I agree with the other guy about the filter being a little bit of a stinker. In fact it's not fun at all & you made it look so easy my friend. PS... I do prime my filters when they're straight up and down to eliminate a dry start-up. Thanks for sharing the video & super GR8 job.👍👍👍

I used Napa know how oil that is made by Valvoline. Its a bit pricy, however i caught it on a online sale with Free shipping. As far as i know, all Napa oil is made by Valvoline. My 2016 GMC Terrain Denali 3.6 is out of warranty but i still bought dexos approved. Napa gold or platinum filters are GR8 like many others. Thanks for making video & sharing.......👍👍👍

First, it's impressive that you found an oil that isn't dexos GM approved! Even Kirkland and Walmart supertech branded oil has Dexos standards. Depending on if your car still has a warranty or not, using oil that is does not meet the dexos standard could void the warranty. If for some reason you can't return the oil or just don't want to, I would at least make sure it is ILSAC-6 oil with the API "starburst". If you can share what oil you have, I would love to know what you bought for my own curiosity.

@@MetaloopDIY I also got an oil that doesn't have the dexos sticker on it-- It's Valvoline SAE 5W-30 Full synthetic High Mileage. any thoughts? It does have the API certified sticker and says ILSAC GF-6A. About to change oil myself on my 2016 GMC Terrain for the first time...

@@valzer84 I don't know the reason but I have noticed that high mileage oils don't have Dexos approval. Generally speaking, your oil is probably fine. The only reason to not use it would be if your car has a warranty of some sort. It's just another thing for them to use to deny a claim.

Nice vid. The oil filter placement on these is the worst. Changing the oil is great until it comes to that filter. I hate that step on my 3.6L Equinox!

Ryster, really appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. I couldn't agree more. I also noticed the OEM ACDelco filter was slightly taller than the Purolator. I didn't even bother trying the filter cap wrench when putting it on. I'm guessing you use a strap wrench for your oil changes? I've never heard of engine oil expanding as it gets warm. Because it dosen't. It expands/thickens when cold and thins when heated. Just like every oil on the planet does.

Hi again. Oil does expand at 4% for every 100 degrees F www.engineeringtoolbox.com/cubical-expansion-coefficients-d_1262.html But to your point, it even accounting for typical operating temperatures, that's likely less than 10% expansion. A half quart buffer like I'm suggesting is probably too conservative. Also engine oil does get more viscous as it heats up. The additives are what do this. That is why the second number is an oil weight is always bigger (e.g. 0w-20). It starts thin when cold and thickens up with the additives as it reaches operating temperature. That all said, I don't think viscosity and volumetric expansion are related, so the thickening doesn't necessary make it expand. I get the filter off fine but, putting a new one back on is the b-word. Takes me for ever to catch that first thread because of that goofy angle. Lots of swearing at engineers that can't hear me.😅

I agree with you generally any API Starburst (ILSAC GF-6) is probably fine, except if someone's car is still under warranty, than I would make sure to keep receipts around saying I used dexos oil to ensure dealer cooperation on warranty issues. But also, at this point, you have to dig really hard to find oil that isn't dexos. Even Walmart Supertech and Kirkland oil is dexos. 😂 Thanks for commenting!
