I found this video to be very helpful. The process went exactly as demonstrated. Being extra carefully and using a step stool (because I'm a whopping 5'10"), this process took ~15 minutes. The Allen screws on my bars were loose as they should be and so I tightened them using a 4mm Allen wrench after securing the cross bars in place.

Good video - if I can make one comment that maybe helpful. Make sure to look at the positioning of the end caps before you take them off - meaning how they sit on the rubber pad on the roof. While putting my first cap back on after the crossbar install I was able to get the cap to snap into place (but it looked odd). It wasn’t until I put the second cap on did I notice exactly how they sit onto the rubber pad, with rubber exposed at the tail end of the cap. Although my first cap was replaced improperly by myself , it still clicked on a a positive fit - it wasn’t until the second cap did I see the perfect placement. I hope this makes sense. Yeah, and also tighten the bolts on each crossbar, and yes the bolts are supposed to be visible while looking down at the roof rack from above. I had another 4Runner with factory racks and that’s how they were positioned

Thanks on this video. I am trying to remove my OEM crossbars due to the lack of clearance for my roof items. My Yakima box barely fits without rubbing the roof. It makes it very difficult to take the box on and off. Thanks

You forgot to mention that the rubber strips that come in the package of the OEM crossbar kit need to be installed to prevent the rails from coming back.

​@@jamesgerboc They're for the rails to not walk back over time and hit the back plastic cover. It acts as a stopper. They pop right into the rail, up as far back against the back cover, once the cover is back on. Do not use the tip I saw somewhere on here to use WD40 to slide them in. The whole point of them is for them not act as a stopper not slide around. They pop into the rail without any lubricants.

You can and see almost did….. however I wound up going with “LFD” steel cross bars and have never looked back. Several manufacturers make steel ones that don’t flex that bolt in the factory rack system. In my opinion it’s the way to go. I have 4 on mine and I put serious weight on them and they support fine

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the 4runner factory crossbars are next to useless. Their low height severely limits what you can mount to them. Aftermarket options are a much better choice in my opinion.

Ive got a Yakima Skybox and it appears that using the factory bars that the clamps the connect the box to the rails cannot clear the roof as I attach the box to the rails and, worse, that the oem bars will flex causing the clamps to strike the roof...can anyone confirm this?
