I just did both filters this morning. The front isn't too bad, I just slid another piece of vinyl tubing over the short stub, to a drain pan. But the engineer who put the rear filter over the driveshaft needs a swift kick in the family jewels.

Great video :). I'm about to tackle both of my filters and I don't anticipate any problems. I do have a question though. If you are replacing both filters, should you start the vehicle after installing one filter, and then do the second? I was just curious if it takes longer or is it more difficult priming the system if you change both filters at the same time. Thanks for you help and your videos are outstanding .
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 7 жыл бұрын
I recommend priming both at the same time. Its really not a big deal....on some you can turn the key on for a few seconds and then off and repeat a few times so that it doesnt take as many tries when cranking. Otherwise you should be okay. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe!

Back when I got my 2016 ram I was out traveling, and needed to replace my fuel filters. I'm not the best at this stuff, but I've worked on a lot of small engine stuff like mowers, and weed whackers along with traveling on an old diesel school bus with some friends, and helping my buddy replace a filter on it. Anyways I knew it was a pretty simple repair, and that I could do it if I needed to, but I was really paranoid about fucking up my first big boy purchase, and voiding the (useless) warranty. So I decided I'd go to jiffy lube since I couldn't find any local repair shops. First one I went to looked at me like I was nuts, and had no clue what a fuel filter was, and I shit you not tried to sell me air filters. Second one I went to said oh yeah well do it, and an hour later told me they couldn't get the fuel filter off, and that it was too tight, then tried charging me for labor, third finally got the job done (father and son run jiffy lube), but I had to go find them the filter lol. Watching you casually loosen that sucker off there made me crack up. My baby is at 200k+ miles now, and other then a 10k$ repair bill for a faulty scr system @50k miles, a lengthy battle between the sketchy dodge dealer shop that said it was covered under warranty, the warranty itself, and the dealer who sold it to me going to bat for me it hasn't had a single issue. The bill eventually got dropped so the shop that tried to fuck me didn't even get paid for the parts. I only got a couple more months left before I don't gotta worry about mr repo man either which will be great with all this covid shit.

That was a great video on part of my problem, I "accidentally" put gas in my tank, when i realized what I was doing, I shut off the engine at the gas station and had it towed home. Is there an easy way to drain the fuel tank so I can flush it, or should I take it to the dealer? I don't what to ruin my engine, but hate to waste a ton of money if not necessary. Thanks again for the video

Very good video. I just subscribed. A couple of questions; does the O ring used on the drain housing come with the new filter? Also how does turning key to on-off several times fill the fuel filters or best to actually start the engine?
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 9 жыл бұрын
Morning. The new filter assembly will come with 2 orings. One for the filter to housing seal and the other for the water in fuel sensor/water drain. Reason for bumping the key in the start position is that it causes the lift pump in the tank to run for a few seconds which helps speed up the filter filling with fuel.

Hi first off thanks for your videos you have been a big help. I have a question for you I have a 2018 Ram 3500 with a 6.7 l engine and I've already changed both of my fuel filters but upon changing the front filter at the recommended interval it was brand new looking crisp White can I go any longer with the filter under the hood as long as it looks white and clean as long as I keep changing the back one. Also I use my truck for work and what happens if you go past 0% for the fuel filter and oil filter change indicator does your truck shut down or does it decrease your engine power thanks. I work with my truck and cant get to a location to get those changed and don't want to get stuck on side of the road LOL
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
When the time to change oil and fuel filter messages come up.....it will be just a message and will not cause it to eventually not start or leave you on the side of the road. Personally I would replace both fuel filters every 15000 miles no matter what it looks like. Its cheap insurance and can prevent fuel related issues. I wouldnt go more then that as far as miles. Only changes I go with 7500.

So after installing both filters all you have to do is try cranking the truck and you will not get air in the lines right?
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 9 жыл бұрын
Calistro Rodriguez There will be air in the lines but the system will bleed the air out with no problems. Imagine it being like a gas engine......the fuel system on the 6.7 common rail Cummins works much the same way so no issues. Just takes a bit of turning over to get the fuel to the injectors being that 2 fuel filter housings need to be filled up. Just follow the steps in the video and all will be well
@Ltngdrvr
@Ltngdrvr 8 жыл бұрын
The prescribed method for filling the new filters with fuel and purging the air, is to cycle the key on for a short time, then back off, and repeat a number of times. I will turn the key on for 15 seconds then off for 5 seconds, and will do this 8-10 times. Then the truck will crank right up and idle perfectly as all air has been purged. Too bad you didn't do this video on a pickup instead of a chassis cab truck, the rear water separator removal is quite a bit more difficult back there. The engineers didn't put much thought into maintenance on these trucks.

I had the oil changed on my 3500, today. They changed both filters. 27 000 miles. 625 can$ (or 500$ US) They changed one of the filters before that... Do you think it is reasonable, or my dealer is making money with me?

Wow.....ran away as fast as you can. You can order both filters from Geno’s Garage for around $120 plus one one labor which is around $100. So round $220-$300 at the most. Anything more is you being ripped off. I say order your own and save a few hundred dollars. Thanks for the question and I hope you think twice before letting them do it. So I got a diesel yesterday 6.7 2014 ram 4x4 message came out on my dash water in fuel drain filters. Does that mean you have to drain the filters or replace them
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 9 жыл бұрын
frank soto Hey there Frank. You need to drain the fuel at the filters into a clear and clean container and see how much water comes out. If any comes out I would replace both filters. Depending on how much....you may need to drain and clean the fuel tank. The most important think for a diesel is clean fuel. You don't want to have to spend thousands of dollars due to contaminated fuel. Could be a sensor issue or actually water so look at what was drained to see if water is present. +Tall Don 68 don't step on the brake, but press the start/stop button twice (accessory position then run position) and you will hear the pump cycle. After the pump cycles then press start again to go to off. Repeat 4-5 times and finally run the engine by pressing the brake down during the final start cycle. Note: if you just take to the accessory position (like I did) 4-5 times then you will have a really hard starting sequence that you can't stop even if you press the start/stop button again.

Its a messy job for sure and unless your have a large drain pan or more then one....its getting all over the ground if your not careful or yourself as you found out. One of those get it loose and then get out the way until it stops leaking. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe.

@@MotorCityMechanic thanks for the reply. Sorry for the negativity. I was really frustrated when it happened. Your video was informative though.

The most important thing about diesel engines is the fuel quality.....the more the better. Other brands such as Ford have been running two filters for a while now. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching. Dont forget to subscribe!

So let me tell ya this....I just did my 2015, and The REAR one was a tight ass fit for a mans arm/hand. Why they didn't install on the frame ,,,who knows. Then I did the front fuel filter. WTF....WTF.....that cap was on like the incredible HULK installed it.

It can be a work out sometimes. I had to baby a front filter cap off the other day......felt like it would never come off.

I found that it one starts rounding off....you can put a rag over it and then put the socket on. The rag acts as a spacer to help it grip better. Another option....Geno's Garage sales an aluminum replacement. The method you used is an alternative as well. I will have to keep that in mind in the future. Thanks for the idea. Make sure to subscribe if you havent already.
