I've seen and experienced bad grounds but this vehicle is something very different. He's right about aftermarket electronic and electrical parts. They're junk! Thank you Bernie for this enlightening video! Getting back to theory of operation, use of the scope and experience solved the problem. You are one in a million Bernie!

Great job! I've faced the same problem on 10-15 years old Hondas. As just as your ground wires got rusted - coils are going crazy and you have coils and cranck shaft sensor DTC. Non of them turn to be faulty, just rust and oxidation on ground wires. Love your way to search for malfunctions! Thank you for your wisdom and passion!

I've been told several times by several people that you just can't put aftermarket crank sensors in Jeeps. I know a couple of shops besides just the dealer that specialize in Jeeps and they say that same thing. Chrysler grounds are just Chrysler grounds. We used Stabilant 22 on my Ram truck computer connections after it being suggested by a guy who specializes in Ram trucks. Napa and Advance Auto had it on the shelf but it's pricey. They also call it SL5 or CE1. Thanks for the video. I learn more from these type of videos than I ever did in school.

Can't use aftmkt. O2 sensors either... ....or coils .............or cmps ....................or anything electrical. I have even had pcm codes telling me that the wrong oil is in the engine! No lie!!! And what's really interesting is that Mopar is cheaper, yes cheaper than the top rated aftmkt. parts. And I use deoxit electrical enhancer. Good stuff.

The thing all these circuits have in common in any vehicle is the ground. The negative spikes exceed the PIV of and PN junction in the op amps or any others transistors in the circuits. My first guess when the scope displayed showed was ground.. so glad it turned out correct. Been out of electronics for a couple of decades. Great case study!

An over voltage is may be even worser than a voltage dip in the 5V supply. The overvoltage could toast the circuit. Also the very strong current changes in each coil can cause "overtalk" to other wires in it's neighbourhood. The way to prevents this to shield these wires. So the way you wired it could also contribute to the changes dips and or peaks in the measured 5v supply.

I wish Bernie would have tested the vehicle after cleaning the grounds to see if that fixed the problem. Instead, he changed the crank sensor at the same time. Therefore, we don't know what the actual fix was. In other videos (ScannerDanner, SMA), they had similar crank signal issues and DTCs on Jeep Patriots. In both cases, replacing an aftermarket crank sensor with an OEM sensor fixed the problem.

Having run into many Chrysler crank sensors over the years, and have been told that between the after market and OE there is some variations of degrees in the settings. I would have liked to seen the testing without changing parts, to me you take a methodical approach in finding the issue, but you change to many variables to prove the grounds were the main issue. I would have liked to seen the scope values with the coils and crank that were in when it came in. Just my two cents on the subject, you took a great approach in finding the failure, but then parts cannon the car before reviewing the scope.
