Oh my god a person who works 10-7! Finally a video featuring someone with the same mentally draining work schedule who doesn't have 24 hours a day to dedicate to language learning. This is honestly so refreshing because by the time I punch out, cook dinner, exercise, and do the dishes, it's 9PM, I'm mentally and physically drained from the day, and I get a good 1-2 hours of Korean study *barely*. I always feel so behind comparing myself to people with a lot more structurable time.. I am really trying to maximize my time this year and keep my big study binges for weekends when I have the extra energy to spare.

The pandemic made it a big problem for balancing time. Working from home is very difficult and I used to go to classes where that’s where I did schools and go home and relax and learn. Now that my classes are in my personal room and space. I procrastinate a lot more and get behind and my studies with school overlap with language learning. It’s a rough time in 2020. I was able to learn some but I can’t wait til classes and places are opened

All my classes for my bachelors were online and I just graduated in October. The pandemic didn't change a lot in terms of my daily life. I'm realizing that maybe when I start my masters in January, I should set up an area of the house (like the basement) where I work on school work, and then come up stairs and work on language learning as if I was in a different space entirely. I don't know if it will work, but I struggle big time with procrastination and lack of mental energy.

I'm still a newbie language learner compared to you and still finding my feet with it, so I was really relieved to hear you say about habits over goals. I feel like so many polyglots push having a concrete goal and I've just never really jibed with that. My end goal is complete fluency, but I'd rather enjoy the journey to get there than beat myself up for not reaching X goal in however many months and make myself feel like a failure if I don't get there. I don't see how that's supposed to be encouraging, I'd rather feel like I'm chipping away at it through daily habits and keep my passion alive.

I've really surprised myself on my own language learning goals this year. I was studying Korean for fun for a few years, but since moving to Korea, I've only felt really pressured to learn it (by both myself and others), and it's really turned me off to learning it. I've since taken a break from it. In that time, I've started learning other languages that I'd put on the back burner for one reason or another, and have found my motivation to be MUCH higher with Chinese and ASL. I know I will come back to Korean, because I really do love it, but I had forgotten that fun and joy with learning it. Your channel really makes me feel okay with the ups and downs of language learning and I really appreciate that 🥰

The biggest thing I've learned from making yearly goals is that goals can change drastically over the course of a year haha. So even though every year I technically "fail" to achieve 100% of my goals, I still enjoy setting yearly goals because it's also really interesting to look back on what your past self really wanted to achieve. For the sake of actually achieving goals, though, I agree that setting goals in shorter periods is much more attainable.

the whole habits over goals is such a great mindset! I noticed it myself as well, I had much smaller goals than u. But I found it hard to stick to it when it's a goal - smth so far off in the future "read a whole book in German", and things were working out much nicer when I had enough time and energy for reading a few pages twice a week. I had a much better feeling about the whole thing even thought I wasnt moving along faster with the book. also your point about time not equaling mental energy. thats so true, ive been working from home since march and i feel like i get done less than i would have last year around this time. even tho i finish work at 6-7 (much later than i would at the office), i dont have energy to sit down to do a german lesson/read. the only thing that i kept is watching tv shows in german on netflix (at least smth)

Your comments about how the people you interact with affect your learning are so true. I realise now how lucky I was when I started learning Spanish to find my Spanish community really quickly - a small class of people around my age who all went to a bar after class to keep practising, a conversation club in a bar every week etc. With Italian I just haven’t found that same kind of connection with anyone and I really haven’t learned in the same way

I don’t know how it will change as I become more advanced and I finish all of the memrise courses but I’m excited to see where it goes.

You're right: the pandemic messed with everybody's plans. Working from home drained energy from language studies. I ended up spending more time (re-)learning Spanish than studying Korean. I'm finally getting around to learning and when I drive with my dad it's mostly enjoyable and I'm pretty confident driving around town with him. I'm very much self-deprecating but I decided to change it for the better. Heck, I'm even considering doing a review series for different Russian KZbin educators on what kind of content, resources, and experience they offer. Something else that helped me was writing down what I achieved in regards to language learning and looked at my progress daily. It was somewhat like game, like "leveling up" if I had to use a phrase for it. So, that's my comment. Happy language learning to all, and stay safe!

In the middle of the pandemic, and after hitting rock bottom in some areas, I finally decided to return to French, after a six year hiatus. The experience of immersing myself in language learning has been a refreshing opportunity to forget briefly about the stress in my life. People like you have given me the inspiration to pursue this journey. One of my key takeaways of your videos is that I should cherish the journey of language learning, perhaps far more than the destination. The fact that my French shows, series and news outlets are still there, regardless of what happens in the world, is a true blessing in the middle of this pandemic.

Finding a good teacher online is so difficult! On italki, I usually enjoy classes with community tutors rather than the "professional" teachers. Yay Tagalog! Congrats. I stopped learning Italian after 2 years to focus on Russian because I got a girlfriend. Then I stopped learning Russian after 8 months because we broke up and I lost all motivation. However, I returned to Spanish and was going to stop because I was comfortable at my B1+. But then I discovered Élite (through Season 1) and I want to study all the slang expressions to understand everyone. I've also gone back to listening to German in preparation to converse work my other friend when we exercise. It will take at least 3 months to get confident to speak, but it's my only language plan for now.

