I know this is one of your older videos so you might not see this comment. We have 6 of these trucks in our fleet. The last one I did hadn't been serviced yet with only 13,000 miles on it. While attempting to remove the cap, the center of it snapped off leaving a giant hole. I was able to get the rest of the cap off but it wasn't fun. Talked to the dealer where we bought it and they warrantied the $80 cap.

Old or new videos....youtube makes sure I get notified when comments are made. Cool to see that they warrantied it. I have had a few that kicked my rear for sure....those I mainly blame on previous techs. Awesome vid as usual! For those doing this at home, cut you a short length (18-24") of garden hose. Slide it over the drain hose into your pan. No dripping diesel. Make sure you cycle the key on and off to prime the filter housing or you'll get the continuous crank but no start.
@margerichards8868 Жыл бұрын
Love the garden hose idea. At the end he clearly states that bumping the key does NOT work on this year.

Very helpful video. On 2016 Ram 3500 they have a short hose on front filter housing, but not long enough to clear everything. Found that the disposable hose that comes with jugs of Def fits over existing hose and get one clear of all objects. On video of rear filter, I encounter a great deal of fuel when I unscrewed filter--- this after attaching drain hose, opening drain and then removing water sensor.
@MotorCityMechanic7 жыл бұрын
The rear will drain then stop and then when you try taking it loose or the water sensor...it starts draining again. Plus being over the drive shaft.....it will splatter everywhere. Hi MotorCity. What do you think? My 2016 2500 cummins has what seems like a real slow throttle response. I drove a 2018 and it was night and day better. I've taken it to the dealer and asked them to check it. They said they could not find anything. But they did say my fuel filters could be causing the slow engine response. It has 12,000 miles on it and has good power once the throttle communicates with the ECM and it spools up. Could it just be the filters? That just doesn't make since because it has good power.

great videos.if i may add, Ive currently got a 2004 ram 2500. Ive been changing my fuel filters myself just about every or every other oil change. I just wanted to say that keeping a good,clean fuel filter does help. Most will agree the that the 5.9 common rail diesel that i have in my 2004,the injectors will last about 150-170,000 miles before needing replaced. I didnt have to have mine replaced until 285,000 miles for the first time. The diesel shop (Scheid diesel in Illinois) was shocked to have seen mine go so long,and also commented they have not seen any go that long before with stock set up. keep the filters clean and use good quality filters. Also, i just ordered a new 2016 ram 3500, are they the same setup as 2015? Last question,with my 2004 i dont bump the ignition after i replace the fuel filter as you have mentioned in your video's. It has a fuel pump , so i turn the key to the "on" position and step away for a few minutes or untill i hear the fuel pump stop. its only going to pump fuel until it creates enough pressure so Why not just do that with these 6.7L? Thanks.

@MotorCityMechanic9 жыл бұрын
+shifty pants Thanks for the comment. I find it easier to spin the engine over. Reason why is that it you had fuel to the housing first....theres a good chance that inserting the filter will force/splash some of the fuel out. Installing the filter first and then trying to get some fuel into the housing is slow going because you don't have much space to add the fuel. The other issue I see is having some diesel on hand to fill it in the first place. Sitting on the front seat and using the key is much more easier to me....I get a bit lazy sometimes and when the option is there, I'm taking it lol. Its a good thought however. thank for the video, very informative!! I just changed both of these filters on my 2014 6.7 yesterday. What do you typically do with the drained fuel? No auto parts places seem to take it and if it has contaminants in it I don't want to dump it back into the tank. Tried using a cheap penzoil rubber filter wrench on the rear filter which was useless. Ended up using large channel locks.
@MotorCityMechanic8 жыл бұрын
I like the band style oil filter wrenches. They work the best for me on the rear. I never thought of the issues with getting rid of the old fuel.....guess I'm spoiled working at the dealership. What if I stripped the fuel filter cap nut using a 1 1/8 socket? What do you recommend?
@MotorCityMechanic7 жыл бұрын
What I do is place a rag over the nut and then the socket so as to give it a bit more of something to hold on to. The rag takes up the space between the socket and the cap hex portion. You may find that you may have to fold the rag once so that its two layers and you may also have to tap the socket on as it gets tighter with the rag. Thats how I usually get them off when someone else has stripped it. Hope this helps and make sure to subscribe

Hi, thanks for these videos. I'm about to change my '14 model filters. What was that lube you used on the o-ring for the front filter on the engine? I was guessing you'd use diesel itself, prior to you mentioning the lube and bring out the container of it. Again, appreciate the instructional vid.
@MotorCityMechanic8 жыл бұрын
+popsfarm Diesel fuel is the recommend lubricant for that o-ring. I like to personally use a super thin smear of grease. Just enough to help aid in installing the cap. Not enough to cause any damage. It seems to allow the cap to come back off easier the next time you need to remove it. That's what I do....service info says diesel fuel. Thanks for watching the video. and don't forget to subscribe

@seankorman773219 күн бұрын
Do you have the part number for that fuel filter
@walterk12215 жыл бұрын
The only issue I have is that the proper socket is 28mm rather 1 1/8 inch. Otherwise, very excellent step by step.

Have you changed the fuel filter housing? How long of a job is that?
@MotorCityMechanic7 жыл бұрын
I have.....its been awhile and it was when swapping out an engine. Time frame....possibly an hour. I dont remember it being too hard.

Is the front fuel filter on my 2015 RAM 3500 6.7 diesel in the same place as the one in this video? Is the replacement procedure the same? Thanx......
@MotorCityMechanic8 жыл бұрын
It will be exactly the same. Don't forget you have one on the rear as well. I have a video for that so make sure to check it out if you haven't all ready. Thanks for the question and for watching the video. Make sure to subscribe

I have the 2018 ram 2500 cummins, do I have to crank it 3-4s intervals or does the pump turn on momentarily on opening the switch.
@MotorCityMechanic6 жыл бұрын
Both. I turn it on and wait and then crank and then repeat.

Great videos, what are you lubing the o-rings with?
@MotorCityMechanic8 жыл бұрын
+Lee Kelly Morning, they recommend using clean diesel fuel. I personally have a large tub of bearing grease that I like to use to put a small smear of lube on O-rings and seals that need it. It just comes in handy. Like I said....I just smear a small amount....not a large amount. Never had any issues. Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe!

To get fuel going through, can you also put the key on the "ON" position 3 times to get the fuel going through and starting it?
@MotorCityMechanic7 жыл бұрын
You have to options....do the key method multiple times and then it may still spin over a bit till finally started. Other option is the short cranking cycles as mentioned in the video. Both will work fine either way. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Make sure to subscribe and share the videos.

I purchased the filters from my local autozone and they gave me two but they both look like the rest from your other video. Is a 2014 6.7 3500 DRW the same as this and they sold me the wrong filters or is the rear and front the same on the 2014 6.7
@dra56977 жыл бұрын
They both look like the rear filter, fat fingers
@MotorCityMechanic7 жыл бұрын
The front will be a cartridge style exactly like in the video and the rear will look like an over sized oil filter with an open threaded bottom for the water in fuel sensor. Looks like the parts guy didnt know what he or she was doing in this case.

Could you fill the can back up with some of the fuel you drained out, or new fuel?
@MotorCityMechanic7 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't use any fuel that you drained out. You could use fresh fuel but the having done on hand and the time to refill wouldn't be any faster then letting the vehicle do it for you. Thanks for the question and make sure to subscribe
