've been told to consider doing a complete flush to get all the old fluid and particles out
