About the german question- it’s kind of weird how people have these expectations for language learners to learn specific languages. It almost makes it seem like learning a language is a casual easy thing that you just decide to do one day, but really it’s a commitment and people should do it if they feel drawn towards a language. I don’t even speak a lot of languages and I’ve still had people try to tell me to learn turkish or chinese or whatever, and I’m like..I don’t want to...haha. Like you want me to dedicate hundreds of hours to a language that doesn’t interest me when I’m already short on time in life? However I do understand asking a polyglot if they’ve ever been interested in a specific language.

This was very interesting! When I was small, I used to be very passionate about languages. I studied Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, German, French, even Esperanto. I was still obsessing over languages into my teens!! I got 95%+ in all my languages I took in high school, passed JLPT N3, and then, I dropped all of it. I don't know why. I guess I felt I just wasn't good enough to make a career out of it, and that's what counts, right? But I recently discovered that I was wrong, and that it does matter. I've decided I want to pursue my love of languages all over again, and I'm very excited for it!

Your videos are (in my opinion) the best of the polyglot videos out there and you deserve every single one of those 200k + subs. You videos are very straight-forward, not show-offy, and actually realistically helpful. Seriously thank you so much!

German is such a beatiful language, it has a unique way of expressing, i think you would love it. I was grown up in Chile, in a kind of "german" family, and we speak half spanish and half german. I don't know why, but I think reading in german is very enjoyable. Thanks for your Videos, you are my inspiration for learning languages :-)

@Anastasia Naumova I might also recommend Richard Simcott and Loki2504. The ladder does videos where he visits a particular country and practices what he has learnt with locals. He is really genuine and it is a delight to see him stumbling at first in a language in one video and in a later one seeing his progress in that language.

My husband and I are raising our daughter bilingual English/Afrikaans. We code switch a lot at home. Dit hang af die lengte van die woord. "bêre" is korter as "put away" en klink beter, en soms is die voord net snaaks. "Pantoffel" is much more fun to say than "slipper"!

German is my Third language and I understand why people don’t want to learn it. It is complex (not as hard as Korean 😂😅), but got this « harsh » sound. And it is only spoken in the middle of Europe. Language learning is so long and difficult, if we don’t love the language it will be too hard to learn it. Learn what you love most

I appreciate how you show the struggles with learning languages and how mindful you are about being authentic and how you are held to an impossible standard by some people (and you shouldn't be) but you stay true to being you and don't shy away from being truthful with you struggles as well as your successes. Thank you for putting the timestamps in the description, Because I found it easier to watch this By clicking around to various sections And thinking of it as a bunch of really short vids Rather than "20 minutes straight of answering random questions" (Which, rightly or wrongly, would have been my perception). You're right that "popularity" isn't a good reason to learn German; for me I learn it because I like the way it sounds, its relative consistency, and its history, As Martin Luther's Bible translation shaping the language resonates with me. With its culture, there are so many hymns and songs that I can find Easily accessible and free, even public domain, online, Which makes it easier for me to bring who I am into the new language confines. I'm looking forward to watching the next part of the Q&A. :) There are a lot of interesting questions asked by the first 200k!

I am just starting out my channel in Portuguese and I have already had to block multiple people that harass me for not having time to be their personal language partner. I can't imagine the amount of messages you receive like that. People don't realize how much time and energy this all takes, and that we have jobs outside of youtube as smaller creators. I have studied Spanish, Chinese, Russian, and Hebrew (in that order, from oldest to newest). I have found that if I try to think through a sentence in one of these languages and I run into a word I don't know, my brain fills in that gap with the word in the previous language I studied before that one. It's weird.

I have the exact same problem, but with Japanese! I can still understand spanish for example, and when I tried to remember some vocab and answer someone in Spanish at the airport, I was like: "Pero .... あの、あー、どうしてスペイン語が話せないの?" ... like, switching directly to Japanese after just one word! It is somehow cool, but also sometimes frustrating!

It happens to me a lot. I've really been studying Hebrew and I don't know any other Semitic languages. Despite that I keep inserting Hebrew words into sentences whenever I try to think in any other language besides English or Spanish. Even with Spanish(my heritage language), I sometimes convince myself Hebrew words are Spanish.

7:39 Can't believe it! ur so like me, except that you don't videogames. Now I'm gladder (I don't even know if it is correct to say like that but nevermind) that I found this channel. I had been thinking that it sucks that I can't get to walk around like before now that my country is in lockdown. I hope you get to do your outside hobbies soon (I didn't catch well whether you said the place u live in is lockdown cuz I'm a sleep deprived. Don't be harsh on me, people xD)

Oh, I wanted to give Thai a try too but it is completely unpronounceable for me. I like German's sound but I wouldn't pick up a language just because it's popular. Where I live, we sometimes refer to German, Russian, Spanish, French and Italian as ''the Great 5'' since they're the most popular picks amongst language learners but I don't really need to learn any of them so that's what I tell people when they ask similar questions. xD EDIT: There was a time I was wondering why you don't learn Finnish though, just because I thought it would appeal to your taste as a polyglot. ^^

Thanks for the videos. Not sure what the guy was going on about you not studying German for, but it seems like a lot of polyglots or polyglot wannabes are bad at reading social situations. Sometime people ask me why I don't study French. I know it is useful in a lot of places, but I it is relatively rare for me to hear French being spoken when I go out in my community. There might be 10 other languages I hear more frequently.

@@LindieBotes it's cause brazilians (for some weird reason) love to share their culture. It's no surprise the phrase "please come to brazil" has become a meme, lol
