So, is it setting false circuit codes even though the pcm can be commanded to ground?
@NewLevelAuto5 жыл бұрын
That's correct. The computer uses a " voltage sense circuit " . It's purpose is essentially to monitor the lines and look for inferred amperage by using a voltage drop. That's the component that fails. I've searched through many engineering papers on SAE to see if more info was able to be gotten to no avail.

Shouldn't you test to be sure your purge valve isn't open before condemning the PCM? If the coil inside the valve is open, the PCM won't see the 12 volts sitting there and assume the circuit is open.

Just did a sport trac last week with the same issue. It’s pretty dumb of Ford to discontinue a PCM they are having issues with. So your telling me that this person still has a 4.0L ford engine that still runs. Mind blown!.. I was working for ford when those terrible 4.0L engines with the stupid timing chain in the back of the head were still being put in new vehicles. the 3.8 and 4.0 ford V6 engines are some of the worst. 3.8 takes the cake (head-gaskets galore) but the 4.0 was not too far behind... its crazy because the 4.6v8 and 5.4 (2valve motors) were some of the most reliable motors ever. go figure.
@JoesAutoElectric5 жыл бұрын
The 4.0 was actually a very good engine. As much as people make fun of Ford, the truth of it is they are very good. The 3.8 had head gasket issues, but let's be honest here. I have had 4.0 engines with 300k on them running just fine. I still work on many of them for my customers and they have very little in the way of major issues. Unfortunately the timing chain setup is junk. If it fails, better to put a new engine than waste the time pulling it to do chains.
@Autofixpals5 жыл бұрын
@@JoesAutoElectric I remember condemning a lot of 4.0 engines as needing to be replaced because of timing chain issues. I give ford lots of credit i drive a ford, my wife drives a ford, i have owned at least 3 or 4 in the past. I suppose some folks get lucky and have no issues with their 4.0l or maybe the second generation was sorted out. But i personally have never been a fan of that engine. In fact i beileve their was a recall on the chain tensioners or something like that on the earlier versions. Yes i remember the 3.8 head gasket issues, i was one of the unfortunate people that had the pleasure of doing the headgasket recalls. The 3.8 and the 4.0 where the most commonly torn apart motors (for repair) when i worked at a ford dealer late 90's to early 2000's. Today, i dont believe they have any engines that are considered a disaster. V6 water pumps are unnecessarily difficult to change, but they dont fail often.

I have issue with the accuracy of the test light check performed as proof the PCM is at fault! As performed on the video, it only read the voltage present coming FROM the PCM with KEY ON (brown/yellow wire) and does NOT check the wire going back TO the PCM in this 2 wired harness that controls the action of the Purge Solenoid Valve! This only proves you have good voltage coming TO the Valve with KEY ON! This return wire to (I assume is the ground back to the PCM) could be compromised (open/shorted/intermittent) and the cause of a fault. OR, it may a signal wire to another circuit in side the PCM that controls another function??? Although it is stated, a PCM change cured the problem, the disturbance and handling of the harnesses and wires involved to do so, may have temporarily cured a weak connection issue, that was the true cause of the check engine light! Removing and replacing a high priced PCM with no proof of it being at fault is not good troubleshooting (swap parts until it works!). BOTH wires to the VALVE should be checked for continuity/short to ground with the KEY OFF as a first step. Then BOTH wires (red test lead to brown/yellow and black test lead to black) should next be checked for DC voltage with KEY ON. I also have a hard time believing a reputable PCM Repair Company cannot find a fault and repair a PCM much cheaper than buying a new OEM. ps: my Ford dealer stocks the PCM for 2006 thru 2010 4.0 Ford Explorers ( not discontinued). The over the counter cost ...$600 plus $400 core!... no way I would go that route vs finding a reputable PCM Repair Shop ... and only once I find the fault with my PCM! Although I do find this is a GREAT and very APPRECIATED video, I only give it 4.5 stars as I question the logic and test procedure!