I totally agree with U , especially when you said we should focus on habits and systems instead of the goal itself (sorry for my English, I'm learning it) One of my 2021 goals is learning French so I'll divide my study plan in 3 months as you said. Thank U a million for this video😍

congrats on the BF! i'm so excited for you! being stopped after every word- i think you explained it well. this was literally my korean teacher! i'd volunteer in class but he'd stop me/others after 1-3 words and point out the mistake. i just kind of stopped volunteering after a while. so i know a lot of grammar but cannot use it cause i didn't want to practice and use it.

I agree with the merger between work+home when you start working from home. I miss the clear separation when I had to go into the office and now find it draining to focus on work when I’m home.

Estoy completamente de acuerdo contigo. Inglés es mi idioma nativo y aprendía español. Quería aprender portuguese este año a un nivel bueno, pero mi vida es loca! Thanks for being such a big inspiration!!❤

This is a great video! This year has definitely been one crazy roller coaster for all of us. I'll be moving to México in January and have been trying to focus on my Spanish, all while trying to balance my work from home life as an illustrator, while still keep some sanity and manage all of my other hobbies and languages I want to learn. I also started to learn Swedish this year and found myself spending more time on Swedish rather than Spanish. It's so tough to manage time when you have so many passions and interests. 😭

My Spanish learning plan went out the window the past 4 months. Some days I barely touched it or didn’t do anything. With all the anxiety around my job in healthcare during COVID, my mental energy was gone by the time I tried to start studying. So I stopped studying. Instead I read a short article or listened to a short podcast. When I felt like grammar session, I studied. This year to too stressful to hold ourselves to a hard timeline.

Time does not equall mental energy Here's my take on that, I learned it the hard way, I thought that since I had a lot of time working from home I could register in all the courses of the semester + 1, besides that my full time job, I didn't do great at work and procrastinated a lot college assignments. Mid year I asked for an unpaid month leave because I really needed a break and here I am, at the start of my break reevaluating everything I was doing.

I'm brazilian and I've been studying english since 2nd grade (I'm in 8th grade now hehe) and it's so good to say that I understood everything you just said without any subtitles and the fact that I'm only 13yo! I think I always had interesting in learning languages but I am just discovering it now! Hahaha 😂 Speaking portuguese and English and also learning korean (that I really hope I can speak fluently someday) has been something that I know will impact my future and change it completely, and you are a person who motivates me! Knowing all those hard languages, it makes me happy, 'cause I know it's not impossible, so thank you!

I loved this video so much! I really agree with the input from friends, as this year I have finally started learning a couple languages with one of my friends, allowing me to more quickly learn. Also, I am currently planning out my next year, and was wondering if you could show how you plan out everything. This quadrant system sounds interesting. No pressure, I understand that if you don't want to make a video on it, you don't have to. Love you!

I agree so much with the part of time is not equal to energy! My energy levels have fluctuated a lot, a few months ago I was studying german a lot and now I'm doing like the bare minimum, but as you say, I've learned to kind to myself.

Hello Lindie I love you videos 😃 I got "serious" about language learning this year but it's been kind of all over the place. During the first half of the year, I went from only knowing hiragana to getting through Genki 1 and understanding the vocabulary (and kanji that goes with them :3 ) to JLPT N4. Then I realized that the pandemic is not going to stop soon, and I had a scare with my grandma's health. She speaks a little Japanese but her native language is Vietnamese. So, I wanted to learn Vietnamese as fast as I could. I think I rushed over the material in my textbook too quickly because I was so eager to speak with my grandma. Her English is very limited. Well, I restarted and decided to go slower. I could go really quickly in Genki but the text I'm using for Vietnamese is more advanced I think 😅 So I have no idea where I am in Vietnamese now, I can read and write quite well and my pronunciation is good but I keep forgetting grammar rules.. So maybe somewhere between A1 and A2 which is a good start :) I only have been maintaining the Japanese that I know by watching Shin chan.... Then also my fiance's grandma expressed that she wants me to learn Dutch, so I'm doing my best to learn that as well. It's really crazy how I thought at the beginning of the year I would only learn Japanese and aim for N3, but ended up not really actively studying Japanese at all after June or so... I never thought I'd be learning Dutch, either. I am happy to hear that you have a boyfriend. My boyfriend became my fiance just two days ago. He wants to get married as soon as possible but I don't think Corona will allow 😓I wish you the best Lindie you're such an inspiration :)

Sort of same for me. I used to love making plans, and never stuck to them. But I made a new sort of "plan" this year in July. Somewhere I read you overestimate what you can achieve in one year and underestimate what you can do in five years. So I made a plan for ten years and eleven languages. I estimated how many hours I'd need to reach the level I'd like to have in 2030, and then I divided the sum by 3650 (365 days in a year x 10). The result is that if I'm studying one hour and 45 minutes per day (on average, but no matter which language) I'll reach my goal. This plan is still motivating me now, five months later :D And yes, people do play a very important role in language learning, I'm very thankful to my Slovak language partner!

I also started planning quarterly goals instead of yearly goals. It makes more sense lol. My plans and focus changed so much throughout the year. Congrats on the boyfriend! That's so touching that he's learning Afrikaans!
