About the german question- it’s kind of weird how people have these expectations for language learners to learn specific languages. It almost makes it seem like learning a language is a casual easy thing that you just decide to do one day, but really it’s a commitment and people should do it if they feel drawn towards a language. I don’t even speak a lot of languages and I’ve still had people try to tell me to learn turkish or chinese or whatever, and I’m like..I don’t want to...haha. Like you want me to dedicate hundreds of hours to a language that doesn’t interest me when I’m already short on time in life? However I do understand asking a polyglot if they’ve ever been interested in a specific language.

This was very interesting! When I was small, I used to be very passionate about languages. I studied Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, German, French, even Esperanto. I was still obsessing over languages into my teens!! I got 95%+ in all my languages I took in high school, passed JLPT N3, and then, I dropped all of it. I don't know why. I guess I felt I just wasn't good enough to make a career out of it, and that's what counts, right? But I recently discovered that I was wrong, and that it does matter. I've decided I want to pursue my love of languages all over again, and I'm very excited for it!

Thank you for putting the timestamps in the description, Because I found it easier to watch this By clicking around to various sections And thinking of it as a bunch of really short vids Rather than "20 minutes straight of answering random questions" (Which, rightly or wrongly, would have been my perception). You're right that "popularity" isn't a good reason to learn German; for me I learn it because I like the way it sounds, its relative consistency, and its history, As Martin Luther's Bible translation shaping the language resonates with me. With its culture, there are so many hymns and songs that I can find Easily accessible and free, even public domain, online, Which makes it easier for me to bring who I am into the new language confines. I'm looking forward to watching the next part of the Q&A. :) There are a lot of interesting questions asked by the first 200k!

Is it weird that when I try to speak in French my brain keeps going to Korean? And even filling gaps with Korean words. The thought of meeting with a french person or attending a french online class terrifies me because *I KNOW* that I will keep slipping into Korean
@Darkslide8204 жыл бұрын
I have studied Spanish, Chinese, Russian, and Hebrew (in that order, from oldest to newest). I have found that if I try to think through a sentence in one of these languages and I run into a word I don't know, my brain fills in that gap with the word in the previous language I studied before that one. It's weird.
@MrsNekoful4 жыл бұрын
I have the exact same problem, but with Japanese! I can still understand spanish for example, and when I tried to remember some vocab and answer someone in Spanish at the airport, I was like: "Pero .... あの、あー、どうしてスペイン語が話せないの?" ... like, switching directly to Japanese after just one word! It is somehow cool, but also sometimes frustrating!

I like to think of it as me asking my brain to find a word in my target language and my effort goes desperately into *not english!” And so my brain runs off and brings the first not english word it finds and that is always in the second language I am most comfortable in, and I’m like NO a different not english word!!

It happens to me a lot. I've really been studying Hebrew and I don't know any other Semitic languages. Oh, I wanted to give Thai a try too but it is completely unpronounceable for me. I like German's sound but I wouldn't pick up a language just because it's popular. Where I live, we sometimes refer to German, Russian, Spanish, French and Italian as ''the Great 5'' since they're the most popular picks amongst language learners but I don't really need to learn any of them so that's what I tell people when they ask similar questions. xD EDIT: There was a time I was wondering why you don't learn Finnish though, just because I thought it would appeal to your taste as a polyglot. ^^
