Val Bisoglio was a talented character actor. He appeared as Mr. Manero in Saturday Night Fever ("four dollars don't buy you three dollars") and as Corrado's friend in The Sopranos. RIP

A lot of people today might not understand the context of this. This was broadcast during the early 1970s, when Joe Colombo, head of one of the Five Mafia Families in NYC, created the "Italian American Civil Rights League". The League was irate about the media, newspapers, TV, and movies at the time using the word "Mafia". Actually, what's known as the Mafia does not even call itself "Mafia", but that's beside the point. Colombo claimed the word was a slur on all Italians. It's doubtful that was ever the case, but nevertheless he made a highly publicized protest about it at the time. To everyone's amazement, the Italian American Civil Rights League developed a huge following, and was often discussed in the press. But Colombo was gunned down in 1971 at a large rally held in Columbus Circle, and the League fell apart soon thereafter. It was assumed at the time that Colombo was shot by a henchman of his long-time mob rival Joey Gallo. The Gallo Brothers crew was at war with the heads of the family ever since the early 1960s. Many naturally assumed Colombo's shooting was another skirmish in the war. Gallo himself was shot to death less than a year later in 1972 at a Little Italy restaurant. However, the police and FBI never officially concluded that Gallo was behind Colombo's shooting. It was often speculated that other more powerful mob bosses were involved, as they strongly objected to all the media hype Colombo was creating with the League. The last thing the mob wants is to attract attention to itself, and Colombo was doing just that in a big way. Simply put, the mob wanted Colombo to shut the hell up. His shooting, of course, would guarantee it. Colombo was severely wounded but did not die immediately. He lingered in a coma for 7 years until finally succumbing in 1978.
